MIAMI, FL CARIBBEAN FESTIVAL FEB 28TH!
|
|
The 16th Annual Caribbean Festival will be held Sat., Feb. 28, 2009, in Bicentennial Park, downtown Miami, Florida.
The daylong celebration of music, arts, and crafts honors the life and
philosophy of legendary reggae star, Bob Marley. This year it also
honors the memory of Cedella Marley Booker, the mother of Bob Marley
who passed away in 2008. It was her spirit and energy that lived in
the festival, and it will continue to be felt in those whose lives she
touched. The festival will continue to spread the Marley family message—to help those who are less fortunate.
Marley
brothers Stephen, Damian, Ky-Mani, and Julian in performance will be
Buju Banton, Capleton, Sizzla, Collie Buddz, Tessanne, Jahfe P Jam,
Finley Quaye, and more. Hosts will be Princess and Lance O. As
always, this promises to be South Florida’s finest reggae and
Caribbean music showcase.
The Caribbean Festival has always carried a humanitarian message within its musical one. From the very beginning, a donation of canned goods to feed those in need has
been an integral part of every festival. To date, the Bob Marley
Movement of Jah People has collected more than two million cans of food
for distribution to the less fortunate. This year, the non-profit
group Farm Share will collect the cans from the festival and distribute
them to those in need.
The Caribbean Festival is one of the
most successful and longest running music festivals in all of South
Florida. People every year mark their calendars and travel from around
the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean to attend the event. The
festival reaches across all aspects of the community who come together
in peace and harmony. Check Out: http://www.bobmarleymovement.com/

SOUL REBEL: AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF BOB MARLEY
|
|
OVER 200 NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN IMAGES OF BOB MARLEY TAKEN BY ACCLAIMED PHOTOJOURNALIST, DAVID BURNETT PUBLISHED IN: SOUL REBEL: AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF BOB MARLEY
"Burnett captures the haunting Misty Mornings of the Isle of Springs, and the private Jamming and cloudy studio wizardry of its musical magicians. We see intimate portraits of Burning Spear; the Bush Doctor, Peter Tosh; the irrepressible producers Jack Ruby and Lee 'Scratch' Perry; and most impressively, the Prophet Bob Marley, deep in thought and serious as a heart attack, in the process of creating and sharing his immortal Redemption Songs." —Roger Steffens, Chairman, Reggae Grammy Committee; founder, The Beat magazine; author of Reggae Scrapbook
For any reggae lover, music history buff, or Bob Marley admirer, Soul Rebel presents a unique view into Marley’s life just a few years before his death from cancer in 1981. Burnett, who has gained behind-the-scenes access to Presidents and celebrities throughout the world, remembers Bob Marley’s warmth and generosity. “I was a stranger covering him for an international news publication. Marley was especially hospitable and very forthcoming. We sat for a couple of hours speaking about everything from politics, to music, and the whole scene in Jamaica, and why it would give birth to a movement like reggae. His suspicion of politicians kind of mirrored by own, though his view was colored by the hard times he'd known growing up in Trenchtown. In a way, that is the beauty of his music, that from such harsh beginnings came such spiritual understanding and musical poetry.”
To celebrate the genius of Bob Marley on what would have been his 64th birthday, beginning February 6, 2009, and continuing through March 28, 2009, Govinda Gallery in Washington DC will present an exhibit of Burnett’s Marley images curated by Soul Rebel editor Chris Murray. Original limited edition prints of David Burnett’s photographs are available to collectors through the gallery.

REGGAE AFFECTS THE WORLD
|
|
source:sflcn.com Jamaican musicologist Dermott Hussey says that a
study of the global penetration of Jamaica's Reggae music into
communities which have adopted it, could reveal that its
internationalization was the country's finest hour.
Addressing a Reggae Symposium and Art Exhibition at the Embassy of
Jamaica in Washington DC on Monday (February 23), Mr. Hussey noted that
Reggae enjoys international fame, like blues, funk, rock and jazz.
He said that advertisers were creating reggae jingles to promote a
variety of products while, increasingly, film soundtracks feature the
music, and Jamaican innovations, such as "dub" and "versions", have
been copied globally and expanded.
The music and persona of Bob Marley were key elements of Brand Jamaica,
which continues to have a powerful resonance and persuasive affect on
the world's music landscape, he said.Tracing the history of Jamaican music, Mr. Hussey said Jamaica gave the
world a new rhythm with melodic bass lines closest to a heartbeat.
Turning to Marley's contribution, he noted that 28 years after his
passing, his persona, his music, and message were as alive, globally,
as when he lived. He also paid tribute to the pioneers of Reggae. He told the standing
room only audience that the concept of celebrating Reggae Month was
laudable and one, which should be embraced internationally.

