REGGAE SUPERSTORE IN D.C. MIXES BUSINESS AND FAMILY
source: districtchronicles.com
Classic reggae fills the air as sidewalk traffic grooves to the tunes on Georgia Avenue. As customers step through the door of Reggae Unplugged Superstore, they pass turntables that are setup by the window, while visions of men and women are seen gyrating on the muted 37-inch flat-screen T.V. displayed on the wall. An array of the latest fashions and autographed posters adorn either side of the store.

Behind the counter sits Marvin Tackie, wearing waist-length dread locks that he has been growing about as long as he has been in the music industry. For over 13 years, Tackie has played reggae music at local D.C. clubs and lounges. He has successfully created his own sound in the genre called Knotty Dread. Influenced by the classic Bob Marley album, "Natty Dread," Tackie changed the spelling to signify strength, firmness and being "unbreakable."

Tackie, who is also known as DJ Jah Marvin, has experienced a lot of success as a DJ. He was awarded Best Reggae mix tape from the Southern Entertainment Awards in 2007. After launching http://www.reggaeunpluggedtv.com, Tackie opened up Reggae Unplugged Superstore located at 5804 Georgia Avenue, NW.

"I didn't have enough money to get the store," said Tackie. The store was previously owned by the Target Squad, to whom he sold his mix tapes. Through a lot of motivation, Tackie worked out a deal with the Target Squad and opened up shop on April 1, 2008.

Reggae Unplugged Superstore serves as an outlet store for his mix tapes and other various items from reggae DVDs and CDs, African and Caribbean flags and trinkets, magazines, and designer clothes from Blac Label to Cooyah, an upscale Caribbean clothing line.

"In this area, reggae music is not really that big," said Tackie's wife Aretha, also known as Jah Dawtah. "[People] listen to more hip hop and rap." The Tackies use their service to broaden the reggae industry in the DC area.

The road was not always this easy for Tackie. Having to deal with "the law" when he was younger taught him that selling drugs and going to jail was not the lifestyle he wanted to live. "I started realizing that to have someone to take even one day of your life and you just sit in jail is nonsense," said Tackie.

The Tackies both agree that their family keeps them motivated and is a major benefit of entrepreneurship. "I can't work for anybody," said Tackie. "I've got four kids to feed and they have to eat." Aretha added that having a business of your own that you can pass along to your kids is also an advantage.

So what do the Tackies have to say to aspiring entrepreneurs? "Just do it," they said. "It might be hard or to start off may be a lot, but you won't know what you can do unless you just do it, advises Aretha. Tackie ensured that anything that is desired is achievable, but persistence is a must.

CHEF MAYRA'S - MEAT SUBSTITUTES
This is a three-part series because it is my favorite subject.

"You don't eat meat? What do you do for protein?!"

If you are a vegetarian like me, then I am sure you’ve had baffled meat eaters repeatedly asking this question. Why this seems to be the number one concern they have for us veggies is beyond me. And why our society is under the impression that only animal products have protein probably has something to do with the popularity of those meat-based Atkins-type diets. But don’t you worry, plant proteins contain the same 23 amino acids as animal proteins.

Deficiency in protein is quite uncommon in the U.S. The best source of protein you can possibly get is through spirulina, ocean algae. Consuming just 2 tablespoons (20 g) of this supplement will give you a whopping 13 grams of protein.

A diet without meat or meat by products...
There are a variety of foods that can be introduced into the diet that can act as meat alternatives, including tofu, soy and vegetable protein. Here are some recommendations of foods to add into a vegan diet that will help to replace some of the protein:

MEAT SUBSTITUTES

TOFU – Known in China as "meat without bones," tofu is a delicate, mild white cheese made from soy milk instead of cows’ milk.  There are two basic types of tofu: regular and silken.  Regular tofu is grainier and firmer than silken tofu and adds texture and chewiness to recipes.   Silken tofu is creamy and custard-like.  Both kinds may come in a range of firmnesses from soft to firm to extra firm.  Both are available in reduced fat versions.  It is also commercially available already baked and flavored.  Tofu can take on many different flavors and can be used to make anything from lasagna to cheesecake.

TEXTURED VEGETABLE OR SOY PROTEIN – textured vegetable or soy protein is a food product made from defatted soy flour, cooked under pressure and extruded into flakes, granules or chunks.  Dry textured protein must be rehydrated and cooked.  Flakes and granules provide a texture similar to ground beef and are good meat replacements in recipes such as chili, tacos, sloppy Joes and spaghetti sauce.  Chunks can be used to replace meat strips in stews or stir-fries.  They are also available flavored to taste like ham, beef or chicken.

TEMPEH – protein-rich food made from split and hulled cooked soybeans and grains that are combined with a mold culture and incubated for eighteen to twenty-four hours.  The result is a "cake" of beans which is covered with an edible white mold. It has a distinctive taste similar to mushrooms. Tempeh has a chewy texture that makes it a good substitute for meat in dishes like tacos and stew. When it is grated, it can easily replace ground meat in recipes like chili. It can also be marinated and grilled like a burger.

