THE 15TH ANNUAL REGGAE FESTIVAL GUIDE MAGAZINE IS HERE!
|
|
The world’s oldest and largest reggae magazine, the Reggae Festival Guide is celebrating its 15 year anniversary issue!
Packed full of reggae history, lifestyle, art, photography, lifestyle and of course, festivals. Order one by clicking herehttp://www.reggaefestivalguide.com/magazine/order.shtml Started in In 1994, publisher, Kaati states, “My background is in magazine publishing and I am a reggae music fan, so I produced programs for reggae festivals for several years and then ultimately, the Reggae Festival Guide magazine with the idea that the “program” should come out before the festival to give the sponsors, artists and the event itself, more exposure… so why not put all the festivals in one “program.” And they have been doing so, every spring for the last 14 years.
What started out as a 16-page booklet in Northern California has grown in to the world’s longest running and largest reggae magazine. Years ago the corresponding website (www.reggaefestivalguide.com) and this free weekly electronic newsletter, The Reggae Festival E-Guide were added.
Now entering its 15th year, The Reggae Festival Guide magazine remains supported through advertising and sponsorship and is free to the public. 100,000 copies are distributed free throughout the United States and Canada and can be picked up by fans at music stores, hippy/Rasta boutiques, clubs, and of course, at festivals.
The magazine can be read around the globe with the Digital Edition; the link to it is hosted on the website and can be read page-by-page in its entirety.
Read & enjoy and we will see you at the festivals...

PLEASURE RETURNS IN DUB!
|

|
c/o www.rastainoz.com Pleasure Dub released on Pressure Sounds in July 2009 27th April 2009 Pleasure Dub Tommy McCook & The Supersonics Mixed by Errol Brown @ Treasure Isle Recording Studio PSCD63/PSLP 63 Format: Single CD/Single Vinyl LP Release Date: 11th July 2009 Duke Reid died from cancer in 1974 and his nephew, Errol Brown, who had been a junior engineer at Treasure Isle and who would go on to become one of the key engineers at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong Studio, took over the studio controls. He mixed three dub albums at Treasure Isle that dressed down and dubbed up some of the best of the Bond Street catalogue. Snatches of the original vocals were woven in and out of mixes that sound as fresh and as vital today as they did when they were first released… both in their original sixties incarnations and their seventies counteractions. ‘Treasure Dub Volume One’ and ‘Treasure Dub Volume Two’ have been available in various incarnations ever since. However, ‘Pleasure Dub’, the best of the set featuring Errol Brown’s cuts to rock steady classics such as ‘The Right Track’ by Phyllis Dillon, ‘The Tide Is High’ and ‘Riding On A High & Windy Way’ from The Paragons and ‘Things You Say You Love’ by The Jamaicans has never been re-pressed since its initial release. ‘Pleasure Dub’ is a record we have wanted to release for a long, long time and we are all delighted to be able to finally add a Treasure Isle album to the Pressure Sounds catalogue. We have retained the original artwork for the front cover and added an array of fabulous Treasure Isle photographs and graphics throughout the CD booklet assembled by our usual team of designers. Together with detailed sleeve notes of the Treasure Isle story that put the music into its proper context and music re-mastered to our usual exacting standards this makes for an exciting release that you will need in you your collection. This classic album takes you straight to the real roots of the music… back to Bond Street and those very first versions. The Lp will have the same tracklisting as the original album. The cd will have added bonus tracks. PSCD/LP 63 Track listing 1. Tracking Dub 2. Love Dub 3. Dub With Strings 4. Lift Off 5. Ride De Dub 6. Rema Skank 7. Bond Street Rock 8. Many Questions 9. JA GOVERNMENT TO TAKE STONE LOVE AND PETER TOSH MEMORIAL FUND TO COURT
|
|
|
|
c/o www.jamaicaobserver.com
Government will take Stone Love and the Peter Tosh Memorial Fund to court this week for not filing annual returns, which spill details about changes in equity and directors.
It's not that they owe taxes, it's that they haven't given information about the company activities throughout the year according to the Registrar of Companies (ROC).
"It means that some returns are outstanding," Heather Sutherland, compliance manager and attorney at law at the ROC, said of the companies. "Annual returns are different from tax office returns. Our returns gives a synopsis of the what has taken place in the company over the year, whether there was a change in the directors or change in share capital. It is like a history of the company it is important for the public because it is a public record. And gives the health of the company. That is why it is so important."
The annual returns cost $4,000 a year to file, but there is a $1,000 late fee.
Sutherland said that the many companies are delinquent amidst government's drive to increase tax compliance and reduce the informal economy estimated at some 40 per cent of GDP. "There are a number of companies who are delinquent and such cases are mentioned twice a week in court," she said.
There are over 200 sound systems in Jamaica but Stone Love, which was established in 1972 remains legendary. The Observer was unable to get an official comment from Stone Love, but a source at the office stated that the "accountant should have dealt with the returns and that it should not be a problem".
Stone Love's headquarters are on Burlington Avenue. The Peter Tosh Foundation is in honour of the reggae icon, who was part of the Wailers before charting on his own musical path.

