REGGAE FESTIVAL GUIDE

Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley and Nas Will Perform Together at Sumfest
On Saturday, July 25, both reggae royalty Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley and rap luminary Nas perform together at Reggae Sumfest, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

It's not a Nas performance, and it’s not a Damian Marley performance. It’s going to be a Nas and Damian Marley collaboration, specially for Reggae Sumfest,” said Johnny Gourzong, Executive Director of Summerfest Productions.

Gourzong said that this popular pairing was the result of extensive thought by the Reggae Sumfest team, as to how to make this year’s event memorable. He emphasized that this is the first time that Nas will be performing in Jamaica, and added that it “Will be an even more special performance since he will be performing with one of our brightest stars in Reggae music, a son of the great Robert Nesta Marley. What better debut in Jamaica then on the stage of Reggae Sumfest?"

“While Damian Marley has wowed the Sumfest crowd in previous years, seeing him perform with Nas will be interesting. They are working on a collaborative album, and the sounds of reggae juxtaposed with hip-hop beats should make for a spectacular performance,” said Brittany Somerset, Stage Photographer for Reggae Sumfest. The Festival starts with a beach party on Sunday July 19; has three nights of live performances from Thursday July 23 to Saturday July 25. The festival goes on overnight, because the daytime sun is too hot in Jamaica.

“We are arranging for additional international performers, but we’re not ready to release who we’re considering. You’ll just have to wait a little longer.” Gourzong teased.

“Sumfest is notorious for adding on high-profile artists at the last minute; a marketing strategy that always raises the level of anticipation throughout the Summer,” said Somerset.

CHEF MAYRA’S VEGAN WINE AND BEER 101
Beer - Some beers are fined before bottling using isinglass (from sturgeon fish bladders), gelatin, albumin derived from eggs or dried blood or casein/potassium caseinate (from milk products). Some beers also include other ingredients (e.g. flavorings, caramel, honey, lactose, colorings, and preservatives).

Beer can also use glyceryl monostearate, an anti-foaming agent that sometimes is an animal derivative, pepsin, a heading agent sometimes derived from pork, and sugar that may or may not be whitened using bone char.

Wine - Animal-derived ingredients used in wine making can include isinglass (from sturgeon fish bladders), gelatin, egg whites (or albumin) and casein.

Animal blood has been used to fine wine, but it is rarely used anymore. It was declared illegal for use in European wines. But in Some USA, Chilean and Argentinean wine they still practice the animal blood.

Many bottled bitters and most lagers are vegan. Guinness is not suitable for vegans. Most spirits are vegan except for Campari (contains cochineal) and some Vodkas (passed through bone charcoal).

What is vegan wine?
Vegan wine is wine (a fermented, alcoholic grape drink!) that is made using no animal-derived ingredients.

Why are all wines not suitable for vegans?

Many wines are made using animal-derived ingredients to assist in the processing of the wine. Whilst these ingredients in the main are filtered out of the wine before it is sold, the use of animal ingredients in the creation of the wine makes them unsuitable for consumption by vegans. Typically these ingredients are used as processing aids in the "fining" or filtration part of the wine making process to help remove solid impurities such as grape skins, stems, pips, to remove the yeast used in the fermentation process or to adjust the tannin levels in certain wines. This is done to end up with a clearer, brighter, better tasting and more presentable wine.

What animal ingredients are commonly found in wine?
The most common animal ingredients used in wine making are isinglass (a very pure form of gelatin from sturgeon fish bladders), gelatin (extract from boiled cow's or pig's hooves and sinews), egg whites (or albumin) and caseins (a protein from milk). Very occasionally blood has been used as an additive - "sangre de Toro" means "bulls blood" - but rarely literally any more. This ingredient was declared illegal for use in European wines in the aftermath of the outbreak of BSE (mad cow disease).

Are animal ingredients needed to make wine?

No! Many wines are made differently - hence vegan wine.

This article will be continued next week with more info on vegan wine and beer.

Ziggy Marley : : Family Time
Marley produced the album with legendary producer Don Was. The album features a variety of family and friends including Rita Marley (Ziggy's mother), Cedella Marley (sister), Judah Marley (daughter), Paul Simon, Jack Johnson, Willie Nelson, Toots Hibberts, Elizabeth Mitchell, Laurie Berkner, Paula Fuga and two stories narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis.

