Who’s Healthier: Introverted Or Extroverted Personality Types?

How this mind-body connection controls your chemistry and what you can do about it!

You’re probably one or the other, or, at least, more one than the other. What are we talking about?  Introverted and extroverted personality types.
Some people just love social settings.  They are usually the “life of the party” and tend to make whatever they are doing a party of its own.
While these people love and thrive on the energy of most social settings, others do not.
Introverts hide from groups of people and would much rather spend their time in solitude.  The same party that charges up the extrovert completely drains the introvert.  One can easily say… especially in today’s society where everyone is so connected…

It’s Tough Being Shy

But, what if being shy was actually bad for your health?  And, what if new research actually showed it can even double your risk of death within five years?  If that just shocked you a little… you will be very interested in this…
According to a study in the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity, low levels of the extroversion personality trait may signal that blood levels of a key inflammatory molecule (interleukin 6) have crossed over a threshold linked to a doubling of risk of death within five years.
According to a June 17, 2009 press release by the University of Rochester Medical Center, “Long-term exposure to hormones released by the brain of people under stress, for instance, takes a toll on organs. Like any injury, this brings a reaction from the body's immune system, including the release of immune chemicals that trigger inflammation in an attempt to begin the healing process. The same process goes too far as part of diseases from rheumatoid arthritis to Alzheimer's disease to atherosclerosis, where inflammation contributes to clogged arteries, heart attacks and strokes.”
            Pretty amazing isn’t it?
Medical science is beginning to study the mind-body connection more and more. In doing so, it is discovering just how profound an effect personality and stress can have on one’s health and wellbeing.
But the big question is: Now that research is showing the health benefits of having an extroverted personality –

Could An Introvert Become An Extrovert…

…And get the same health benefits?
According to the University of Rochester Medical Center press release: “The findings recall an idea described as early as 1911 by French philosopher Henri Bergson that he called élan vitale or ''life force," according to the authors. This aspect of adult personality may be linked to childhood temperament as well. Some babies are very relaxed, other babies are active. Activity levels may reflect a fundamental, biologically-based energy reserve, although no one has explained the biochemistry behind it.”
It seems that people may simply be born introverts or extroverts.  But, your increasing your activity levels may be one thing you can change that can be of great benefit to your health.  Even though you cannot change your innate personality – physical exercise may be linked to the activity level in extroverts – which may help lower IL-6 levels.  But, here’s something interesting the researchers said, “Beyond physical activity, some people seem to have this innate energy separate from exercise that makes them intrinsically involved in life.”
So the question is:  Are some people just born with a different “life force” that gives them more energy… or… can you change your habits and state of mind and give yourself more “life force”?  Who knows for sure… but one thing is certain:  Chiropractors have talked about “life force” since Chiropractic’s inception in 1895, and we’re laughed at and labeled as “quacks”.  Now, researchers talk about “life force” as if there is no doubt it exists, and not only that – they are doing experiments to figure out how to possibly access more of it.  One has to wonder if a Chiropractic adjustment that relieves stress on the spine and nerves in some way enhances your life force?  Makes sense… doesn’t it?

Chiropractic and Weight Training

By Dr. Dave Schlute, D.C.

There’s no doubt that building stronger muscles through weight lifting will help in all aspects of life, especially with back pain. According to research done at the University of Alberta, and presented at the American Academy of Sports Medicine, weightlifting enhanced quality of life for back pain patients by up to 30%.

Strengthening only one part of the body will not cut it however, one researcher said. The benefit comes from bench presses for the chest, lateral pull-downs for strengthening the back, and leg presses. All three were correlated with pain reduction. When strength increased in those exercises, pain and disability decreased. More frequent training led to better results. The research was done on 240 men and women who had had no back surgery, damaged vertebrae or nerve root problems. All had chronic, non-specific lower-back pain as a result of injury to soft tissue in the lower back. All patients experienced positive results.

What role does Chiropractic play in weight lifting? Weight lifting makes the body stronger by putting more stress on the muscles, bones, and joints forcing them to adapt and become stronger.  However, the same stresses (from weight lifting) can also pull the spine out of alignment. Especially if you are someone that really pushes yourself.  This misalignment is what chiropractors call a subluxation. Subluxations can pinch the nerves that are exiting from in between the bones of the spine leading to pain, dysfunction, and loss of workout time.

In addition, the subluxation/pinched nerve complex can result in decreased muscle strength, scar tissue formation, and soft tissue injuries. And, all of this can be happening without any symptoms…as the symptom often happens last, as with most disease processes…usually when you least expect it.

