Audio Mixer & Sound Supervisor - Whitney Ince
|
Whitney Ince
Whitney Ince is an Audio Mixer and Sound Supervisor based out of Savannah Ga and Miami, FL. He is currently working on Season 2 of “Ruby” for The Style Network as the Sound Supervisor. Some of his recent projects include The Food Networks “Dear Food Network” and “Real Vice Cops Uncut” on Spike TV.
“As a Reality TV Sound Mixer it is important to get it right the first time as you rarely get a second chance, I pride myself on getting it right the first time all the time. I do this by using the best gear for every situation.” Whitney uses the Zaxcom TRX 900 Stereo Wireless as his camera hop and describes it as “ an indispensable tool” for every Reality TV Sound Mixer. “ I won’t be able to do my job without the Zaxcom TRX 900 System it is a bullet proof robust system that allows me to concentrate on mixing and booming without having to worry about RF dropouts or range issues. I own three of these systems and have had them in every possible environment and never had a failure that is reliability.”
Whitney also stands by his Sound Devices mixers employing 302, 442 and Mix-pres on most of his projects, “ I love the flexibility that Sound Devices mixers provide me, I can quickly add more channels to any of my audio package without sacrificing sound quality and monitoring capabilities.” Two Sound Devices 302 mixers connected together is a powerful package providing the mixer with six channels of mixing capabilities and four outputs in a lightweight package with a lot of flexibility, which is always important on an unscripted project.
The key to being a successful Reality TV mixer is being prepared for everything and always be ready for the unexpected.

Shure Showcase at the Country Music Awards
The 44th Academy of Country Music Awards proved something of a Shure wireless showcase this year.
"From an audio and RF standpoint, Shure's UHF-R Series and the SM58 capsule continued to provide us with maximum stability and flexibility," production mixer J. Mark King said, commenting on the stage blueprint responsible for capturing the night's live performances.
For instance, the show opened with Brooks and Dunn, Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, and other A-list artists, all using UR/SM58 wireless to sing a medley of hits. Shure endorser Heidi Newfield and her UR/SM58 mic took the stage shortly thereafter, as did Toby Keith, who broke slightly with the night's established standards by singing into a UR/KSM9 wireless handheld mic. Falling back into the gravitational pull of the UR/SM58 like iron shavings orbiting a powerful magnet, George Strait, Lee Ann Womack, Keith Urban, and Shure endorser Montgomery Gentry each took their turn in the spotlight, as did Carrie Underwood, who sported additional dazzle by bringing her custom-studded UR/SM58.
Trace Atkins relied on a UR/SM58 to sing "Till the Last Shot's Fired" accompanied by the West Point Glee Club, who were also captured by UR/SM58s. Rascal Flatts closed the evening with "Here Comes Goodbye," done with UR/SM58s.

Rich's Recommendations
Amazing...NAB 2009 already past! Eric and I had a great time. Expected attendance was 130,000. 90,000 actually attended. The first two days we saw strong attendance, days three & four tapered off. The North (Audio) Hall was a little slower then the Central (Camera) Hall.
Eric and I visited with many old friends. It was great to see everyone. We especially enjoyed dinner with Leo Pedraza. Leo is a production film mixer with Columbia. I always enjoy getting together with Leo at NAB each year. It is a great time to catch up with old and new friends alike.
Eric met with many international clients. We seemed to see a lot of International interest. Clients from Italy, Brazil, Columbia, Mexico...the whole globe seemed to be represented!
All in all in was a great trip. I got to see family and to enjoy some of California and Nevada's natural beauty.

NAB Equipment Highlights
Rich and Eric saw some amazing products at the NAB Show 2009! Below our some of the highlights in the newest equipment.
Lightwave Audio A-5 News Boom Pole
The A5 News Boom Pole is identical in every way to it's sister product the G5 News pole except for the tubing. The tubing on the A5 News pole is made from a high grade 1.0mm thick aluminum alloy. This gives the pole exceptional strength at great value.
Countryman E6s Compact Omni Earset Mic
Exceptional sound in the most concealable earset yet. A hybrid between a B6 lavalier and an E6 omni directional, the E6s Compact Omni offers an elegant alternative to taping a lavalier to the face or hiding it in the hair. The E6s was developed together with our theater users to allow fast placement at the temple with minimal adjustment. The earpiece conforms to ear and stays firmly in place without tape or hair clip for quick costume changes. The microphone element, positioned just in front of ear, provides high-quality sound in a subminiature package. The microphone is ideally suited for applications requiring a low-profile solution, such as intimate theater settings, broadcast, or presentations, when visibility is more critical than gain before feedback.
Lectrosonics HM 100mW Digital Hybrid Wireless Plug-on Transmitter
The HM Digital Hybrid® UHF plug-on transmitter features a DSP-based design that allows the transmitter to operate in its native Digital Hybrid Wireless® mode, Lectrosonics 200 Series, 100 Series, IFB product groups, plus two modes for compatibility with analog receivers from other manufacturers. A unique multi-voltage phantom power feature allows the transmitter to be used with virtually any microphone, including high-current condenser types, expanding its usefulness in high-end applications such as motion picture production.
Sennheiser Introduces New Entry Level 2000 Series Wireless Microphone & IEM Systems
The series includes handheld and body-pack transmitters with single or twin receivers, and for monitoring, professional users can combine the diversity receivers of the series with single or twin monitor transmitters.
“The outstanding features of the 2000 Series are a high level of frequency flexibility and multi-channel capability with professional control via the Wireless Systems Manager software delivering a well-thought-out menu structure and superb audio quality,” explained Dawn Birr, product manager for professional wireless systems.
“In addition, the 2000 Series is backwards compatible with all generations of evolution wireless products and the familiar professional accessories of our 3000 and 5000 Series – including clip-on microphones, antennas, boosters and combiners.”
The 2000 Series makes setting up multi-channel systems fast and simple. Depending on the UHF range, the units have a switching bandwidth of up to 72 MHz in the US, in which up to 64 compatible frequency presets are available for microphones and up to 32 for monitoring systems.

3. Lets production know where Sound Department is to save valuable time on the set.
4. Easy Pop-Up and Pop-Down design. Put together in seconds.
5. Zip down front and Velcro flaps for privacy.
6. Flame Resistant!

NeoPax Sound Belts and Straps by Whitney Ince
As someone who often needs to use a leg strap or waist strap on one of the many reality shows I work on to hide a microphone pack on what seems to be ever shrinking waradrobe. I am always looking for a better solution for a long time I have used mostly the Remote Audio strap kit or just a plain ace bandage. Though these solutions work they aren’t often very comfortable for the talent. Which is a real issue on a reality show much more than on a film. It is my goal as a reality tv mixer to make the talent forget we are following them, that also includes making them forget they are wearing a mic pack. So my newest tool is the NEOPAX system which I have found to be very effective especially on very thin talent. I have also had talent tell me that they forget they are even wearing a waist or ankle strap. So you should try out a NEOPAX strap or belt.
