CHEF MAYRA'S VEGAN HALLOWEEN
Chef Mayra aka Dr Flavor 702 372 4709 www.mychefmayra.com

A Healthy Halloween? Really?
Sugar-free alternatives to trick-or-treating & Vegan Halloween tips. Isn't there always one house in the neighborhood that hands out raisins or sunflower seeds on Halloween, much to the chagrin of all of the kids? If you don’t want your kids overdosing on sugar and don’t feel right about handing out sticky gobs of pure corn syrup to everyone else’s kids, then read on for some “tricks” to finding “treats” that won’t contribute to the yacht fund of your local dentist! Plus, find out which Halloween candies are vegan. Here are my vegan Halloween ideas for a sugar-free or healthy Halloween the whole family can enjoy.

Create a new tradition.
Perhaps even more important that what you do to celebrate Halloween with your family is that you do something. Establishing your own vegan-friendly Halloween traditions can be a fun and special alternative to a week’s worth of sugar highs and lows.

Trick-or-Treating Alternatives
If you don’t want your own kids trick-or-treating, here are a few alternatives:
•    Rent scary movies or dress up in your fabulous costumes and go out to the movies!
•    Get together with other vegan or health-concerned families and throw your own vegan Halloween party, complete with pumpkin carving, a costume contest, pin-the-bone-on-the-skeleton, and, of course, bobbing for apples!
•    Many churches, community centers and even shopping malls have Halloween festivals that provide a safe alternative to trick-or-treating. There is likely to be some candy at these events, but much less than with trick-or-treating. Check your local paper for announcements of these events.
•    Spend the evening baking some spooky Halloween treats together.
•    If you’ve got some artistic energy and live in a safe neighborhood, turn your home into a haunted house and invite trick-or-treaters in for a tour!

Hand out vegan candy
If you do want to hand out candy, there are lots of vegan candies available. A word of caution, however, vegan Halloween candies can be just as full of sugar and high-fructose corn syrup as those containing animal products. Or, shop at your local health food store to find some sugar-free or healthier Halloween candies. Be sure to stop by the bulk section as well, as there is usually some vegan candy in the bulk bins. Here's an idea: hand out vegan chocolates that promote the preservation of endangered species. Who could feel guilty about that http://www.store.foodfightgrocery.com/
Don't give in!

Of course you could always be “that house” that hands out raisins and nuts or dried fruits. Sure all the neighborhood kids will snicker, but the parents will love you, and you'll know that you did what you thought was best.

Whatever you do, have a safe, happy and healthy vegan Halloween or sugar-free Halloween!

The more compassion; the better you feel,
So why not eat vegan at every meal?
Carib Chef Mayra
Happy Halloween!

IDLERS RETURN TO THE MAINLAND
Newfoundland reggae circus Idlers revisit Eastern Canadian venues in October!

Idlers are a 10-piece reggae/ska circus playing a high-energy blend of reggae styles and afro-beat peppered with a dash of their Newfoundland Celtic roots. Keeping true to the roots reggae of the 1970’s, their socially conscious lyrics speak of the human condition. Their music has been described as “full-tilt energy” (Brent Hagerman, Exclaim!) and Idlers were voted Best Live Band of 2008 by readers of The Scope.

Their debut album, Corner, was released in December 2007, and was recently nominated for four MusicNL awards, to be awarded in November. It is available in select stores in Canada, and online through iTunes and CD Baby www.cdbaby.com

REGGAE ON THE RITZ
Dancehall and Roots Reggae legend Buju Banton will be joining Dancehall's latest luminary Mavado at the renowned Ritz Theatre in Elizabeth, New Jersey on Sunday, October 26th. This unprecedented event, now dubbed Reggae at the Ritz, will be the first time that the swanky 'uptown' Ritz was hit with Jamaica's 'downtown' Dancehall vibe.