T.O.K., HAILED AS THE WORLD’S GREATEST DANCEHALL SUPERGROUP; NEW ALBUM, “OUR WORLD” SET FOR AUGUST RELEASE ON VP RECORDS
|
|
Acclaimed by the New York Times as “the world’s greatest dancehall‐reggae boy band,” T.O.K. ‐ the fearless foursome of Alex, Flexx, BayC and Craigy T.– finally arrive with their third album on VP Records Our World , set to be released August 25, 2009.
Combining sweet melodies and taught R&B harmonies with tough toasting skills, T.O.K.’s versatility and unprecedented style have made them arguably the most successful group in dancehall history.
From romping club anthems to stirring one‐drop tunes, T.O.K. delivers a variety of sure‐fire radio hits on their highly anticipated opus Our World. The group covers dancehall’s prerequisites with gal tunes like “I Wanna Love You” and bad man talk on “Gangsters Never Die” The first single “Afternoon PornStar” produced by Tony “CD” Kelly, the genius responsible for some of Reggae’s biggest crossover hits (Tanto Metro and Devonte’s “Everyone Falls In Love” and Sean Paul’s “Like Glue”) will hit the airwaves this summer.”
Another standout track includes the R&B pop tinged 2008 hit “Guardian Angel”, which despite its shelf life recently became the #1 ringtone in Japan at the beginning of this month. The news was featured on the front page of Yahoo Japan which states, “It's unbelievable!” –proving that T.O.K.’s music has no expiration date.
The group first tasted stateside success via their 2001 debut album My Crew, My Dawgs and more specifically with international smash single “Eagle’s Cry”, a version of Prince's "When Doves Cry". Borrowing from various influences ‐ Boyz II Men, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder ‐ the young quartet started out doing R&B covers. However, it wasn’t long before they began to blend hardcore dancehall deejaying with their sweet harmonies to perfect their current sound.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE REMIXED
|
|
http://www.shimmyshimmyyay.blogspot.com/
Holy shit, if you thought you had some spare time on your hands, it's nothing compared to dalecooper. I've just been put on to his outstanding mash-up compilation The Good, The Bad & The Remixed, which takes tracks from different spaghetti westerns and hashes them with Sizzla vocals. Isn't the world an amazing place? Reggae has, for some reason, always had an intimate relation with cowboys, from The Lone Ranger and Clint Eastwood to The Upsetters' Return of Django. The Good, The Bad & The Remixed I think, takes the cowboy biscuit. It's quite an acquired taste, that's for sure, but a taste worth acquiring. It just works SO well, even the harder Sizzla numbers like 'Karate' turn out to fit swimmingly with the whistles, spanish guitar and gunshots (yeah who'd have thought gunshots would work next to ragga?). It draws on the best of the wild west - from A Fistful of Dollars to The Big Gundown . To be honest, there's really little of 'the bad' in the whole thing. Even the sleeve is pretty pro, and doesn't take itself too seriously (how could it I suppose). He could have gone with 'Once Upon a Time in the West Indies' too... Dalecooper, the genius behind the project (who, yes, is named after Twin Peaks' favourite FBI agent), also apparently joked that he was going to do a follow-up to this record featuring Bounty Killer over John Carpenter soundtracks...Holla-ween. I'd like to hear Elephant Man over John Williams, thanks. Jah-rassic park. You can download it in a zip file from his website