"Growing up music was an important part of my childhood," Marley says. "I see it being just as important in my children and all children's growth and development. Music helps children to grow with open minds and open hearts and this is my message. This record represents my daily family life and is inspired by my three-year-old daughter Judah and baby Gideon. It was a joy to make and opened up new avenues in my creativity. Family Time is for all families and especially the world family."

GWhizz : : Mood Swing Riddim
www.myspace.com/gwhizzbaby

G-Whizz new single 'Life' is a very thought provoking ballad about the perils of poverty and one young man's plight to achieve success from his mother's wise teachings. (876radio.com) The young singer and his label recently teamed up with upcoming directors Abidan and Mossimo for the video which was shot on location at Coronation Market and its confines in downtown Kingston.

The song is produced by TJ of TJ Records and is part of the 'Mood Swing' rhythm compilation which also features Bugle, Vybz Kartel and the Portmore Empire's prodigal son Blak Ryno. TJ Records also produced the "UNFINISHED BUSINESS RIDDIM" featuring Billboard Chart Topping Movado "I"m So Special" & Serani "No Games."

The melodic rhythm provides a basis for the listener to hear and be entertained quite like in a sultry, almost acoustic template. The song joins the league of the conscious vibe being adopted by many Reggae artists like Beres Hammond, Konshens and I-Octane among a few. (outaroad.com)

"Mi Life Soon Saut 0ut, So Mi Nuh Worry" is a very catchy chorus, rapidly spreading throughout the international airwaves! If you are interested in booking reggae singer "G-WHIZZ" for dubplates, interviews, email info@patriceconcepts.com or call 973-985-1369

The Itals : : Let Dem Talk
Following the release of the retrospective “Ina Dis Ya Time” on VP Records last winter, The Itals have come back strong with an all new set of uptempo tunes on “Let Dem Talk,” featuring the finest studio musicians in Jamaica.
The album opens with the ska-liciously tongue-in-cheek It’s Not Easy, wherein lead singer Keith Porter confides he didn’t get his freedom today, he had to put it on layaway.  Who Reign is vintage Itals, praising the Father inna stately style. The album’s title track states, “let dem talk, let dem scandal my name”, a topical number about the endless empty talk that fuels the nightly news as well as the local sussa sussa.
Two Stingray Records’ dub rhythms are artfully adapted, first in Chill Out, an atmospheric plea to stop the violence so prevalent in Jamaica and around the world today, and then So Many Times explores the search for true love and peace of mind, rendered with a healthy dose of Itals’ harmonies.
The album’s first single, My Way High Way, bounces along before snaring you with it’s catchy hook line, showcasing Mr. Porter’s smooth vocals. There For Me is an inspirational anthem crafted with strong vocal harmonies, while Anything is one of two tracks co-produced by Tad Dawkins, characterized by tight syncopated rhythms and heartfelt vocals.Dawkins’ Hard Drugs rhythm reappears on No Mercy, where those spine-tingling Itals harmonies take front stage again, urging the listener to “meekly wait and murmur not” while waiting for the meek to grow strong.
True Love and It’s You are unabashed love songs, and don’t we all enjoy a good romantic story? This is lovers’ rock at its finest, with the emphasis on rock.  Also rocking, All Is Vanity teaches the lesson that “the unexpected happens every day, even when you pray.”
The album closes with a bouncing instrumental version of It’s Not Easy, leaving the listener tapping a foot and humming along with the horn parts long after it ends.  Available on iTunes and through  ebreggae.com.

ROAD TO ZION by Damian "Jr.Gong" Marley
This is what I was listening to while working in the newsletter and I thought is was the perfect prayer this week. Peace.

excerpt from Road to Zion off the Album Welcome To Jamrock by Damian Marley:

I got to keep on walking on the road to Zion, man
We gots to keeps it burning on the road to Zion, man

Clean and pure meditation without a doubt
Don't mek dem take you like who dem took out
Jah will be waiting there we a shout
Jah will be waiting there!
In this world of calamity
Dirty looks and grudges and jealousy
And police weh abuse dem authority
Media clowns weh nuh know bout variety
Single parents weh need some charity
Youths weh need some love and prosperity
Instead of broken dreams and tragedy
By any plan and any means and strategy
Instead of broken dreams and tragedy
Youths weh need some love and prosperity
Instead of broken dreams and tragedy
By any plan and any means and any strategy
Ay! say, I got to keep on walking on the road to Zion

You know...
We got to keep on walking on the road to Zion