Presented by Race Entertainment, Streetz96 and Road Block Radio, Reggae at the Ritz will be the theatre's debut Reggae event, with headlining performances from Buju Banton, who in 1992 broke Bob Marley's record for most #1 hit singles from a Reggae artist in a single year, and Mavado---the man Rolling Stone Magazine classed as the 'best Reggae artist since Bob Marley.'

With his signature gruff voice and sharp-edged lyrical delivery, Jamaican music icon Buju Banton, also known as 'Gargamel,' hits the Ritz with a nearly 20 year catalogue of some of Dancehall and Roots Reggae's biggest anthems including "Bogle," "Browning," "Walk Like a Champion," "Wanna Be Loved," "Untold Stories," "Driver A," and "Too Bad." Banton has released seven albums including Dancehall classics Voice of Jamaica (1993), and 2007's Too Bad, and his signature album 1995's Roots/Dancehall masterpiece 'Til Shilo.

Mavado, whose "Gangsta fi Life" persona and haunting sing-jay vocal style has made him the most infamously famous of Dancehall's latest generation of deejays, brings the 'gully' side of Dancehall culture to glitzy Ritz. Earning international attention with bitingly gritty tunes like "Weh Dem A Do," "Last Night," and "Gully Side," Mavado's debut album Gangsta For Life: The Symphony of David Brooks spent 48 weeks on the Billboard's Top Reggae Albums chart. His latest hit singles "So Special" and the "On the Rock" remix with Hip Hop mogul Jay Z, are currently in heavy rotation on mainstream stations around the globe.

Reggae at the Ritz will be held at the Ritz Theatre (1148 East Jersey Street) in Elizabeth, NJ. Advance Tickets are $39, $59, $79, and $99. For ticket information, go to www.ticketmaster.com.

Screwdriver : : Jah Send Him Come
DATE OF RELEASE: September 4, 2004
Distributed by All Access Entertainment,
Kingston JA. Ph. 876 908 4949
Email: info@allaccessent.com

This song "Jah Send Him Come"  was written  by Dalton Lindo a/k/a Screwdriver for Luciano in response to a request from Luciano's manager, Sean Folkes. When it was delivered to them as a demo, the Coco Tea "Barack Obama" song was released and Luciano said since there was already a tribute song release for OBAMA he would not be bothered to record it.

It was then that producer Danny Breakenridge from Upstairs Music suggested to Screwdriver that he is a fitting candidate to record the tribute and that it should be done in an acoustic/folks style. Screwdriver welcome the suggestion and they recorded it at Tropic Isle studio in Fort Lauderdale Florida.  Working with the acoustic guitar of Eugene Grey, congo drums by Endel-I, funde drum by Lucas Becerra Surdo, percussions- Eugene Grey, Harmony by Hassana, mixed by Hugh  'Cuban' Palmer and edited by Shauna. The result is a soulful musical expression that recognizes and acknowledges the dynamic leadership of Barack Obama which offers optimism of historical proportion.

DUB COLOSSUS : : IN A TOWN CALLED ADDIS
Dub Colossus is Dubulah aka Nick Page (composer, guitarist, bass player and programmer), whose latest project is the album ‘A Town Called Addis’, which reflects his love of Ethiopian singing and musicianship.
‘A Town Called Addis’ was inspired by meeting, writing and working with singers and musicians when Nick was in Addis Ababa in August 2006, and the album is a collaboration between those artists and Dub Colossus. Covering Azmari and traditional styles as well as the popular singing styles of the 60s and 70s, it seeks to combine the golden years of ethiopique beats and ethiojazz with the dub reggae styles of early 70s groups like the Abyssinians, Mighty Diamonds and so on. Nick Page started his music career with Michael Riley (Steel Pulse), and went on to form Trans-Global Underground with Tim Whelan and Hamid Man Tu in 1990, producing, writing and playing on their first 6 albums. In 1998 Nick started Temple of Sound with Neil Sparkes.Nick has also produced/written for Natacha Atlas, Los de Abajo, and Rizwan Muazzam Qawwali and done remixes for Enzo Avitabile, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Cheb i Sabbah and Chebba Zahounia , Bollywood Brass Band and Jah Wobble.
