CHEF MAYRA'S BEAN SALSA!
|
Make the beans, make the salsa, MIX TOGETHER! Add some cheese if you like. VEGANS use your NON Cheese mix.
Cooked the beans as usual (soak them overnight, cook them with plenty of water, an onion, a 3 cloves of garlic, some chili power to taste and some cracked pepper; cook for about an hour or so) Then I drain the beans reserving about 1-½ cups of the cooking liquid. Sautee (2 tablespoon) use olive oil or coconut oil) 1 diced purple small onion , (1) small dice tomatoes and minced garlic in oil until soft, add about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon cumin and fry for a minute or so add the drained beans, salt and pepper to taste and about 3/4 cup of the reserved cooking liquid. Bring to a boil and start mashing the beans (you can make them as mushy as you want or leave some unmushed). It might seem like there is too much liquid but let it boil for a few minutes and it will thicken up. If it gets too thick just add more liquid.
The Salsa, **Chef Mayra is giving you different versions. 6 chilie de arbol 1 teaspoon organic olive oil 1 very large or 2 medium tomatoes (3/4 lb.) 1/4 cup onion, peeled and quartered 2 tablespoons tomato juice or V8 3 cloves garlic, peeled 1 cup of chopped cilantro 4 limes 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste 2 Avocados for the top of the readymade salsa bean
Heat olive oil in a skillet; roast the chilies (be sure there is good ventilation in the house!) in hot oil until brown. Peel, mince and crush garlic. Add to skillet when the chilies begin to turn color; do not allow garlic to brown. Add quartered onions, cooking only until slightly translucent (this takes the "bite" off).
Put all ingredients into a food processor, blender or Vitamix machine and process briefly (only a few seconds) until a chunky puree is obtained.
**Two Pepper Salsa: Green or red bell peppers, quartered and seeded, may be added when all ingredients are transferred to food processor, if desired.
**Roast Garlic Chile Salsa: To make a roast garlic version, dip an entire head of unpeeled garlic in olive oil and wrap it in aluminum foil. Roast in oven for 40 minutes at 350F. Alternatively, peel about 20 cloves of garlic, then sauté them in 1/4" olive oil in a heavy bottom pan, turning them over as they take on a toasted color; crush them flat when they are tender and sauté a minute more before transferring to blender with other ingredients.

SCOTLAND ARTIST WITH RASTA HEART
|
Illustrations by English-born artist, Jerry 'Jeremiyah' Neville. Source: Jamaica Gleaner Michael Robinson, Gleaner Writer
FOR SOMEONE who has never been to Jamaica, Jerry Neville has clearly developed a unique connection with the island through art and music. Also known as 'Jeremiyah', the artist began his formal training in art in the 1970s, somewhere around the same time that he was first introduced to the reggae stylings of Ken Boothe and Jimmy Cliff. The 1973 release of the Wailers first album, Catch A Fire, ignited what was to become a lifelong passion for Jeremiyah. He found the rhythms infectious and the strong themes of social justice and spirituality resonated with him.
Since the golden era of rockers, Neville has been involved with the promotion of reggae music in Scotland. He produced many posters for Ital Club, Scotland's first Jamaican-style sound system. His art was featured on numerous album covers and in Black Echoes magazine.
Jeremiyah's style is strong on graphic, with clean, smooth lines and bold colours that echo the art of Rastafari and Jamaica's intuitive artists that had its heyday in the 1970s. At first glance, his renditions appear simple. Upon closer inspection, however, his diligence and discipline become apparent in the repetition of line and stippling techniques that are the hallmark of his pieces. He also works in black and white, as seen in his pointillist portrait of Marcus Garvey and a recreation of a famous Bob Marley photo. Neville's work is visually compelling and the content is inspiring and thought-provoking. 'The Lion Sleeps' is a portrait Marley, one of Neville's strongest influences, done as a take on 'The Sleeping Gypsy', a painting by French post-impressionist Henri Rousseau.
While he hopes to one day visit the home of the music that is his muse, Jeremiyah continues to express his passion as a way of giving back. "I hope," he says, "that my drawings can reflect just a little of the joy and inspiration that this great music has sustained me with over the years."

WALKER T CREATES MUSIC LABEL
|
Reggae artist Walker.T has joined the ranks of many reggae leaders by creating and launching his very own music label. The Walkerton Music Group Inc. was created for the independent music entities. Walkerton Music Group Inc. Consist of: SUPA RECORDS: Fort Lauderdale Florida. TEMPO PRODUCTIONS: San Diego California. J.P. PRODUCTIONS: Hollywood California. CRENSHAW ENTERTAINMENT: Hollywood California/Aggtown Texas. STAR INTERNATIONAL SOUND INC: Brooklyn New York.
Walker.T and his affiliates have all been in the reggae music fraternity for many years and have each contributed their fair share of hard work by either producing, promoting or being an artist themselves. The launch of the music group was to generate enough resources necessary to be able to produce records, spread the message of reggae music and also as a means of evading the vastly growing but somewhat currupted atmoshpere of doing business without any strong representation or rights, or license for the music.

