SOUL REBEL: AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF BOB MARLEY
|
|
OVER 200 NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN IMAGES OF BOB MARLEY TAKEN BY ACCLAIMED PHOTOJOURNALIST, DAVID BURNETT PUBLISHED IN: SOUL REBEL: AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF BOB MARLEY
"Burnett
captures the haunting Misty Mornings of the Isle of Springs, and the
private Jamming and cloudy studio wizardry of its musical magicians. We
see intimate portraits of Burning Spear; the Bush Doctor, Peter Tosh;
the irrepressible producers Jack Ruby and Lee 'Scratch' Perry; and most impressively, the Prophet Bob Marley, deep in thought and serious as a heart attack, in the process of creating and sharing his immortal Redemption Songs." —Roger Steffens, Chairman, Reggae Grammy Committee; founder, The Beat magazine; author of Reggae Scrapbook
For any reggae lover, music history buff, or Bob Marley admirer, Soul
Rebel presents a unique view into Marley’s life just a few years before
his death from cancer in 1981. Burnett, who has gained
behind-the-scenes access to Presidents and celebrities throughout the
world, remembers Bob Marley’s warmth and generosity. “I was a stranger
covering him for an international news publication. Marley was especially hospitable and very forthcoming. We sat for a couple of hours speaking about everything
from politics, to music, and the whole scene in Jamaica, and why it
would give birth to a movement like reggae. His suspicion of
politicians kind of mirrored by own, though his view was colored by the
hard times he'd known growing up in Trenchtown. In a way, that is the beauty of his music, that from such harsh beginnings came such spiritual understanding and musical poetry.”
To celebrate the genius of Bob Marley on what would have been his 64th birthday, beginning February 6, 2009, and continuing through March 28, 2009, Govinda Gallery in Washington DC will present an exhibit of Burnett’s Marley images
curated by Soul Rebel editor Chris Murray. Original limited edition
prints of David Burnett’s photographs are available to collectors
through the gallery.

Clive Chin will be selecting vinyl hits from Randy's studio with an accompanying Power Point multi-media demonstration designed as sonic and visual outline of his experiences in Jamaican music, TEACH THE YOUTH recreates the essence of this seminal reggae era.
The first event takes place April 1, 2009 in Los Angeles at the Dub Club inside the Echoplex, sharing the bill are Tristan Palma and Michael Palmer. TOUR ALERT-SO CAL TEST RUN OF ALL ORIGINAL SHOWCASE!
|
|
Artists Winstrong, Roberto Gell, Dub Station and I-Trinity offer up a dynamite package rocking Southern California for the FIRST TIME.
It's 100% original Roots & Culture with some conscious dancehall, alternative, and hip hop woven through it. Click on the link below to hear some KRucial Reggae from these artists.
SAT 3/28 DAY SHOW at the Airliner in Los Angeles (2419 N. Broadway), (5:30-7pm set, club opens at 2pm w/3 openers including Rakia 7 Libra Project (18+)
SAT 3/28 afterparty at the Kaos Networks in Leimert Park (4343 Leimert Blvd), showtime 11p-1a (21+)
SUN 3/29 at the Blue Cafe in Long Beach (210 N. Promenade), with special guest openers Jah Beloved & Libra Project (21+), show starts early, from 9pm
MON 3/30 at the Marathon in Little Ethiopia (1043 S. Fairfax Ave), showtime 10pm (21+) TUES 3/31 at the Sandbar in Santa Barbara (514 State St.), showtime 10pm (21+)
If you haven't gotten your copy of Winstrong's "Eye of the Storm" CD, let us know. It's sold out, but we'll burn you a version with the very best tunes.
We're looking to re-press the album with a new cover, to showcase how
Winstrong's tunes are all on the level of his hit: "Boom Boom Blah
Blah" (Sounds of the Gun).
Strictly cultural, but fiercely modern, Winstrong's style is roots-oriented, but subtly blending dancehall and R&B flavorings. He's been featured on Compilations with Capleton, Sizzla, Snoop Dogg, and Wu Tang Clan. Don Carlos called him "the best kept secret in Reggae music,"
when he invited Winstrong onstage at Earthdance. Winstrong's also
toured with the likes of Mutabaruka, Perfect, and Warrior King.
Starting to create a serious buzz in NorCal, Winstrong's making his premier appearance in Southern California with this tour.
On New Years Eve, he was featured on a show with Kymani Marley, he made
his debut on the East Coast in January. Popular demand has him
returning in May. Outreach is under way for Hawaii and Europe.
Co-Headliner Roberto Gell
Dominican-American Roberto Gell is a melting pot of US & Caribbean influences.
He got his start in Hip Hop (and still works with the Libra Project),
so his music has some different feels to it. Singing mostly in English,
Gell sings in Spanish too. He's got a soft spot for SoCal on account of
the large Latin population, some of whom are really enjoying Reggae
(big up Quinto Sol). Last year, Roberto & I-Trinity toured Canada,
highlighted by the Montreal International Reggae Fest (where they
played with Midnite), and a jaunt into the US with the Jammin Fest.
Right
now, Roberto's promoting his "Midnight Ravers" EP, to be released as a
full-length CD this fall. It's got a wide swath of his style, with some
punchy messages, expletives deleted, and some serious meditations.
Backing
Winstrong AND Roberto Gell will be a combination band of up to 14
pieces, drawn from Dub Station (of the East Coast) and I-Trinity (of
the West Coast).
Dub Station has done a bunch of compilation work with different artists (on stage and in the studio),
as well as spotlight albums with these acts: Shaka Black, Tom O'Brien,
and Sonbeam. Abijah is also a primary featured artists, you can check
Abijah on iTunes.