SEITAN – (pronounced say-Tan), is also known as wheat meat.  It is made from cooked gluten, one of the concentrated proteins in wheat or spelt.  Its origin dates back thousands of years to China where it was originally developed as a meat substitute by Buddhist monks.  To make seitan, dough is made by mixing together wheat flour and water.  The dough is kneaded to develop the gluten.   Then it is rinsed under running water until all the starch and bran are washed off.   A faster method calls for the use of instant gluten flour which is derived from pure wheat gluten.  No rinsing and very little kneading is needed to make gluten from this product.  Raw gluten can be simmered in a seasoned soy sauce broth which gives a "beefy" taste."  After it has been cooked, the gluten is called seitan.

Seitan can be used to replace meat chunks and slices in recipes such as stew, stroganoff or chili. It is available packed in its seasoning broth, fresh, frozen or in jars

See you back here next week for more ideas on meat substitutes and a good recipe!

U2 TO RELEASE A REGGAE/DUB ALBUM
source:jamaicagleaner.com
IRISH SUPERGROUP U2 have reportedly recorded a reggae/dub album that is scheduled to be released in early 2010. The band recorded songs for the set while working on their latest album, No Line On The Horizon.

Britain's News Of The World newspaper reported that U2's chief songwriters (vocalist Bono and guitarist The Edge) came up with the concept and began recording the reggae songs last year.

"It's just like how Bono and The Edge released the experimental Zooropa album soon after Achtung Baby," read the News story.

U2 are one of pop music's greatest bands. The quartet have been making hit records since the early 1980s, when they released powerful songs like New Year's Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday, which dealt with unrest in their country.

The band broke big with Island Records, the record company that launched Bob Marley internationally during the 1970s. Bono inducted Marley into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Ce'Cile TO TOUR WITH PETER FOX, MARCH 9-15, 2009, AUSTRIA AND GERMANY
The Bad Gyal has kept tongues wagging since first breaking into the Dancehall scene with the self produced, shockingly refreshing and thought provoking smash Changez. Now with her new album Waiting in-toe, Ce'Cile heads off to Germany this March for a series of shows with German Reggae Superstar Peter Fox.

Since her début in the late nineties Ce'Cile has been a regular staple in the international dancehall and reggae market. Her sultry singing, along with finely honed dee-jaying skills have made her one of the most sought after dancehall/reggae singers now on the scene.

Peter Fox is currently number one on the German Charts. After being on the album charts for four and a half months, Fox won three Echo Awards (aka the German Grammies) in the categories of: Best Hip-Hop/Urban Album, Critics Award and Producer of the Year.

Fox is the former lead singer Germany's most successful Reggae Band Seeed , but has eclipsed the success he had with Seeed by selling over 1 million units and counting of his debut solo album named Stadtaffe (City Ape) which was released on September 8, 2008. He has also topped the million hits mark on youtube on multiple occasions.

The Bad Gyal will open for Peter Fox on 6 shows including one at the biggest indoor concert venue in Germany; the Lanxess Arena in Cologne which holds 16,000 people. The tour will see Ce'Cile performing to crowds of between 9 and 16,000 and news from Germany are that most tickets are already sold.

Ce'Cile is no stranger to Germany as her release Hot Like We has been a famous club and mainstream radio hit in Germany for over three years, although it was never officially released there until last summer. The artiste is also highly rated on the urban scene and this is a grand
opportunity for her and Jamaican music in general to reach a wider audience.

With this tour Ce'Cile will get the chance to satisfy her waiting German
fans and also show the German mainstream pop audience why the German Reggae crowd has already fallen in love with her style and music. The artiste will also make stops in Hamburg, France and Austria. throughout the tour.

March 10 Germany, Munich  Zenith

GRAMPS MORGAN : : TWO SIDES OF MY HEART
A burgeoning solo artist, Gramps Morgan is on a mission to reinvent himself. In a time when reggae music is in a state of dejection and dancehall lyrics are redundant with nothing but a cache of clichés, slangs and slogans, GRAMPS Morgan feels it is the right time to go solo.

Currently in studios completing his double CD, Gramps’ first single, WASH THE TEARS, debuted at #8 on Italy’s Top 20 Singles Chart. “I want to heal people through music” at the same time, “I just want to give people new music and let people know that everything is going to be alright. I want to reason with my fans and get personal with them ‘cause everyone has problems. My music is about healing, heart to heart." says Gramps.

The single was composed, written, and produced by Gramps on his Dada Son Entertainment label, a subsidiary of the Morgan family's Gedion Music Group. Likewise, the album will be released on Dada Son and the two discs are intended to reveal Gramps as a multi-dimensional person and artiste. “I’m working with people that have touched my life in music.”

Dedicated to conscious Roots Reggae and Lovers Rock, fans can look forward to solid combinations with the Gargamel, Buju Banton and 4-time Grammy award winner, Ziggy Marley.

Meanwhile, the double disc also introduces Gramps in Adult Contemporary whereby he exhibits his diversity, offering fans a multitude of new sounds including collaborations with “soul bird” and multi-Grammy award winner, India Arie; country music star Kenny Rogers; and R&B singer, Musiq Soulchild.

With ‘Two Sides of My Heart’, the highly anticipated solo-debut slated for release in the summer of 2009, Gramps Morgan is ready to fulfill his father’s prophecy and promises to bring a fresh sound. For more log onto www.myspace.com/grampsmusic
