MIDWEST BLUES ALL-STARS : : COVERED UP
The Midwest Blues All-Stars announce the release of their new CD, “Covered Up,” on Hander Pander Records. With this recording, the band reinforces its blend of authenticity and in –your-face traditional Chicago Blues. “Our fans wanted us to make a record that sounded like our live performances,” said Richard Radbil, guitarist and founder of the All-Stars. After listening to this CD, you’ll definitely want to see this band live.

Fronted by Blues Harp Jimmie Davis, and supported by former Everly Brothers guitarist Sam McCue, along with bass man Dave Chyla and “swingmaster” drummer Vodie Rhinehart, this band rocks, but at the same time respects its roots.

Any true blues fans owe it to themselves to check out this thus far under appreciated group from the Midwest.

RICK ESTRIN AND THE NIGHTCATS : : TWISTED
For thirty years, Rick Estrin was the voice and face of one of the country’s best-loved blues and jump bands, Little Charlie & The Nightcats. His huge harp sound, streetwise vocals, razor-sharp lyrics and hipster persona were as much the focus of the band as Little Charlie Baty’s hard-swinging and unpredictable guitar. In fact, Rick was so much the central figure of the band, most newcomers assumed that he was “Charlie.”

Now, with Little Charlie’s retirement from touring, Rick has truly stepped up to become “the man.” With support from the ever-inventive and swinging Nightcats rhythm section of Lorenzo Farrell and J. Hansen, and a new young recruit—Norway’s greatest contribution to American blues, guitar wildman Kid Andersen—Rick has taken the band in a fresh direction, rocking harder and more intensely than ever, but never straying far from the blues.

At the core of everything are Rick’s sly, incisive and often hilariously twisted original songs. They are tales inspired by his teenage and young adult years, hanging with the musicians, lowlifes, pimps and hustlers of San Francisco’s tough Fillmore District and Hunters Point neighborhoods and on Chicago’s South and West Sides. The songs range from rollicking rock ‘n’ roll to subtle and haunting slow blues, all delivered in his patented wry and worldly-wise voice. And along with his vocals, Rick’s harmonica is front and center, proving to the world once and for all that he is one of today’s truly gifted harp players, thoroughly rooted in the blues tradition, but bringing his own sound and vision to the instrument. As Muddy Waters so perfectly expressed it, “You play like a man, boy!”

RONNIE EARL AND THE BROADCASTERS : : LIVING IN THE LIGHT
Ronnie Earl creates his most intense, emotional and passionate album to date.
In standard music industry terms, Ronnie Earl is a bright and shining anomaly. He doesn’t tour, he doesn’t show up on David Letterman, he doesn’t play at rock festivals, he rarely gives interviews, and he isn’t the slightest bit interested in what Joni Mitchell called “the star-making machinery.” But he does make some remarkable, memorable and deeply touching recordings, and a wonderfully intimate DVD.

And to underscore that point, Ronnie Earl has created Living in the Light, his fifth CD for Stony Plain, the international roots music label based in Edmonton, Alberta. Like his other albums, Living in the Light is a varied mix of blues, soul and gospel, all marked by his distinctive guitar style and the passionate conviction he brings to every track. It is also, perhaps in a contrary way, a record shot through with love, warmth and very real peace.

Ronnie Earl’s searing, deeply felt guitar playing permeates every one of the dozen tracks on Living in the Light, but there are many other surprises and deep pleasures to be found. Nine of the dozen songs are originals, written or co-written by Earl.

FOAM IT BEFORE YOU OWN IT! - MICROPHOME
St. Petersburg, FL (May 29, 2009)--The Summer NAMM show in Nashville will be a slightly cleaner place this year, as Microphome founder and president Tommy McCoy will be cleaning mics at the Players Music Accessories booth (booth 831).

A disinfectant/deodorizer designed specifically for microphones, Microphome is a fast-drying cleaning foam that aims to eliminate germs, cosmetics, and odors, leaving the mic safe to use.

Microphone was developed by McCoy, a singer/songwriter, blues guitarist and habitual inventor. "In my musical career, I've had to use a lot of grungy mics, whether at clubs, festivals or jams" he notes. "Besides being nasty and bad-smelling, unsanitized mics can be a real health hazard, and there was no easy way to deal with it. They say necessity is the mother of invention, and that's what inspired me to develop Microphome."

According to McCoy, a single pump provides a dose of alcohol-free foam that is spread onto the external surface of the mic grille, safely away from the internal electronics. After about two minutes, the residue-free foam evaporates, leaving the mic deodorized, reputedly 99.99% germ-free and safe to sing through.
"All performers should be concerned about health issues," says McCoy. "Microphome is the first and only product that addresses this concern. Now anyone can quickly and safely disinfect the mic before each sound check and performance.
As we like to say: Foam it before you own it!" Microphome !

AN INTIMATE EVENING WITH ROBBEN FORD AND FRIENDS IN TAHOE

AN INTIMATE DUET PERFORMANCE WITH ROBBEN FORD AND TOSS PANOS ALONG WITH SPECIAL GUESTS ON FRIDAY, JUNE 19 AT RIVER RANCH IN TAHOE CITY, CA

Renegade Productions and River Ranch Lodge start the festival season off with a big show on Friday, June 19 at 9pm. Legendary guitarist, Robben Ford along with Toss Panos and Jonathan Mc Euen will delight music lovers. Opening act, vocalist Anne Kerry Ford will start the evening’s entertainment at 9pm. Tickets are $25 in advance and can be purchased at www.renegadeshows.com <http://www.renegadeshows.com>  or at local ticket outlets (see below).

“The blues is a leaving, breathing art form,” explains Robben Ford, who has been playing them for most of his adult life. “They have always been sociopolitical.”