Also, many people reach a plateau in the gains they make with weight training. This plateau may be caused by such a subluxation. A licensed Chiropractor can locate these subluxations and relieve the stress caused from weight lifting. This will help prevent injury and allow you to progress further with your workouts.

Karyn S. Marshall was the first woman in history to snatch more than 200 lbs, the first American woman to win a World Championship in weightlifting, and was the strongest woman in the world at one point ('Guiness Book of World Records;' International Weightlifting Federation five world records). She later became a Chiropractor. "I found my chiropractor to be the most important health professional in my athletic career," she says.

Golf great, Tiger Woods, is another example of what the benefits of Chiropractic care can offer an athlete. Tiger Woods states, “lifting weight and seeing a Chiropractor on a regular basis has made me a better golfer. I’ve been going to Chiropractors for as long as I can remember. It’s as important to my training as practicing my swing.”
These two athletes got phenomenal results using both Chiropractic and weight training, however everyone doesn’t have to be a world class athlete to take advantage of the many benefits Chiropractic care has to offer.

Ripe Tomatoes Equal Summer

Jill Nussinow, MS, RD, The Veggie Queen™

“Tomatoes taste like summer. I love them in black bean salad, salsa, Greek salad and by themselves, drizzled with balsamic vinegar,” says Registered Dietitian and life coach (Healthy Habits Coach.com) Kathy Nichols of Healdsburg.

While other summer vegetables have appeal, none have the sweetness or juiciness of a tomato, and that’s because they truly are a fruit. Thomas Jefferson was one of the first Americans to grow tomatoes, which were called "love apples".  While tomatoes have an interesting history, rather than focus on the past, let’s deal with the present. Tomatoes are a true summer gift.

If you didn’t plant tomatoes this year, the best way to find ripe ones is at the farmer’s market, a local farm or a farm stand near you. Supermarket tomatoes cannot compare, often because they’ve been refrigerated. Tomatoes benefit from gentle handling and are easily bruised once ripe. Store firm, ripe, fresh tomatoes on the countertop for a few days.  Once cut, turn them cut side down on a plate or cutting board and use quickly. You can refrigerate them, if you must but the flavor will not be as vibrant.

Nothing beats picking a tomato off the vine, taking a sweet bite, and having the warm juices run down your arm. Of course, if your favorite tomatoes are cherry tomatoes, you can easily just pop them into your mouth, like candy because they taste that sweet.

Health Update:
San Francisco Carpal Tunnel Doctor

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) “Fact Sheet”

What is it? Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) occurs when a nerve on the palm side of the wrist is pinched.  It is named after the area of the wrist from where the symptoms occur.  The Carpal Tunnel is basically a horseshoe shape made from 8 small carpal bones and the ends of the horseshoe are connected with a ligament thus completing the “tunnel.”

What are the symptoms? CTS symptoms include pain from swelling of the tendons inside the CT.  When the nerve pinch occurs, numbness, tingling, or a half asleep sensation into the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fingers occurs.  This is often worse at night due to the wrist being bent when asleep.  This often wakes the person and shaking/flicking the hand/fingers is needed to “wake them up.”  Grip weakness is also associated with CTS such as difficulty opening jars.

Equinox Fitness Personal Training Tips

What are Shin Splints? How Are They Easily Preventable?

Written By: Tony Lagomarsino, Elite Personal Trainer Equinox Fitness San Francisco

Whether you just going for a jog or training for a race, without the proper preparation you are putting yourself at risk for one of the most common running related injuries, known as shin splints. Shin splints occur along the medial side of the tibia bone (shinbone) in the connective tissue that attaches the anterior tibialis muscle and the tibia. The constant stress of running or jogging causes an inflammation of the periosteum of the tibia (sheath surrounding the bone). Shin splints are most commonly identified by pain, tenderness, and possible swelling on the interior lower half of the shin.

Though shin splints can be very painful, they are also easily preventable.  The first and easiest way to help prevent shin splints is proper implementation of a pre-run/jog stretching program. By adequately stretching the muscles of the lower leg, for example the gastrocnemius, soleus, and anterior tibialis, you can increase flexibility in these muscles which will help to prevent unnecessary tension between the muscles and bone.  Most people know how to stretch the back of their calf, but it is the front that needs attention.  By placing the top of the foot on top of a ledge pushing down and forward will get a nice deep stretch in that anterior tibialis muscle.  Strength training is another way to help decrease the chance of shin splints, but it requires much more than the common toe raise calf workout.  Toe raises are great for working the gastrocnemius and soleus, but both of those muscles are located on the posterior (back) of the lower leg.
