JAMAICAN REGGAE CONSCIOUS ARTIST - MACKIE CONSCIOUS - INVITED TO PERFORM AT THE 5TH SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS - PORT OF SPAIN - TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO‏
It has just been announced that, The IV Peoples’ Summit has invited Jamaican conscious reggae performer Dennis McKay aka Mackie Conscious, to be a guest performer at this year‘s Fifth Summit of the Americas conference. This year’s event will be held for the first time in the Caribbean; the Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from April 17 - 19, 2009.

Mackie having achieved International recognition for his conscious works in the Reggae Entertainment field, is world renowned as One of Jamaica’s Premier, Reggae Conscious Artists. It is fitting that the invitation was extended to Mackie, as this years’ theme for The Fifth Summit of the Americas is: “Securing Our Citizens’ Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability”.

When asked, what is so special about this particular Artist? The response is always; That “by all appearances Mackie truly lives and sings about the real consciousness of life”. This consciousness is shown like a beacon of light through the social awareness and positive messages in his music. From conscious songs such as “The World is in Trouble” “Cell phone on the Hip” to “More Reality”, Mackie’s musical expressions seems to personify the person within. It is well noted as of late; there has been much negative press on Reggae Artist going’s on. In such light; Mackie considers it “an honour’ to be recognized for his positive lyrics and to be invited to such a prestigious event. It is more than noteworthy of what an honour it is, for Mackie Conscious to be invited to this Summit: The mere fact that – The president of the United States of America – President Obama will also be in attendance.

The official White House press states: President Barack Obama will go to the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago in “a spirit of equality,” looking to exchange ideas with the region’s leaders and hear what they have to say about a range of issues. Being a true Reggae Ambassador - Mackie Conscious will also visit media houses across Trinidad and Tobago to share his music and promote the message of true Peace, Love and Unity. The opportunity presented by the staging of the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago is being used by the social movements of the hemisphere opposed to neo-liberalism to meet and to address an agenda for the people of the hemisphere. This alternative forum, called the IV Peoples’ Summit is a drive for social justice, equity, peace and sustainable development. The V Peoples’ Summit of the Americas will bring together members of trade unions, non-governmental organisations, civil society, social movements, agricultural groups, students, human rights activist, cultural activist and a wide variety of other progressive networks and persons from the Caribbean, Latin America and North America. CHEF MAYRA’S HEARTY VEGAN CROCKPOT STEW
Serves: 8-10    Preparation time: 4-7 hours
    5 cups faux “chicken” broth
3 tablespoons brigs Amino acids  sauce
    1 teaspoon  organic Italian seasoning
    salt and pepper to taste
5 tablespoons vegan Worcestershire or TAMARI
3 heaping tablespoons of cornstarch whisked with a little water until not lumpy
1 8 oz can organic tomato sauce
1-2 cans organic  diced roma tomatoes with basil and garlic
    3 cloves of garlic, crushed
    1 1/2 cup chopped onion
    1/2 cup white mushrooms, diced
1 small sweet potato and 4 carrots, peeled and chopped
    2-3 zucchini, sliced
    2 cups of  cauliflower
    3/4 cup corn
    3/4 cup peas
    1/2 cup uncooked quinoa
    3/4 cup uncooked red lentils
    1 cup regular garbanzo beans
    1 cup green garbanzo beans

Directions:

The directions for this are pretty simple:  I just throw everything in (I refuse to pre-sauté anything or add ingredients at different times because that defeats the purpose of the Crockpot, to me), leave it for 6-8 hours on low, or 4 or so hours on high, come back et voila: dinner!

Chef Notes:
This stew is high protein and really yum.  You'll get a lot of meals out of this with minimal effort.
I like to garnish each bowl with a dollop of Tofutti before serving.
Sometimes I also like to add 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts and Fresh Spinach and Cilantro chopped to the stew before serving.
*If you want, you might sauté the onions, garlic, and mushrooms in a little light olive oil before tossing them in.  Personally I think they taste fine either way is a choice that you have.

