ARUSI PERSIAN WEDDING EMBARKS ON 45 COMMUNITY SCREENINGS - IMPORTANT ARTeEAST DATE CHANGE

The 30-year anniversary of the Iranian Revolution in February is a perfect time to reflect on the complex U.S.-Iranian history explored in ARUSI Persian Wedding, a film by Iranian-American filmmaker Marjan Tehrani, produced through the WMM PA Program and distributed by WMM. ARUSI embarks on a 45-city tour as part of ITVS's Community Cinema Screenings this month, followed by a special ArteEast and WMM NYC screening on Wednesday, March 4*. Following the ArteEast screening will be a discussion with director Marjan Tehrani, moderated by WMM Executive Director Debra Zimmerman. This screening is free and open to the public. MY DAUGHTER THE TERRORIST NY PREMIERE AT MOMA'S 2009 DOCUMENTARY FORTNIGHT SERIES

Filmmaker Beate Arnestad will be on hand Sunday, Feb 15 for her New York premiere of MY DAUGHTER THE TERRORIST, taking part in MoMA's upcoming showcase of nonfiction film and video, Documentary Fortnight (Feb 11-25). The film traces the lives of two female soldiers in the elite Black Tigers suicide cadre of the Tamil Tigers, a secessionist group in Sri Lanka and will show alongside THE SOLDIER'S TALE, by Penny Allen. Both directors will be on hand for a post-show Q&A.

NEW YORK PREMIERE OF SHOOTING WOMEN AT FUSION FILM FESTIVAL

WMM is proud to co-sponsor the 6th Annual Fusion Film Festival (Feb 26-28), a vibrant student-run festival encouraging, promoting, and inspiring women filmmakers. This year at Fusion, WMM's new acquisition by Alexis Krasilovsky, SHOOTING WOMEN, will make its New York premiere as part of "Women Behind the Camera" day, followed by a panel discussion with award-winning cinematographers Nancy Schreiber (THE CELLULOID CLOSET), Valentina Caniglia (POMEGRANATES AND MYRR), and Sandi Sissel (SALAAM BOMBAY). Also part of the day's events will be a discussion with Maryse Albert (THE WRESTLER), workshops led by Judith Helfland, and a screening of the Sundance film SUNSHINE CLEANING.

GIRLS LIKE US BY WAGNER & FELICIANTONIO AT IFC'S STRANGER THAN FICTION SERIES

A fluid hand-held camera follows an ethnically diverse group of four working class teenage girls who strut, flirt and testify in GIRLS LIKE US, an hour long documentary exploring female teenage sexuality. Filmed in South Philadelphia over a period of four years (ages 14-18), GIRLS LIKE US brings into sharp relief many of the conflicts of growing up female and reveals the impact of class, sexism and violence on the dreams and expectations of teenage girls. This award-winning film from acclaimed directors Jane C. Wagner and Tina DiFeliciantonio plays March 3 at the IFC Film Center.

SPANISH WOMEN BEHIND THE CAMERA SERIES

Former WMM staffer Marta Sanchez is the curator behind this year's Spanish Women Behind the Camera Series (Feb 3-March 3). Five new features and shorts honor the achievements of Spanish women working today in the areas of film directing, screenwriting, editing and other behind-the-camera forms of artistic expressions. This series allows viewers to explore the diverse themes women are confronted with today, upending traditional notions of women's issues. Highlights include recently Goya awarded SHE LIES and nominated THE CLASSROOM. Most of the films are NY premieres.

Women Make Movies is inviting women directors who live or have residency in New York State, to apply through WMM for New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) funds, annually awarded in grants of up to $25,000. You DO NOT need to be a filmmaker or member of WMM. Simply email WMM your project information no later than February 25 (extended from Feb 20) and WMM will register your project for "intent to apply." More info here.
APPLY FOR FISCAL SPONSORSHIP THROUGH THE WMM PA PROGRAM! The next deadline for applications to the WMM FS Program is fast approaching. Since 1986, WMM has been helping emerging and established filmmakers at all stages of production get their visions to the screen.