NOBLE SOCIETY : : Take Charge
For Immediate Release: Contact: Diego Campo (917) 370-27490 noblesociety@gmail.com
Crowned kings of urban reggae NOBLE SOCIETY, bring their mash-up of ‘hip-hop meets dancehall’ with the release of a new album, Take Charge.
Comprised of musicians who have worked with a “who’s who” of music (Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Branford Marsalis, John Kale, Luciano), Noble Society was born out of a desire to blend the sounds of dancehall with hip hop and world music – call it urban reggae. Taking note from the grime scene currently brewing in London, the Noble Society sound is “worldwide energy,” says founder, and guitar virtuoso, Diego “Fuego” Campo.
Creating a sound that is both world and urban, with a vibrant live show to match, Noble members Fuego, Delie and Jahdan make music that is conscious and beat-driven. With the release of their second full-length album, Take Charge, Noble is one of the most promising Brooklyn bands on the scene. Their sweet melodies and solid beats take listeners on a journey to a place where great music and greater understanding take charge.
The ethereal “Mama So Divine,” composed after a trip to Africa by frontman Jahdan, infuses an acoustic sound in the vain of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song.” Taking elements from his time spent with musicians from Mali, “Mama So Divine” is also influenced by sounds of the kora. Jahdan sings,
“Africa, awo. Africa...Her beauty it shall never fade away. I hope and pray to see her blessed face...”

SASHAMON FROM HAWAII ON WEST COAST TOUR
Sashamon (sa-sha’-mon) - Maybe because he grew up on Molokai, Sashamon’s music brings a unique peaceful vibe to the island music scene. The public first heard Sashamon’s blend of Reggae and Hawaiian music on a homemade demo, which spread worldwide with the support of top Kauai professional surfers. The popular underground CD 'One Day Maybe' found its way to KWHI 92.7 Hawaiian Rhythms on the Big Island of Hawaii.
With no press kit or label support, “Japanese Squeeze” amazingly became the station’s most requested song and stayed on top for two months. “Japanese Squeeze” was replaced by another Sashamon song “Necta” (Butterfly) and it’s popularity caused Big Island’s KAPA 100.3 and KWXX 94.7 to give airplay as well. Soon “Necta” hit the top of the charts and most requested at Oahu stations including KCCN FM 100, KINE 105.1, KDNN 98.5, as well as the top stations on Maui and Kauai where it continues in heavy rotation to this day! Visit Hawaii and you will surely hear Sashamon on the radio!
And like the love for Hawaii that is everywhere in the world so too is Sashamon’s music, which is now getting airplay in Brazil, Japan, London, Germany, France, Tahiti, Israel & more..
Sashamon’s music has been featured on television as well, including the FUEL network’s Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and 808, and Hawaiian shows such as Hot Hawaiian Nights and Overdrive Live/OC 16 where “Necta” was the #1 most requested video.
The music is in countless surf/extreme sports movies including: Jaime O's ‘Freak Show’ and ‘Freak Show 2,’ legendary film maker Jack McCoy’s ‘Iorana’ about the Tahitian culture (which was featured on Air Tahiti Nui in-flight and Australian TV), Rachelle Ballard’s Sacre Bleu, Volcom’s hilarious ‘Eastside Theory,’ Canadian surf film ‘Shrink,’ Budiasa (Japan) and the snow boarding movie ‘Perspective.’
Sasha was also commissioned to do a song for the ‘Everybody Loves Bob’ compilation tribute to Bob Marley, and "Necta" is featured on Resin Music's ‘Surf Roots 2’ compilation CD benefit for the USA Surf Team and the Surf Roots DVD.
Watch for the new Sashamon album due out Summer 2009.

PRAYER BY MAYA ANGELOU
Father, Mother, God,
Thank you for your presence
during the hard and mean days.
For then we have you to lean upon.
Thank you for your presence
during the bright and sunny days,
for then we can share that which we have
with those who have less.
And thank you for your presence
during the Holy Days, for then we are able
to celebrate you and our families
and our friends.
For those who have no voice,
we ask you to speak.
For those who feel unworthy,
we ask you to pour your love out
in waterfalls of tenderness.
For those who live in pain,
we ask you to bathe them
in the river of your healing.
For those who are lonely, we ask
you to keep them company.
For those who are depressed,
we ask you to shower upon them
the light of hope.
Dear Creator, You, the borderless
sea of substance, we ask you to give to all the
world that which we need most—Peace.
