NEW ZEALAND HAS A 'REGGAE DREAM'
REGGAE DREAM: Box Juice band members, from left: Ray Bishop, Toby Wright, John Ellis, Keith Millbrook, Tala Iasi and Tere Ngaeruaiti

A new musical talent that addresses important issues has emerged in Auckland. Box Juice is a reggae band following in the footsteps of many great New Zealand artists, but with one significant difference. The six-member band hopes to deliver messages that will help save the world. Their songs, written by lead singer and band spokesman Ray Bishop for government agencies such as Pharmac and the Social Development Ministry, deal with serious issues in New Zealand and throughout the world.

Mr Bishop's motivational company, Dream Academy, is the backbone of the band, and partly the reason for its creation. The Orakei resident has his own teaching philosophy, using the mediums of song dance and drama to help people develop their dreams. "I realised that young people are influenced by what's on television, through the music they listen to, and from what's in the media. People like to be entertained, so I do my work through singing, dancing and entertainment," he says.

Box Juice's debut album One Heart Many Lives was released on Wednesday.

"I recognised all the combined talent and realised we could do something special and decided we should make an album", Mr Bishop says. Each of the album's songs addresses important issues such as smoking, alcohol and family violence. One Heart Many Lives is also the title of the band's first single, which is about the impact of heart disease on men in New Zealand. Mr Bishop says reggae has a lot of potential in New Zealand.

"Its about getting people to believe in what they are listening to." He says he will be putting the causes behind the songs and what they are trying to fight for ahead of the band.

"I am pleased that we have songs with motive, to help people, and to make the world a better place."

2009 REGGAE SUMMER SPLASH PORTSMOUTH, VA SATURDAY AUG. 8TH
Inner Circle and the Itals will headline the 2009 Reggae Summer Splash coming to nTelos Wireless Pavilion on Saturday, August 8th. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m. Supporting acts for the Reggae Summer Splash will be announced soon.

Inner Circle, the Jamaican-bred, Grammy winning quintet, is one of the world's most respected reggae groups with a long string of successes stretching back to the mid-70's. Inner Circle's special brand of pop-oriented Jamaican beats and energy-filled live performances have allowed the band to transcend the traditional reggae niche and enjoy widespread crossover appeal. A testament to this is the fact that Inner Circle plays at many of the world's largest music festivals  headlining alongside towering pop and rock music icons.

Also hailing from Jamaica are The Itals. They have performed in more than 15 countries and have given hundreds of shows in the US and Canada. These include headline dates at the Fillmore, in San Francisco, the Apollo Theatre, in New York, and the Montreal Jazz Festival, broadcasting coast-to-coast on Canadian radio and television. Critics agree that, on stage, the Itals' live performances create the same level of excellence and excitement as their recordings. As one of the hardest working groups in reggae today, they continue to reach new, young audiences. With their timeless message and sweet harmonies, The Itals have created a sound that is, at once, both classic and fresh, reaching listeners of all ages.

BAIJIE : : Baijie EP
A melodic tenor by day and a shrewd deejay by night, Baijie, born Dave St. Albourn Williams,  is able to walk the border between the two, juggling wicked rhymes and soulful reggae melodies over solid Jamaican beats.  Rather than a matter of simply pulling a talented artist out of thin air, this is about music imitating life.  Growing up in two of Jamaica’s notorious garrison neighborhoods, Rae Town, East Kingston and Macgregor Gully, Vineyard Town, Baijie’s life has been defined by the borderline between rich and poor, black and white, haves and have-nots. Rather than surrender to the intense realities of ghetto living, Baijie recognized the power as well as social and political freedom generated by channeling that reality through the music.

 July 24
1951: Lynval Golding [Specials/Fun Boy Three; guitar, vocals] is born.
1954: Tony Moore [Wackies Rhythm Force; bass/vocals] is born in Kingston, Jamaica.
1993: UB40 scores its second No. 1 single, a cover of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love" on U.S. chart, as "Promises And Lies", UB40's first album of the '90s, debuts at U.K. #1.
It marks the first time that someone has covered one of Presley's top 10 hits and bettered the peak position of the original song.

FOR COMPASSION AND INNER PEACE
OH, JAH! Please allow me to open my heart to be filled with your love, to let go of hate and judgement and be filled with your loving compassion. I know that true practice of humility is in the acceptance of all beings having a right/reason to exist. Everyone is your creation. Please help my heart be at peace and release me from anger and bitterness. Amen.
