NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE OF ROUGH AUNTIES BY KIM LONGINOTTO AT SUNDANCE

Women Make Movies is thrilled to announce that our recent acquisition, ROUGH AUNTIES, by internationally acclaimed director Kim Longinotto, will have its North American premiere, screening in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at Sundance. Joining Longinotto will be two of the film's subjects, Mildred Ngcobo and Thuli Sibiya, who will be traveling from South Africa to attend. Fearless, feisty and resolute, the "Rough Aunties" are a group of women unwavering in their stand to protect and care for the abused, neglected and forgotten children of Durban. Already generating buzz, this film is an intimate portrait of change from post-apartheid South Africa, a nation being transformed with hope and energy into a new democracy. ROUGH AUNTIES was recently acquired for broadcast by HBO Documentary Films, and was produced by Rise Films, the team behind the award-winning WE ARE TOGETHER.

PRODUCTION ASSISTANCE AND OTHER WMM FILMMAKERS AT SUNDANCE

As in previous years, several films associated with WMM and the WMM Production Assistance (PA) program will be at Sundance. WMM would like to extend our congratulations.

* EL GENERAL, by WMM filmmaker Natalia Almada (AL OTRO LADO), was produced through the WMM PA program and is competing in the U.S. Documentary Competition at Sundance. This look at Mexico's history paints a portrait of Almada's great-grandfather Plutarco Elias Calles, known alternately as "The Father of Modern Mexico," and as a brutal dictator. WMM is the distributor of Almada's early short, ALL WATER HAS A PERFECT MEMORY, and has been working with the award winning filmmaker in the PA program since then.

* WILLIAM KUNSTLER: DISTURBING THE UNIVERSE by Sarah and Emily Kunstler, about their father the controversial civil rights and anti-war attorney, received support from the PA program, and will be competing in the U.S. Documentary Competition.

* NO IMPACT MAN by Laura Gabbert and Justin Schein, chronicles the Beavan family as they attempt to live an environmentally zero-impact lifestyle in NYC. The film is also associated with the PA program, and will show in Spectrum.

* Elswhere in World Cinema Documentary Competition, WMM filmmaker Nahid Persson Sarvestani (FOUR WIVES - ONE MAN) will be screening THE QUEEN AND I, about the Iranian filmmaker's year and a half with the exiled Iranian, Queen Farrah.

* And WMM filmmaker Kimi Takesue (SUMMER OF THE SERPENT) will be showing her short film SUSPENDED.

Congratulations and good luck to all our filmmakers!