HELP PROVIDE CLEAN DRINKING WATER TO CHILDREN ALL OVER THE WORLD
|
|
http://www.tapprojectradio.org
This week JOSEPH ISRAEL joins other big names in celebration of World Water Day (G. Love, Elijah Wood, John Taylor from Duran Duran, Verdine from Earth, Wind & Fire, Richard Greico, They Might Be Giants, and many, many more) to raise money for Tap Project Radio!
Check out the schedule at http://www.tapprojectradio.org/#schedule to tune into Joseph Israel and more!
Tap Project Radio was created to help UNICEF save the millions of children around the world who do not have access to safe, clean drinking water. Their mission is to raise $10,000 – enough money to provide 10,000 kids with clean water for 40 days.
In 2007, the Tap Project was born in New York City based on a simple concept: restaurants would ask their patrons to donate $1 or more for the tap water they usually enjoy for free, and all funds raised would support UNICEF’s efforts to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world.
Growing from just 300 New York City restaurants in 2007 to over 2,300 across the country in 2008, the Tap Project has quickly grown into a national movement. Restaurants, corporations, volunteers, advertising agencies, community groups, local governments and everyday diners participated to save millions of children’s lives.
During World Water Week, March 22-28, 2009, the Tap Project will once again raise vital donations and awareness for UNICEF’s water and sanitation programs. For every dollar raised, a child will have clean drinking water for 40 days. All funds raised support UNICEF’s efforts to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world
In 1992 the United Nations General Assembly declared March 22nd of each year as World Water Day. Countries are invited to devote the day to the conservation and development of water resources. As a result, conferences, round tables, seminars and exhibitions are held worldwide to promote public awareness of this global issue.
In 2009, the UN World Water Day theme is "Shared Water–Shared Opportunities." Special focus will be placed on transboundary waters. This year on World Water Day, we call attention to the waters that cross borders and link us together. Whether we live upstream or downstream, we are all in the same boat.
UNICEF has saved more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization, and UNICEF is committed to doing whatever it takes to achieve the goal of reaching zero preventable deaths. Currently, UNICEF provides access to safe water and sanitation facilities while promoting safe hygiene practices in more than 90 countries. By 2015, UNICEF's goal is to reduce the number of people without safe water and basic sanitation by 50 percent.