'Til next week……. Stay Green, Lean And Sexy…With an “Animal Free” lifestyle

SOME CLOSURE FOR LUCKY DUBE'S FAMILY
Photos by Lee Abel
source:http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/01/world/africa/01safrica.html

The trial for the men who murdered Lucky Dube in a botched carjacking is over. Three men have been found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parol.

Evidence points to Lucky being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  These were common hoodlums who saw an opportunity to steal his car as he pulled into his brother’s driveway.  They ordered him out of the car but he tried to drive away.  One of the guys grabbed his hands , wrestling him for control of the car.  The other jumped in the backseat, next to his son, and shot him two times through the back.  The shooter figured that the victim was struggling because his was a Nigerian and there was a lot of money in the car.  The third man drove the get away car.  There was a fourth man but he turned State’s witness and got immunity. The criminals did not even know it was Lucky until they heard about it in the news.

Two of the murderers tried to escape on the way to court on the day the verdict was to be read, smashing a brick into a policeman’s face. They were caught and arrived back at court with their heads bandaged.

Mr. Dube left behind a wife and seven children. After the verdict was read, his wife was too emotional to talk with reporters, but his son Thokozani, who had witnessed the crime, said, "We can now have closure."

Love and Blessings to Lucky and His Family, May He Rest In Peace.

IN MORE LEGAL NEWS...

Reggae artiste Luciano (centre) and his lawyers Delano Franklyn (left) and Hugh Wilson discussed matters at a press conference held at the Hilton Kingston hotel in New Kingston. - Photo by Roxroy McLean

REGGAE SINGER Luciano denied any criminal ties to and expressed remorse for the shoot-out at his St Andrew home which ended with the death of a gunman and injury to three policemen.

It was the Grammy-nominated vocalist's first statement on the March 25 incident which resulted in him being charged with harbouring a fugitive. "I have never hired anyone to watch my back as has been reported," said Luciano, whose real name is Jepther McClymont.

"This is not only a figment of imagination of the perpetrators of this smear on my credibility, but is a total lie," Luciano said during a press
conference yesterday at the Hilton Kingston hotel, New Kingston.
"At no point in time did I know that anyone visiting my home/ studio had with him or her an illegal firearm or ammunition," he continued. "I have always had an open-door policy to people. Based on my recent experience, the danger of this open-door policy has not escaped my attention."

Andrew Senior, a man the police said was wanted for several murders, engaged a police squad in a firefight at Luciano's Westminster Crescent home on the morning of March 25. Senior was killed in the two-hour stand-off. Police spokesman Karl Angell said two of the injured policemen underwent surgery and are still in hospital, while the other was released.

On Monday, Luciano was charged and offered station bail of $60,000. He is scheduled to appear in court April 9 when it will be known if he will be allowed to travel for overseas shows.

Luciano was accompanied to the press conference by Delano Franklyn and Hugh Wilson. Several entertainment industry figures also attended. Originally from Manchester, Luciano is a leading figure in roots-reggae and is best known for the songs It's Me Again Jah and Lord Give Me Strength. His 2001 album, A New Day, was nominated for a Best Reggae Album Grammy.

GREGORY ISAACS: BRAND NEW ME
Released December 2008, this Gregory Isaacs album suggests some brilliant new reincarnation of the man they call the ‘Cool Ruler’. And any reggae fan who purchases this CD will not be disappointed as a new, more focused Gregory tackles a variety of issues such as heartbreak, betrayal, friendship, loneliness and the peculiar cruelties of Jamaica’s criminal justice system in a 17 track masterpiece.

Isaacs is at his vintage best as he croons Fools Fall in Love, arguably the CD’s best track, and he bleeds all over tracks like Send Me Back My Heart as he pines for the caress of a lover. Isaacs is all too intimate with the cruel nature of addiction and love is the greatest narcotic of them all. When Isaacs croons: “send me, send me back my heart, girl”, your heart almost breaks too in sympathy for his pain. Other standout tracks include ‘Over and Over Again’ and the uptempo ‘No Trust.’

