REGGAE FOR DARFUR
|
The Pilot House (St. Louis, MO U.S.) was dressed up in red, green, and gold last Saturday night in honor of "Reggae for Darfur," a benefit concert hosted by the University of Missouri-St. Louis' chapter of Amnesty International.
Students from Alpha Phi Omega, the Catholic Newman Center, and Amnesty International volunteered at the event by selling t-shirts reading "Reggae for Darfur."
They also collected $5 donations for the St. Louis Save Darfur Coalition, and passed out information on the genocide.
All of this was done against the backdrop of the event's two reggae bands/DJs, "Massive Hi Fi" and "Dubtronix."
"Classic reggae so often has a socially consciousness undercurrent, not all of it, but so much of it does," Professor Michael Kuelker, of St. Charles Community College, said. "That's why I chose the DJs and bands here tonight." Kuelker is a co-host of "Positive Vibrations," a reggae radio show on radio station KDHX.
According to a BBC News report distributed at Reggae for Darfur, 250,000 people have already died in the region. An additional two million have fled their homes since 2003. Another handout claims over 400,000 have perished, and 2.5 million have been displaced.
Whatever the figure, in July 2004 the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, and the Bush Administration declared the conflict a genocide.
The country of Sudan has been plagued with civil wars for decades, but the conflict in Darfur began when the Sudanese government-financed militia (known as "Janjaweed") began to destroy the civilian base in Darfur where two rebel movements in the region had developed.
Kuelker said he hoped that the attendants of Reggae for Darfur would not only have a great time, but would learn about the conflict. Also, he said he hoped that students take their new knowledge beyond the show and put pressure on their political leaders to do something about the genocide.
"That's the really the core goal of 'Reggae for Darfur," he said.
Hopefully the audience members enjoyed themselves and maybe even learned something about human rights in the process. Learn More at: http://www.amnesty.org

A MAORI GIFT OF THANK YOU TO BOB MARLEY
|
Gold-selling reggae artiste, Ruia, recently came to Jamaica to film a Bob Marley documentary for the Mäori of New Zealand.
It serves as the latest example of reggae's global reach beyond the major metropoles of New York, London and Tokyo. The documentary will air in New Zealand early next year in Ruia's native Mäori language.
The documentary's translated title is A Gift of Thank You to Bob Marley and should air early 2009. It centres on the role reggae played in reigniting pride in the Mäori people.
"Bob Marley's music came at a very important time and to tell you the truth Bob Marley woke me up, along with the messages of Marcus Garvey and Rastafari. There are similarities between our prophets and your culture. ..... And to tell you the truth, Rastafari Reggae Jamaica has influenced an initiation of a renaissance in our country....of our people are no longer lying down anymore, and being submissive. We now want to get up and challenge things," said Ruia earlier this month at Bookophila cafe in Kingston.
Mäori are the original inhabitants of the New Zealand, they came before the Europeans, but have been colonised by the Europeans. "Today we own about seven per cent of the land," said Ruia whilst being filmed by his documentary crew.
Some years ago Ruia's record label got the rights to translate 20 Marley songs into Mäori. He delivered a personal copy to the Bob Marley Museum.
"We got to meet Stephanie Marley and gifted over the CDs with a covenant between our people and the Marley nation and the Jamaican people, and we also a carved a treasure box that we gifted to her. She has allowed it to be displayed in the Marley Museum."
Ruia wants to broaden a cultural exchange of artists between both countries. "Part of the reason we come here to make connections with different artists. We were in Tuff Gong the other day, and we met about six artists and four or five producers. And we met two other producers. So we are looking at collaborations," he said.
Jamaica is a sort of Mecca for Reggae and culture, he said: "Kiwi people love Reggae and love Jamaica, because of Bob Marley, Toot and the Maytals, Burning Spear, the Abyssinians all of them down to Buju Banton. So many of our people see Jamaica as a holy place and dream of coming here."

THE LOVE OF JAH
I love you, O Jah, My love, My warmth, My solace, My fulfilment All that I am, all that I do Finds meaning and purpose in you. Fill me with the full force of your love and its passionate splendour, So that I might hold and heal all those who are crying out for love.