DADDY ROOTS : : Happiness Is In Your Heart
|
|
A dreadlocked Rasta of a different kind, Roots is often mistaken to be from Angola(Africa)instead of Anguilla(British West Indies). Perhaps this is due to the fact Rasta theology cites repatriation to Mother Africa as a must, or maybe it's the way Roots pays the utmost in respect and honor for his culture through his music. He explains,
Reggae music is the vehicle to convey my message of love to all of I-(hu)manity. My style of Reggae is a combination of old school, modern and a whole lot of other things-such as instrumentation from different cultures. My influence comes from a Higher being, something greater than I. I do Jah works by writing, recording and performing my music."
Often compared to Bob Marley for his songwriting and one drop style, Daddy Roots sings with conviction and strength that is reminiscent of the late and great Jamaican legend. Roots elaborates, "Bob Marley's song 'War' was great enlightenment as I walked through life. I first listened to reggae when I was four or five. It was played constantly in the neighborhood. I was born with Rasta in my heart. Rasta is my life and will always be. Rasta is the teacher, preacher and guidance when you have no guide." Just as Bob Marley and the Wailers did for us three decades ago with their timeless music, Daddy Roots hope to lead a new generation of consciousness with songs from his earlier albums like 'Walk Away From War'. He reflects, "'Walk Away from War' was born with the full sight of vision and was a meditation. It is pertinent to our times and should be taken more seriously. Peaceful confrontation will bring about results and not death, holocaust or revolution." His latest album "Happiness" features "Are You Willing" produced by Karl Pitterson of Steel Pulse fame. "Make Love Not War" is Daddy Roots' take on non-violence.
He professes, "I bring the message the love, respect and honor to I-manity. It is conveyed through my music whether on CD or performed live on stage. I would like those who experience Daddy Roots to view life in a different and more positive, loving and forgiving light."
The future looks bright for Daddy Roots as he embarked on his fourth North American tour this July in support of his latest album "Are you Willing". The road to success has not been an easy one as Roots points out, "I advise all singers and players of instruments to never give up the fight to be heard. Today may fail you, but there is always tomorrow. I was once told that everyman who has a voice could sing so let it be heard. It's just a matter of applying yourself. My music is about love, and being humble and upright and not letting others get you down."
Although it appears that Roots may sometimes only be preaching to those converted by the Marley legacy, he strives to break new ground and open some ears and hearts to his infectious music. He concludes, "People must listen to reggae because the music is there to free your mind mentally, physically and spiritually. Reggae is the music of this dispensation and whoever listens to it with an open mind will feel the vibes of Jah's divinity within the music." CHECK OUT: http://www.daddyroots88.com

BAIJIE : : That's Life
|
|
TruckBack Records recording artist, Baijie, born Dave St. Albourn Williams, combines a natural melodic tenor voice with shrewd deejaying skills. Baijie is conscious yet contemporary and his sound is modern yet deeply rooted in the past. “That’s Life”, the lead single on Baijie’s upcoming debut album, Equilibrium "That's Life” a TruckBack Records orginial, also signals a new direction for a studio known for its dancehall beats. Heavy bass bubbling underneath a bright melody, passionate percussion and TruckBack's tight production provide the artiste room to showcase his full vocal and artistic range. From cool and deadly singing to rough and ready deejaying, Baijie employs a variety of styles to interrogate why "The little the poor man got, him stealing it/ Empty plate a yard and me cyan put a meal in it".
“That’s Life” video is scheduled to shoot in Kingston Jamaica on March 21 under the direction of Ras Tingle and produced by Danielle Deslume for TDFilms.

IN THE NAME OF THE MOST HIGH
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want; He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Amen.
