Jesse Flower-Ambroch

Jesse Flower-Ambroch is a sound mixer/designer working out of New York City. One of his latest pieces was production sound for the filming of the US Olympic sprint kayak team during training at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA.

"I did production sound for this amazing piece, which was shot at the olympic training center in Chula Vista, CA. For the on-the-water shots, I chose to wire Carrie Johnson with a
Lectrosonics MM400B; a water resistant transmitter designed to withstand a bit (well... in this case a lot) of splashing. The lav provided unparalleled sound during her high-octane workouts and the ability to capture conversations with other teammates while we shot from distance."

"The
Lectro MM400C water-resistant transmitter was an incredible tool for this shoot. The MM400C performed beautifully, with the awesome range and fidelity I've come to expect from Lectrosonics products and the piece of mind that my transmitter could withstand a bit of a splashing. Being able to hear conversations between teammates and how much Carrie was exerting herself during practice gave amazing intimacy to the footage."

Sanken, Zaxcom Team Up For Lavalier Mic

Sanken has announced the COS-11D, the latest version in the COS-11 lavalier series. The new design incorporates design advances that deal with digital and digital/analog hybrid wireless transmission.

President Glenn Sanders remarked, "Zaxcom is excited to recommend the Sanken COS-11D for use with our TRX series of wireless digital recording transmitters. The COS-11D, with its immunity to RF interference, provides the audio quality that sound mixers have come to expect, while Zaxcom's digital wireless technology ensures transmission quality that is equivalent to that of a hard-wired connection. Together these products will provide an integrated system that blends reliability with superior performance and quality."

In today's wireless transmission systems the microphone must remain unaffected by the new forms of transmitter signals. While the benefits of these new systems are obvious, they present new challenges in the area of emission protection. Sanken Microphones has designed the COS-11D specifically to reduce the instances where interference is an issue.

Jim Pace, president of Sanken distributor plus24, added, "Sanken Microphones is excited to announce this breakthrough product. Working with the latest in wireless technologies, Sanken and Zaxcom have partnered to provide another unique solution for our users."

The new COS-11D version will be introduced this month in limited quantities. The unit will be available in the PT (pig tail) version with standard sensitivity, and the Red Mark model with reduced sensitivity.

Sound Devices 788T 8-Track Digital Audio Recorder With Time Code Sound Devices 788T Recorder

The 788T is a powerful eight input, eight-track digital audio recorder designed for production sound. Building on the success of the proven 7-Series architecture, the 788T offers greatly expanded input and output connectivity while continuing the 7-Series heritage of extensive control in a compact package. Its eight full-featured inputs ensure superb audio quality. They accept either microphone or line-level signals, provide 48 V phantom power for condenser microphones, offer peak limiters for microphone inputs, and fully adjustable high-pass filters. Extensive routing flexibility allows each input to be routed to mixed tracks or to isolated tracks. The 788T has three options for recording media, internal 160 GB SATA hard drive, CompactFlash media with UDMA support, or an external FireWire hard drive or DVD-RAM (with bus powering). Any or all of these can be used simultaneously. Additionally, when connected to Mac OS, or Windows computers with high-speed USB or FireWire 400/800, the 788T functions as a high-speed mass storage device. To simplify interconnection with mixers and cameras with AES3 connectivity, the 788T has eight channels of balanced AES3 digital input and six channels of balanced AES3 output. The 788T can be clocked from external word clock or from video sync. The 788T has a high-accuracy time code reader/generator on board. It includes auto-record features to chase external rec-run video sources. To simplify metadata entry the 788T directly accepts USB keyboards. Keyboard shortcuts can be programmed to control menu items and machine transport. The extensive power of the 788T simplifies any production sound setup.

Sound Devices CL-8 Controller for the 788T Digital Recorder
Sound Devices CL8
The CL-8 is a mixing control surface companion to the company’s new 788T recorder which provides additional capabilities to the 788T without a significant increase in weight, making it adaptable to a variety of field productions. The CL-8 features eight large, rotary faders to control the eight inputs of the 788T. It offers command over numerous input settings, including high-pass filter, limiter, polarity, and mute. When used with the CL-8, the original 788T input controls function as input trims, and the CL-8 controls offer fader control. To ensure accurate and clear marking of tracks, the CL-8 is able to manage the 788T’s built-in slate mic. For rapid setups in the field, the CL-8 allows users to quickly assign inputs to the main left and right record tracks. With a push of the input knob, users also have the ability to solo an input in headphones so they can concentrate on a specific track within their recording. With the CL-8 users now have access to two additional recording tracks (Aux 1 and Aux 2) through the CL-8’s associated firmware, for total of 10 record tracks. These new tracks can be used to provide auxiliary sends for more comprehensive setups. Inputs can be assigned to Aux tracks pre- or post-fader. LED’s indicate when signals are present. The CL-8 can be connected to a keyboard through the controller’s USB keyboard pass-through port. "The CL-8 adds powerful mixer functionality to the 788T," says Matt Anderson, Director of Engineering for Sound Devices. "With its small addition of weight and size, the CL-8 turns a 788T into a very flexible eight-channel recording and mixing environment for both portable 'bag' systems as well as cart-based productions."

The PMD661 is compatible with SDHC cards (currently up to 32GB capacity), offering up to five-plus hours of recording time from four AA alkaline or NiMH batteries (not included). The USB 2 port supports simple drag-and-drop file transfers, and the included Mark Editor software allows marker points on the recorded file to be adjusted post-recording, creating a new file so that basic editing can be carried out on a PC or Mac if desired.

Sennheiser Rebates

Sennheiser Offers Unique 700 MHZ Wireless Mic Rebate

Sennheiser Electronic Corporation has introduced a rebate program in preparation for the imminent ruling by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) that will restrict the use of wireless mics operating in the so-called 700 MHz band. To receive a rebate, users must purchase new Sennheiser systems and components in an alternate range and trade-in an equal number of old wireless systems or components, including non-Sennheiser brands, that currently operate in frequencies between 698 - 806 MHz. The twelve-month program includes tiered rebates of up to $1,400 or a simple flat rebate.

The tiered rebate program, unique to Sennheiser, is the most equitable rebate program available today and takes into consideration, not only the product series but also, when the old system was purchased. This applies to evolution wireless G2 products purchased in 2006 and 2007. End-users who purchased as recently as December 2007 qualify for the maximum rebate.

Sennheiser is also offering a simple flat rebate for all systems and components that don't qualify for the tiered program. For example, a flat rebate applies to the trade-in of other manufacturers' systems, Sennheiser freePORT or older evolution wireless systems.

For Sennheiser 3000 and 5000 series RF systems, which have the most flexible RF architecture available, Sennheiser continues to offer its cost-effective frequency re-tuning services. Users should call (860) 434-9190 for re-tuning service details. Sennheiser is also offering rebates of $500.00 per channel ($1,000 for dual channel systems) for upgrades to the latest 3000 and 5000 series components.

The rebate form and program details can be downloaded from Sennheiser USA's website. Rebate claims must be postmarked no later than December 15, 2009, and received by December 31, 2009 at SEC's headquarters in Old Lyme, Connecticut.
