FOCUS OF THE MONTH

Perfect Completion and Wholeness,
Love and Acceptance
By Angela Reinhardt

Everything is perfect and whole as it is, and everyone is perfect and whole as they are, and the essence of this cannot be changed or broken.

To truly love and accept ourselves exactly as we are is the single most powerful healing experience any of us can have.

One of the main messages most of us have been indoctrinated with is that we are not OK as we are, that there is always something that should be improved or changed. We are socially taught to look for problems, for things that don’t work right, and for what is lacking. Rather than to have faith in our essential wholeness, we come to believe that there is something wrong with us on our most basic level. Sadly, we have honed a great skill at feeling bad about ourselves. We can retrain ourselves to raise our vibration, to change our perspective, to acknowledge and honor our perfect completion and wholeness, cultivating love and acceptance of ourselves and each other.

When we are experiencing or facing significant challenges and suffering, it can be difficult to grasp how everything is perfect and whole as it is. In order to work from the place of perfect completion and wholeness, we must differentiate between the vehicle (the physical body and it’s sensorial limitations) and the divine spark. When we are experiencing these challenges in this experience of life, we are not saying that there is not a problem, that would be invalidating the experience and denying reality. We must recognize and treat the vehicle in its various states of disrepair, while at the same time look past it to the divine spark, the essential component of us that always is and always remains perfect and whole.

The reality of being human and divine is that we are limited and unlimited, heavy and light; we experience suffering and joy, difficulties and ease, mistakes and successes. When we merely look at parts of ourselves - whether by focusing on an injury or condition, only positive or negative feelings, or only the body or emotions - we can’t experience what it means to be whole. But by acknowledging and accepting the full range of our experiences, thoughts and feelings, we can experience what it means to be whole.

The concept of “perfect completion and wholeness” can be a huge relief to us as humans - there is nothing left to fix. We can let go of the desire or need to make the “bad” things go away, such as feelings of grief, anxiety, or chronic pain.

Another part of the complexity of existence is that everything keeps changing. So being “perfect completion and wholeness” doesn’t mean that we just accept things and stay like that. We can choose the direction of growth and healing, guiding our inevitable change, without thinking that there is something wrong with the way we are.

How can we do this? Some simple practices to incorporate into daily life to help us cultivate love and acceptance.

1. Retrain ourselves to see the positive first. This may be a distinctly different from the way we currently view things. We can train ourselves to make snap positive judgments instead snap negative judgments about someone we don’t know, for instance. When we meet someone for the first time, we can try to think of something we like about him or her. Then begin to identify our own positive traits, small successes, and efforts to grow. Over time, we will see a shift in our overall view of people and situations, which will make it easier to convey an attitude of “perfect completion and wholeness” in our own life.

2. See the upside AND the downside in everything. When something disagreeable happens, try to associate something positive to the circumstance. When something great happens, identify some way in which it also brings difficulty. Choose balance and neutrality. Choose an attribute you possess that you consider negative and think of a situation in which that very attribute has been helpful or served some purpose. Do the same with a positive attribute. Examine how this quality may sometimes act as a hindrance for you. As we cultivate our ability to see different sides of situations, people, feelings, and experiences, we are better able to take a holistic perspective that does not need or want to leave some parts out, but embraces complexity, embraces wholeness. We begin to experience that seeing the whole picture enables us to make better choices based on a realistic view, rather than a biased one.

3. Don’t hide from yourself. There is no part of you that is too ugly, horrible, or shameful to be seen. Nothing that has happened to you and nothing that you have done makes you less than whole. When you notice a thought or action within yourself and you have the impulse to look away or push it down, that’s the time to acknowledge it. Even if you don’t know what to do with that thought, feeling, or behavior, practice recognizing that it is there and even welcome it into your life. It is present, and trying to ignore it and pretend that it is not present doesn’t make it go away. We can’t hide from OurSelves. Remembering that we are multidimensional and that we are something beyond all of the outer thoughts, words, and roles, makes is easier to turn toward the parts of ourselves that usually makes us turn away.

“Perfect completion and wholeness” means that all of this is part of the whole experience of living and being human - the struggles, the strife, the fears, the small successes. Let’s meet the challenge: to see everyone, and to love and accept everyone, as “perfect completion and wholeness“, most of all OurSelves.