Musicians who played on the album include Paul‘Wrong Move’ Crosdale, Kirk Bennett, Donald Danny Basey; Dennis, Carol Bowie McLaughlin, Winston Bopee’ Bowen and Danny Marshall. Horns were provided by Dean Fraser, Roland Nambo’ Robinson, Everald Wray, Everton Gayle and Barry Bailey. Tad Dawkins Jr. and Tadiem A. Dawkins are the executive producers of the album. The album also features two bonus tracks, Memories and Same Old Me, the latter of which is a direct contradiction to the Brand New Me premise that the album suggests. But it's all good, the more things change, the more they remain the same, but reggae fans wouldn't have it any other way. Gregory Isaacs material retains the same emotional resonance of his earlier work, he has aged wonderfully like fine wine. This album is a must-have for the collection of all reggae lovers.

Since the release of 'Brand New Me' Gregory has released 'Don't Distress', 'So Much Love', 'Live 1984', 'The Early Singles Collection', 'Slum In Dub', and 'Over The Years Vol. 1,2 &3'. All which can be found on I-Tunes!

LOOKOUT FOR JAMAICAN DANCEHALL ARTIST NATALIE STORM
Jamaican dancehall artist Natalie Storm has been hard at work delivering a variety of material which she'll be  taking to the road. Natalie started the year with two singles from the Ward 21 label “Talk Of The Town” with Tifa and “Dem Nuh Know” on the Mad Ting riddim which have been getting constant play in the dances and on radio. Not content to rest on the success of “Back It Up” she has released two more hot records which have been getting tremendous love on radio over the last few weeks.

Her first lover’s rock effort “I Bruise Easily” has won her new fans from across the globe as it touches the hearts and souls of lover’s everywhere.  “I never knew people would appreciate the song so much!” Natalie responded when asked about the reaction to the song.

“I hoped that they would love it as much as I did, but the airplay and positive feedback has surprised even me.”  A video is being prepared for “I Bruise Easily” which should hit local and overseas media outlets in the coming weeks. The song was produced by Prodigal Entertainment which is the management and production arm of the Swatch International sound system.

The other single currently being played all over radio is “Gwaan”. This smash was produced by Enur whose work also includes the multiplatinum selling international hit Calabria. Gwaan is featured with Calabria on Enur's new internationally released album Raggatronic. Gwaan is straight electro dancehall which tells a story of heartbreak and strength from a woman’s perspective. The track is a definite crossover hit which still has a strong local appeal.

Natalie is currently spending hours in studio putting the final touches on her first production effort. Her debut riddim called FireStorm is being readied for an early May release. It will feature some of the hottest new artists as well as a few of the biggest names in the business. Natalie stated that production has always been one of her interests and the Firestorm project is her way to showcase another area of her musical talents.

Natalie is currently on the RE TV school tour and gearing up for a several shows in the coming weeks. Check out her latest releases and concerts at myspace.com/nataliestorm

JOAN ANDREA HUTCHINSON : : Inna Mi Heart
The CD, like the book, provides its own light entertainment, but more importantly, serves as a vehicle for those who want to express themselves on issues of love, but just don’t know how. Hutchinson is quick to acknowledge that most people struggle with the articulation of emotional issues, and so the CD makes it easier for them as ‘they never have to see the person face to face.”

The 59 tracks cover a wide cross section of issues relating to love and as Hutchinson says…”there is a poem for every reason and every season.”  She said that  while the CD can be used in association with Valentine’s day, there are poems which speak to generalities in relationships … the sweet and the not so sweet.

If you are looking for a poem to tell someone that you like them but you are shy, if you want to celebrate your love, if you want to say it is over – Inna Mi heart has a poem for you.  If you need to comfort a friend who is grieving or hurting, and if you want to tell someone to get on with his or her life without you - there are poems which speak specifically to those issues.

