BOB MARLEY'S MENTOR, 'TATA', PASSES AWAY
|
Two years after the passing of Bob Marley's chief mentor, Mortimo Planno, another sage, who influenced the growth and development of reggae's most famous icon, 'Tata', died suddenly early Sunday morning.
The latest of a distinguished list of personalities associated with the music in one way or another from - performer to producers - who made their transition this year, 'Tata', whose real name is Vincent Ford was more than a mentor. He was given the writer's credit by Bob Marley, for his most re-recorded songs, No Woman Nuh Cry, which has a universal anthem for oppressed women.
And according to a well-informed source, Bob Marley, in a 1975 radio interview, stated that he had written No Woman Nuh Cry one afternoon at Tata's place.
In the booklet from Bunny Wailer's box set Musically Speak, the Untold Story of the Wailers, a picture of Tata seated in front of his Trench Town home is captioned, "Tata's ranch (Casba) where the Wailers rehearsed."

MR. VEGAS ROCKS KENYA
|
For the second time in his vibrant career, Mr. Vegas embarked on a journey to "The Motherland" of Africa to headline the mega-concert "Generation Jipange" in Nairobi, Kenya. There, the popular singjay delivered his hits to nearly 70,000 people. According to officials, this was the largest event of its kind to take place in Kenya.
When Mr. Vegas graced the stage, he was moved by the massive audience. Backed by Thugz band, Mr. Vegas proceeded to deliver a set of his hits to fans -- jumpstarted by strong performances of "Hot It Up" and "Hot Gal Today." Mr. Vegas followed his chart-toppers with a medley of Reggae favorites, which invigorated the youth. He was later joined on stage by over-the-top dancer Boricia. The crowd went wild as Boricia displayed the latest dancehall moves in the most eccentric fashion. Clearly, the Kenyan youth embraced the "dance" in dancehall music. By the immense turn out, it was clear to see Mr. Vegas' reach and the universal power of Reggae music.
"Generation Jipange" refers to a new youth movement in Kenya centered on empowering youth to stay healthy, pursue education/employment and be positive. The free, day-long concert, which took place at Nairobi's Uhuru Gardens, was filled to capacity as early as 8:00 AM. The event was televised by Kenyan networks. In addition to Mr. Vegas, the concert had at least 14 other acts on the bill -- including popular Kenyan artist Jua Cali.
"This was such a great experience.........and it was great to return home," says Mr. Vegas. "I was truly honored to be part of an event to motivate Kenyan youth."
It's been a year of worldwide magnitude for Mr. Vegas, as he has been blessed with opportunities to entertain thousands of people across the globe. Aside from the record-breaking crowd in Kenya, the dancehall favorite has thoroughly captivated colossal crowds in Japan (40,000 people) and Guyana (28,000).

PETER LLOYD TO RELEASE SOPHOMORE ALBUM
|
Multi-talented actor/singer/songwriter, Peter Lloyd, following a series of great performances over the festive season, is now preparing the ground work for the release of his second single entitled "Perfect Body". The track produced by Lloyd with mixing and other creative credits going to Collin 'Bulby' York, rhythm twins Sly & Robbie and Guitsie, is the follow-up to his recent number one hit "Oh My Darling" which is now enjoying favourable airplay.
Peter Lloyd, not much of a socialite, recently returned from his specially invited overseas assignment alongside agency-mate Sean Kingston, and shares the work ethic of a bee as he's consistently in the studio working to attain that next big hit while simultaneously fine tuning his craft.
When asked about plans for the coming year the Lloyd explained that there are several major projects on the roster including completing additional tracks for his upcoming sophomore album still untitled, alongside shooting the new season of the local hit mini series 'Royal Palm Estate'. However the crooner was very tight-lipped about a possible deal in the works for a major television undertaking. "I will let you know when the deal has been finalised" - He added.
In retrospect, Peter Lloyd has had a splendid year, from critically acclaimed performances for capacity audiences at Christopher's Jazz Club (Quad), Jazz In the Garden (Pegasus Hotel), Ewarton Jerk Festival (Ewarton) to a plethora of overseas shows and undoubtedly a consistent headliner on the North Coast where he's a favourite amongst the tourist community.
With 2008 coming to a closure, his hard work and perseverance came to an apex with the signing of a major international booking deal to INTOUCH Booking that sees him upgrading to the major league alongside industry heavyweights like Sean Kingston and R&B sensation Robin Thicke.
Locally, Lesley Hayles of Bass Line Entertainment Services is responsible for all his affairs.

Fredlocks' first full-length album, Wisdom, received three nominations at the Canadian Reggae Music Awards in 2001. An instrumental, "Dub Life", and the compilation album "Ultra Flex Volume One" followed in 2004 and 2006.
Toronto producer Jesse King, a.k.a. Dubmatix, tapped Fredlocks Asher in 2004 to contribute lyrics and vocals to his Champion Sound Clash album. This rich mix of dub and electronic reggae went to #3 on the national World Music charts and saw re-release in European and Japanese editions. One song in particular, "Journey to the Center of the Dub," sent Fredlocks Asher's voice soaring to the top of radio playlists including #1 Top 40 on CIUT Toronto. A new Dubmatix album, Atomic Subsonic, was released in 2006.

HYLTON "THE WHISTLER" BROWN : : Joyful Reggae
Hylton"The Whistler"Brown is a man of countless talents. He can talk, address the word powerful to the audience. Sing in a golden tone of voice, make words reach.Dance or shuffle with mighty speedy energy. Then again improvisate, change style from singing to DJ to bongo drumming. Lick straight into my heart. But, and this is a but - the highpoints of his performance ever when he touches the whistling. Clean, crystalclear flying spirit. Yes.
“Joyful Reggae” by Hylton The Whistler Brown is, well, just that - a collection of joyful, inspirational reggae tunes. “Positive dub” stands out, delivering the pleasant sounds of the steel pan, native drums, and a lovely brass section. What’s more, Hylton demonstrates why ‘the whistler’ is part of his name by adding a lead whistling melody to several songs. “Get Up” is another memorable tune, because of its interesting rhythm section and use of creative percussion sounds. Moreover, Hylton proves to be lyrically uplifting, delivering motivation in the areas of love, work, and spirituality.” RadioIndy.com “Inspirational reggae…coming back from the real roots.” Musiker Magazin Germany
His musical road began in the early 1980ies in Jamaica, where we won several awards at the prestigeous Jamaican Pop & Variety Festival, first as singer, later he introduced the whistling to this big audience. And the beauty and perfection of his whistling performance was considered so uncomparable that the jury created this year a new award, just for him: "novelty act-whistling".