PUTUMAYO PRESENTS: AFRICAN REGGAE
|
|
African Reggae is, in part, an homage to Bob Marley’s powerful impact on African music. This collection features selections by outstanding African musicians who have built upon Jamaica’s “golden age of reggae” in the 1960s and 1970s by weaving together traditional and modern sounds into a vibrant musical fabric.
When reggae evolved from ska after Jamaica’s independence in 1963, it quickly dropped its seeds in Africa, the true land of its origin. Pioneering Jamaican artists Desmond Dekker and Jimmy Cliff were African favorites in the 1960s, followed in the next decade by Bob Marley, whose songs of African unity and liberation and concerts in Africa inspired all of the artists on this CD.
There is an uninterrupted connection between the cultures of Africa and Jamaica as African instruments, rhythms and chants were brought to the Americas and the Caribbean by slaves, eventually becoming blues, rhythm and blues, funk, jazz gospel and reggae. Nigerian reggae artist Majek Fashek has said, “If I was born in Jamaica, I’d still be an African. I do not play Jamaican reggae. Reggae is African.”
African Reggae vividly illustrates how African artists have kept the spirit of roots reggae alive from Cape Town to Cape Verde. This collection includes tracks ranging from the hit “Magno Mako” by Ivoirian Ismael Isaac to the melting pot brew of Burkina Faso’s Bingui Jaa Jammy and from the Rastafarian-influenced sounds of Ghana’s Kwame Bediako to the mystical kora-laced incantations of Guinea Bissau’s Nino Galissa.
Echoes of reggae masters from Jamaica abound as one can detect the influences of Jamaican keyboard legend Augustus Pablo, Peter Tosh and many others. African Reggae demonstrates the powerful influences of reggae on the continent of Africa and how African musicians have added their own unique flavors to create an exciting, fresh musical brew. Messenjah Selah : : Breaking Babylon Curse
|
|
Messenjah Selah (b. Everton Clarke) is a fresh voice in the conscious reggae scene, although he has been singing professionally for ten years. His music is smart and powerful, breaking down general reggae themes like love, consciousness, and justice, and personalizing them to his own style. His main message is to, “Know yourself and by knowing yourself, you will know the Creator.”
Selah attributes his global perspective to his upbringing of growing up in Jamaica, moving to the Virgin Island at age 15, and relocating to Atlanta, Georgia after high school. His sophomore CD is his best one yet, entitled “Breaking Babylon Curse” on the Zion High/Lustre Kings label.
Important gems on the CD include “African Bless,” “Focus,” and “You Deserve.” The East Bay Express writes, “Light on the well-worn spiritual and social imagery of Rasta culture, [Selah] prefers to pair smart, serious commentary about contemporary issues with pure positive vibrations especially throughout his sophomore album's superior second half.”

Far from the concrete council blocks of South London, their new inspiration is the airy Stony Hill district above Kingston and a compact studio they've established close to home...For their whole lives home has either been Jamaica or London, moving between the two either literally or musically. Sons of veteran Jamaican singer/songwriter Jack Radics, the brothers are very much a product of their musical background, ranging from the melodic reggae of their father to their roots in London's hip hop scene - which itself has close ties to the Rock.
It wasn't always music - after all, not everyone follows directly after their father - with Matthew trying to make a career in acting, getting as far as appearing on BBC television while Jordan excelled at basketball, representing England at under-16 level.
However in their teens that music soon took over. Jordan quickly became a precocious young MC and an integral member of hip hop groups Lotek HiFi (then signed to the groundbreaking Big Dada label) and respected live act Focused Few. Just as his MC'ing talents belied his age, the then teenage Jordan quickly took to instruments and beat-making.
It was during this stage he developed an interest to play instruments and soon was making beats and contemplating studio equipment. Matthew had been back in Jamaica working with their father, Jack, but with his brother breaking into the London scene and his father now signed to EMI in Germany, he decided to head back forming a new group, SK, with fellow MC Metropolis in 2003.
Scraping and saving the brothers had by 2005 bought enough equipment to build their own studio and were working with other artistes, establishing a strong underground following via local pirate radio. That said, they decided once again, and why not, to pack up everything and relocate to Jamaica in 2006.
From their new base they've worked with a range of artists from the Governo Sombra organisation in Portugal to platinum selling singer Gentleman and behind the scenes at different levels of production, stage shows and even music videos with Ras Tingle and TD Films. But right know it's the SK, SoundKillaz and their new album 'JA Rydaz', which listening you'll find a reflection of their background, hip hop tracks with a Jamaican accent... the first of several planned releases planned on their own label SK Productions
