KIM LONGINOTTO HONORED WITH 14-FILM MoMA RETROSPECTIVE, MAY 7-23 + MASTER CLASS: KIM LONGINOTTO & DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING MAY 9
One of the foremost documentary filmmakers working today, Kim Longinotto is renowned internationally for her perceptive and complex portraits and her sensitive and compassionate treatment of unusual topics. MoMA in collaboration with WMM presents fourteen documentary works tackling a range of fascinating subjects from Japanese women wrestlers to divorce in Iran. The exhibition opens with the New York premiere of ROUGH AUNTIES, winner of the Best Documentary, World Cinema at the Sundance Film Festival and scheduled for broadcast on HBO in 2010. Other highlights include the Peabody and Cannes Prix art et Essai Award-winning SISTERS IN LAW; The BAFTA Award-winning DIVORCE IRANIAN STYLE; and HOLD ME TIGHT, LET ME GO with its national broadcast premiere taking place on July 28, 2009 on PBS's Emmy-Award winning P.O.V. series.
MASTER CLASS & DIRECTOR TALKS Additional special events include four-consecutive nights of opening weekend screenings and talks with Kim Longinotto, plus a rare Master Class on documentary filmmaking. WMM SPRING FESTIVAL ROUND UP: TRIBECA, HOT DOCS, SAN FRANCISCO
 At Tribeca Film Festival, several filmmakers associated with WMM are taking part, including Nicole Opper and Rebecca Cammisa, who screened their WMM fiscally-sponsored projects OFF AND RUNNING and WHICH WAY HOME respectively, in the Discovery section of the festival. Also at Tribeca is WMM filmmaker Marjan Tehrani (ARUSI Persian Wedding), as producer to director Gabriel Noble's P-STAR RISING at the Tribeca Drive-In; and FS pass-through grantees Paola Mendoza and Gloria La Morte screening their much talked about ENTRE NOS. Finally WMM filmmakers Cathy Henkel's (MAN WHO STOLE MY MOTHER'S FACE), newest film BURNING SEASON, competed in World Documentary Features and Bette Gordon's newly-restored pioneering indie narrative about voyuerism, VARIETY, screened.
WMM filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin was recently featured in RealScreen for her Outstanding Achievement Award Retrospective at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival. Kim Longinotto's ROUGH AUNTIES will also make its Canadian premiere in the Special Presentation Program, while WMM fiscally-sponsored projects Rebecca Cammisa's WHICH WAY HOME and Camilla Calamandrei's THE TIGER NEXT DOOR will be showing in the World Showcase.
At the San Francisco International Film Festival WMM filmmaker Lourdes Portillo (SENORITA EXTRAVIADA) is being honored with a Golden Gate Persistance of Vision Award and will domestically premiere her latest, AL MáS ALLá. Also taking part is WMM filmmaker Marcia Jarmel (F-WORD) and her co-director Ken Schneider screening SPEAKING IN TONGUES, WMM filmmaker Allie Light (BLIND SPOT: MURDER BY WOMEN) and Irving Saraf with the already sold-out EMPRESS HOTEL; as well as FS filmmaker Anne Aghion, showing MY NEIGHBOR, MY KILLER, a film about rebuilding Rwanda after the genocide.