QUEEN IFRICA'S NEW ALBUM JUNE 16
|
|
|
...daring and straight-forward lyrics of a lady sing-jay Vence Morgan or Queen Ifrica as she's poignantly called, has taken the reggae world by storm since last year with "Below the Waist" and the controversial "Daddy," a lyrical protest to incest.” -San Diego Union Tribune
“Watching reggae's newest female star, Queen Ifrica, liven up a crowd sends a jolt through the body and spirit... the songs appeal to one's higher sense while at the same time making you want to jump, dance, and shout like you're at a church revival...” -Broward-Palm Beach New Times
QUEEN IFRICA, HAILED AS REGGAE’S FYAH MAMA, BREAKS NEW GROUND WITH HER TRAIL-BLAZING SOUND ON HER UPCOMING VP RECORDS ALBUM DEBUT MONTEGO BAY AVAILABLE ON JUNE 16, 2009
The poised yet audacious singer/songwriter Queen Ifrica unveils her highly anticipated LP Montego Bay on June 16, 2009. Her strikingly complex Rastafarian voice achieves a rarefied balance on this 12-song selection with a stirring mix of spiritually empowering anthems, lover’s rock tunes and searing social commentaries featured on this dynamic debut for VP Records.
The dancehall styled title track addresses her hometown of Montego Bay’s glaring discrepancy between its pristine five-star resorts verses the grim realities of a city wracked by poverty, violence and unemployment.
Her uplifting first single “Lioness on The Rise” (produced by Donovan Germaine) exudes her courageous and fierce nature at heart, then she displays her romantic side over a mesmeric one-drop beat on the rapturously sung hit “Far Away” (produced by Rickman Warren) and on “In My Dreams” (produced by C. Hurst), where her quixotic husky tone is reminiscent of the iconic song stylist Nina Simone.
She also tells a poignant tale of child molestation on “Daddy” (produced by Kemar McGregor) which has already received worldwide recognition and reached the top of reggae charts, even though certain sectors within Jamaican society attempted to get the song banned because of “Daddy’s” subject matter. “I wanted corporate Jamaica to realize that if a society is engulfed by violence we have to look at the homes where these violent tendencies are coming from,” remarks Ifrica.
“Montego Bay exposes the many sides on Queen Ifrica. She is traditionally a deejay, so we will highlight her raw fyah burn style on songs “Coconut Shell” and “Yad the East”, her heartrending sensational side on tunes like “Daddy” and her strong independence on tracks like “Lioness On Rise”, states VP Records A&R Neil Diamond.
Queen Ifrica born Ventrice Morgan, began her career in 1995 after shining at a local talent contest in her hometown of Montego Bay, Jamaica. This eye-opening experience eventually led to major stage performances in her country including the esteemed Reggae Sumfest as well as a union with Tony Rebel’s Flames Crew in 1998.
With roots firmly secured in the Rastafarian faith, she blossomed as one of the top cultural artists in reggae swarming the airwaves with hits like “Randy”, “Jus my Brethren”, “Below the Waist” and “Daddy” and stealing the stages at major festivals and shows around the world (Summer Jam in Germany, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, Bob Marley Festival, Reggae on the River in California and Reggae Sundance Festival in Holland).
Despite her hectic schedule, Ifrica is involved in several youth outreach programs in Jamaica’s inner-city counseling abuse victims and other disadvantaged individuals. She also performs at various charity events shows where proceeds are donated to the cause.
She recently signed a record deal with VP Records and her first album Montego Bay will be released in June 2009.

JOHNNY OSBOURNE AND RAS OBI ON THE SHUTTLE RHYTHM
|
|
|
|
C/O WWW.UNITEDREGGAE.COM
Soul Of Anbessa has released two new sides on their smooth roots rhythm the Shuttle. The first, Hotta Faya, features the redoubtable talents of dancehall veteran Johnny Osbourne, giving a typically anguished performance that contrasts well with the rhythm’s horns driven mix.
he second is a close harmony affair with lead vocals from the Nigerian Ras Obi entitled Kwem Naka (meaning Touch My Hand in Igbo) and decorated with plaintive lead guitar. These cuts are welcome additions to the Shuttle series, alongside previous releases from Stranger Cole, Prince Alla, BB Seaton and Dennis Alcapone. They showcase both the versatility of this understated but well crafted backing track and the propensity for Soul Of Anbessa (ancient Ethiopic for “Lion”) to live up to their name.

COURTNEY JOHN LAUNCHES - MADE IN JAMAICA
|
|
Howard Campbell, Gleaner Writer
Even though he cut his teeth in the era of compact discs and digital downloads, singer Courtney John still believes in pitching a new record the old-fashioned way. Posters promoting his new album, "Made In Jamaica", are pasted throughout Kingston.
It's a throwback to simpler times.
The dreadlocked John says producing Made In Jamaica, his third album, was anything but simple. Like its predecessor, 2007's Unselfish, it will be distributed without the support of a record company.
"I'm talking to people who are interested (in distributing), but it's a façade that record companies sell artistes. I'm past that stage," said the pencil-slim vocalist.
Production on Made In Jamaica was completed in February when John was on tour with Michael Franti and Spearhead, the punk/reggae band which recorded its last album, All Rebel Rockers, in Jamaica.
A clutch of songs from Made In Jamaica have been released. They are headed by Lucky Man, which John says is getting favourable feedback in Britain.
A cover of Rhythm and Blues group Rose Royce's "I Wanna Get Next to You", and the Sly and Robbie-produced "Ready to Go" and "Back in Love", are the other numbers doing the radio rounds.
"Unselfish" was the first album recorded as Courtney John. Previously, he was Yogie, a Canada-reared artiste who broke through with the rocking "That Was Then" and "I Go Crazy" a ballad originally done by blue-eyed soul singer Paul Davis.
John says he was satisfied with the response to Unselfish which spawned the hits "Baby Tonight" and "When You Say." He believes Made In Jamaica is a "far superior album".
"The last album had a lingering of Yogie, this record is straight Courtney John," he said. Most of Made In Jamaica's songs are traditional lovers rock complemented by three techno numbers produced by Stephen 'Lenky' Marsden. It is a blend, John said, that reflects his personality.
"I get bored easily. I'm always creating, ever evolving," he said.
Part of that evolution took place while John toured the United States with Franti, a journeyman artiste who has built a loyal international following, thanks to more than 20 years of constant touring.
The Franti/John ticket passed through cities such as Athens, Georgia, a college town known for producing the wildly successful rock band, REM, and pop group the B-52s. The five-week run was an eye-opener for John.
"It showed that people still love reggae in its purest form. To see this American using reggae to connect with young and old really inspired me," he said.
John hopes he will make a similar impression with Made In Jamaica which will be released on June 17.