The veteran musician, who has received four Grammy nominations, a nod by Musician magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century” and has played with the likes of Joni Mitchell, George Harrison, Miles Davis, Greg Allman, Phil Lesh and Larry Carlton, puts that observation into practice on his third and latest Concord Music Group album, Truth.

While recognized by his peers and critics as a superlative instrumentalist and technician, Ford insists writing songs has kept his career on an upward trajectory. Truth features superb playing, but more importantly, it tells a story.

“On this album, I am speaking out about the things I believe in, using the language of the blues, but updating it in a modern, evolutionary context,” he explains, with new songs like the first single, “Lateral Climb,” and “Peace on My Mind,” dealing with such issues as the faltering economy and the war in Iraq with a fresh, personal approach.

“The blues is where all my songs come from,” Ford admits. “It just feels good to work with a classic musical art form and keep it alive. I feel part of a tradition, as opposed to being out there all alone trying to create songs out of thin air. It’s unfortunate that people would think of the blues as something that’s ancient. The blues is pretty universal, but there’s a boldness to this record, a language I’ve used to make it new.”

“I want my music to be about something,” concludes Ford. “I have come up with new contexts for my playing… that’s what gives it a purpose.”

Ford speaks the Truth… not just with the sound of his guitar, but the vision behind his music.

Tickets are available at the River Ranch, New Moon Natural Foods, Joby’s, Recycled Records, Mad About Music, Tahoe Hemp or online at www.renegadeshows.com <http://www.renegadeshows.com> , tickets.com, jambasetickets.com

MATH EQUATIONS HELP ANALYZE THE BLUES
Washington,(ANI): Dalhousie math professor Jason Brown has once again applied mathematical principles to music to determine what make the blues ‘the blues’.

The professor, whose groundbreaking research has already deconstructed the opening chord to The Beatles’ A Hard Days Night, has now made an attempt at analyzing the blues progression, which is said to be the ‘most famous chord progression in modern music’.

Publishing an article titled ‘Deducing the Blues’ in the journal CMS Notes, He says that the significance of this progression is singularly important to the genesis of rock ‘n’ roll.

Dr. Brown points out that numerous classic rock songs owe their structure and their universal appeal to this progression. He looks at a common blues chord progression that links them all together. According to him, the harmonic sequence is ‘perfect’ and compares the experience of listening to the progression to a roller coaster.‘The blues chord progression has been used in other genres, such as country music and jazz, perhaps indeed precisely for the thrill it can add to the harmonic underpinning of the songs. The research points towards how you might have the pace of any given chord progression ebb and flow to create and release tension along the harmonic path,’ he notes.

Dr. Brown’s ‘roller coaster’ concept uses the notion of the excitement one might feel on the amusement park ride: up and down, peak to valley and to peak again.
He applies the idea of tension and release to music, constructing a model that uses twelve bars following a sequence that assigns the most ‘exciting’ chords to key places in the sequence, with the biggest ‘climb’ at the beginning of the end of the song.

As to whether or not the same formula can be applied to other kinds of music, Dr. Brown says that the blues lends itself to this kind of mathematical modeling in a way other musical genres do not.‘Country music has no one fixed chord sequence that permeates its tunes, and jazz has even a greater variety of chord progressions for its songs. It is the fixation of blues on essentially one famous chord progression that makes it amenable to mathematical study,’ Dr. Brown points out. ‘While there are undoubtedly some great blues solos that defy explanation, mathematical principles can explain why we are so moved by blues - why it is indeed so external, so right,’ he adds.

Dr. Brown plans to continue his musical/math collective journey. ‘I continue to seek a further understanding of the process of writing music, and the connections between mathematics and the aesthetics of music. The border where the creative, emotional and analytical aspects of great songs meet is one that I want to continue to explore,’ he says. (ANI)

JAM NIGHT OF THE WEEK
The Longshot Tavern

(502) 899-7898
2232 Frankfort Ave
Louisville, KY 40206

"This Jam has been going on for 3+ years at the Long Shot Tavern in Louisville, Ky. There is a sign up list- 1st come 1st serve. The core band plays 3 songs starting about 10pm, and then the jammers are called off the list and mixed in with the band. Everyone gets 3 songs no matter what. No politics! This is one of the best open jams I have ever been a part of... Great players as the core and we’re nice guys even though we’ve played with so many stars you’d think you’re looking through the Hubble Telescope! You never know who will grace the stage."

RIVER CITY BLUES SOCIETY
The River City Blues Society continues "Bringin' The Blues To You" with our Wednesday Blues series. Next Wednesday, June 10, The Plateros, a Native American family Blues Band from a small Indian Reservation west of the Rio Grande near Albuquerque New Mexico will be performing.

On June 17 the second of our Bluz Guitar Gurlz concert series shows will feature Joanne Shaw Taylor all the way from England. Joanne cites Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, and Albert Collins as the musicians who made her want to pick up a guitar and dedicate herself to playing the blues. At the age of 23 she is taking the world by storm with her new CD "White Sugar". She is guaranteed to change your opinion of what it means to "play like a girl" forever.

On June 23rd we will feature a true rising star in the Blues world with a performance by Gina Sicilia. Gina's first CD, "Allow Me to Confess", was nominated for a Blues Music Award. This show is one of only two in Illinois this summer by this great Blues vocalist from Philadelphia, PA.

The Wednesday Blues series at the Dragon's Dome in Pekin is designed for those who want to catch some great Blues artists midweek and still make it to work the next day. These early shows start at 7:00pm and are open to the public with a budget price of only $4. Details of shows coming up in the next few weeks are below. We are adding shows to the weekly lineup all the time so check our website at www.rivercityblues.com frequently for updates.