Since  Joan Andrea Hutchinson published her book of Jamaican love poems ‘Inna Mi
The tracks on the CD are sweetened by music from Fab Five’s Sidney Thorpe.  According to Hutchinson, Sidney got it just right, and the music enhances the poems.

So while you splurge for valentines Day, remember that there is love after, and emotions, the good, bad and ugly still need to be communicated. The CD Inna Mi Heart… is the vehicle and will be available in stores this weekend

DUB LOUNGE INTERNATIONAL : : Dub Lounge One (Ancient Vessel)
Seattle's Dub Lounge International (DLI) is live dub reggae at its best. Ranging from original dancehall grooves to solid old-school standards, DLI offers up a blend of fair-trade organic roots and culture while staying true to the Jamaican sound. Their sultry three-part harmony and melodic soundscape infects listeners with contagious dub meditations.

Beginning as a recording project co-produced by drummer Dan Lloyd and bassist Norman Baker, the band expanded their dub onslaught by enlisting Jonathan Kimball on guitar, Darin Pearson on keys, and Naphtali Rashid on vocals, percussion, and harmonica. Several of the players formed the original Wet City Rockers and currently back reggae legend Winston Jarrett as the solid Foundation Rockers. DLI members have also played with reggae greats such as Prezident Brown, Wadi Gad, Lutan Fyah, and ADX, and have shared the stage with Midnite, Rankin' Skroo, Dezire, Clinton Fearon, the Itals, Fishbone, Buju Banton, Groundation, Yami Bolo, and Israel Vibration.

Simply titled Dub Lounge One, their new album is set for release in February and is the perfect soundtrack for any fine day. Winston Jarrett, Ezra Tosh, and Puddu Dawes are featured on the album. One listen to Dub Lounge One proves it is just the beginning of what promises to be a bright future for DLI.

the album can be purchased on iTunes and CDbaby.

Henry Turner, Jr. & Flavor : : "Bangin' Yo Head Up Against the Wall"
Reggae/funk artists Henry Turner, Jr. & Flavor's songs are not only unique, original and highly entertaining but socially relevant as well. This is especially true of Flavor's new single ³Bangin¹ Yo Head Up Against the Wall..

"When I wrote Bangin Yo Head Up Against the Wall I was watching the economic devastation of America and people doing what they have to do (legal or illegal) to survive the economic recession," Turner said. "Like (then) President-elect Obama, I feel it is time for change and time to speak directly to the people. This is my positive statement to the new America."

The song features Henry Turner, Jr. on lead vocals, guitar, bass, drums and
backup vocals, Ronnie Houston on drums and Kenny Dearing on backup vocals,
bass and percussion. Jack Kelly adds percussion and backup vocals along
with special guests Dusty Lightfoot Cashio and Jocita Williams.

With a stern warning to thieves, cons, backstabbers and all their ilk in this delightfully funky number, listeners are not only left tapping their feet but considering the truth of the lyrics as well. Thoughtful, introspective and delightful, "Bangin' Yo Head Up Against the Wall" is a song for our times.

IN THE NAME OF THE MOST HIGH
source:worldprayers.org

For the expanding grandeur of Creation,
worlds known and unknown,
galaxies beyond galaxies,
filling us with awe and challenging our imaginations:

We give thanks this day.

For this fragile planet earth,
its times and tides, its sunsets and seasons:

We give thanks this day.

For the joy of human life,
its wonders and surprises, its hopes and achievements:

We give thanks this day.

For our human community,
our common past and future hope,
our oneness transcending all separation,
our capacity to work for peace and justice in the midst of hostility and oppression:

We give thanks this day.

For high hopes and noble causes, for faith without fanaticism,
for understanding of views not shared:

We give thanks this day.

For all who have labored and suffered for a fairer world,
who have lived so that others might live in dignity and freedom:

We give thanks this day.

For human liberty and sacred rites;
for opportunities to change and grow, to affirm and choose:

We give thanks this day.

We pray that we may live not by our fears but by our hopes,
not by our words but by our deeds.
