REGGAE MEETS AFRICA IN L.A. MAY 13TH!
|
|
In what is perhaps a first in the Los Angeles area, four acts will come together to celebrate Reggae and African fusion music styles on two stages on Wednesday, May 13, 2009. Upstairs in the Echo there will be two acts, Thrill Jockey recording artists Extra Golden who are embarking on a West Coast tour. Downstairs in the Echoplex the opening act will be Youssoupha Sidibe, a kora player and member of the mystical Baay Faal Muslim brotherhood who trained at the National Music Conservatory of Senegal. Since his arrival on the international music circuit, Youssoupha has recorded with artists such as India Arie, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Midnite, Charles Neville, Michael Franti and Spearhead, and Matisyahu.
Headlining on the downstairs Echoplex stage during what is the weekly "Dub Club" night will be international reggae legends The Meditations, a premier harmony trio vocal group who are still going strong, touring with all of three of original members: Ansel Cridland, Danny Clarke, and Winston Watson.
The audience will be able to walk between the two rooms throughout the night, and the Dub Club DJs from the Echodelic Soundsystem will be spinning their usual mix of new and old reggae and dub making for a very memorable evening of music and culture.

JOHN BROWN'S BODY RE-AMPLIFY
|
|
On Saturday, May 16th, progressive reggae band John Brown's Body performs at Southpaw. JBB's last studio album Amplify, debuted at number one on Billboard's Reggae Chart, and made iTunes "Best of 2008" list.
On March 17th, JBB returned with Re-Amplify, a new release featuring six remixes of songs from Amplify, along with a new, previously unreleased track.
http://www.myspace.com/johnbrownsbody
John Brown's Body has gone through significant changes since the release of 2005's Pressure Points. Lead singer Elliot Martin underwent throat surgery, several band members departed and most significantly, the band suffered the loss of bassist Scott Palmer. Palmer lost his battle with cancer in 2006. Emerging from these changes, the band's current line-up is a focused, more experimental outfit than ever before, challenging the usual notions of contemporary reggae.
John Brown's Body is on tour now, in support of Amplify, and their brand new release, Re-Amplify.
"Some of the most invigorating, progressive reggae released in some time." - JamBase
"...the band's energy is soaked up and spread out in all the right places, never allowing Amplify to slow down and catch its breath. A heck of an achievement..." - Glide

RAS TAKURA : : Food War
|
|
RAS TAKURA PREPARES JAMAICANS AND THE WORLD FOR THE FOOD WAR “I’n’I is a part of the revolution Yes, I am the change…., so I am fighting a FOOD WAR” Food War RasTakura Royal African Soldiers
Food security is an issue which is faced by countries globally. FOOD WAR is a Poem by RasTakura-of- Royal African Soldiers, Jamaican Dub Poetry group, which addresses the issue of food security, and the dangers of genetically modified foods. The Poem aims to inform and educate its listeners/readers of the fact that we are engage in an actual battle for consistent food supply and organic food in particular. Food security will remain a serious issue in Jamaica unless we have a consistent Governmental intervention. The Government needs to subsidise agriculture and agricultural products in order for this country on a whole to move forward. As Emperor Hail Selassie I states, ‘that a country and a people that becomes self-sufficient through the development of agriculture, can look forward to the future with confidence’. Takura who is also a farmer and student of the College of Agriculture Science & Education, (CASE) suggest that one solution for Jamaica is that the Ministry of Agriculture should undertake the operation of more state owned farms and employ youths in Agriculture. This would provide a means of employment for many youths who are willing to engage in farming as a source of income but lack the resources to do so. In addition to this, Jamaicans must adopt a philosophy of self sufficiency and be able to feed ourselves and our neighbours, only this will secure our health and well being. In light of the recent statement by the Minister of Agriculture that we should grow Cassava, as a staple that can be substitute for the present imported Rice and Flour staple, and the fact that the food can be grown almost everywhere in Jamaica with little or no technical skill; Takura urges the Minister to set up model Cassava farms and Processing Plants across the country and employ the people of the community to work and show them that it works(Cassava),thus engaging everyone in the FOOD WAR. The FOOD WAR is opposed to genetically modified foods (G.M foods) and point us to the dangers of this development. What are G.M foods? This is when the gene from separate species is used to produce a single organism, such as the using of animal genes in a plant for example ,the genes of a fish in tomato and you produce a Fish-tomato plant, so the people who like to have Fish and Tomato can have it all in one., or the crossing of Peani Walli with Tobacco, so when it is night the Tobacco plant glow’s and give a bright light. Foods that are genetically manipulated alter your normal body function. Some experts argue that it makes parts or your brain shrink in size, but we all know that once those seeds are introduce into a particular area the whole area will soon become infested with those seed types by pollination via wind, man and birds etc. Studies have shown that more than 64% of the Soya Beans grown in Canada and U.S.A are genetically modified FOOD WAR is here to reinforce the fact that the people of this country should maximise their support of our farmers, because the best food you can have is that which you produced. The single is now getting a lot of attention from Jamaica’s leading radio stations. It has been produced by Daniel Brown and the track created by Loxley Dixon who have made tracks for artist like Sizzla Kalonji, Queen Ifreka & Toney Rebel among others. TO WALK IN BEAUTY
"Oh, Great
Spirit, whose voice I hear in the wind,
Whose breath
gives life to all the world.
Hear me; I need
your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in
beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple
sunset.
Make my hands
respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear
your voice
Make me wise so
that I may understand the things you have taught my people.
Help me to
remain calm and strong in the face of all that comes towards
me.
Let me learn the
lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.
Help me seek
pure thoughts and act with the intention of helping others.
Help me find
compassion without empathy overwhelming me.
I seek strength,
not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest
enemy ...Myself.
Make me always
ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes.
So when life
fades, as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you
without shame.
