Jam Babes
The Jam Babes were at it again this week, cranking out Blueberry and Blackberry Jam. Here's a little story for you:

I gave a couple of jars to my accountant the day after we made these batches last week. I saw him the next day and was amused to hear him tell me that he'd eaten almost all of it, all by himself, spoonful by spoonful. He's a bike rider, so he doesn't have to worry about eating a whole jar of jam, and I know there's mostly fruit in those jars, so no one has to worry about excessive amounts of sugar. But still - that's a lot of jam! Go Jam Babes!

Short story: You'd better come get it while you can.

New products: Cocoa Bon
These fun candies are back with us, much to our delight. You might recognize them as the old "Cool Beans." As far as we can tell, the folks who owned the company said people were confused by that old name, and seemd to think that all the candy had coffee beans or jelly beans or, um, fava beans (well, maybe not) inside. ANYWAY, the new name is Cocoa Bon.

The great news is that they still taste great and are a cute addition to a gift basket if you are in a gift basket mood. If you're not, well, just tuck one into your pocket for a quick pop of flavor.

Almond Chocolate Toffee. Milk Chocolate Cherry. Dark Chocolate Mint. Double Chocolate Peanut. Or, the original, Chocolate Mint. YU - UM!!!

Talented and interesting individuals
Here's Lev. What a guy! He's been with us for a long time and has done just about every job we have. Lately he has returned and is a regular cook, making wonderful soups, new salads, and all sorts of other delicious treats.

He is about to be a father, which is pretty exciting for him. Actually we are all buzzing about it. We'll let you know who is the latest Habif as soon as he or she emerges.

Lev grew up in Tennessee and was raised by a collective group of talented cooks. His parents ran a bakery - you can tell. He and his brother Ross, who owns the Over Easy Cafe in downtown Asheville, are great additions to Asheville and have fed a whole lot of people in their young lives.

We're the lucky recipients of Lev's talents. (And so are you!)

Don't Postpone Joy Shirts
You asked. We've complied.

The black, short-sleeved t-shirts with our logo are now here. You can still get the white ones with the blue printing, but so many of you have wanted to look just like our "shopsters" that we gave in!

Dave the Honey Man
We get our Sourwood Honey from the bees, of course, but Dave here is the fellow who lugs the hives around, gathers the honey, puts it up in jars, and brings it to us here.

Richard's Award-winning sweet potato salad would not be the same without Dave's Sourwood Honey. We bring it in by the gallon, but you can probably get by with the pint jars we have in the shop.

A Note from Laurey
July 17, 2004

One year ago I signed the lease to move into this new space. I dont know about you, but it is now hard to imagine us being anywhere else. Last year on July 14th we had a party and celebrated the signing of the lease, celebrated the decision, and had a new shop blessing. We had the run of this big empty space and, as I recall, we had a fun party.

I sit here at my desk today and remember the near panic I felt about moving my office from its spot down below where I now am. How, I wondered, would I cope with a smaller space? (This office is about 15 x 20 with a big chunk taken out of one side its SMALL and four of us work here.) What would it be like to be so visible? (In the old office I could hide behind a big wooden column. In this office I am right in front of the door.)

But Emily kept telling me it would be fine, and she was right. Actually, as memory serves, there was a day when I really lost it and Emily, Karen, and Maurie had to take me across the street and stick me in the middle of their huddle and tell me it was all going to be good.

I have not been good at change historically. Im one of those people who has liked to put something in a place and leave it there. I know other people who change things all the time. Not me. At least, not in my past.

Now things feel different. I feel refreshed by change, especially by this one. I like the way things are going here and I like that it is not always exactly the same all the time anymore. I have relaxed over time, to some degree, and am letting go more and more and seeing that things are actually a whole lot better the more I relax and trust. This change has been very good.

Karen has been doing a lovely job keeping the shop jazzy and fresh. It keeps us all on our toes, staying up with what is where. The kitchen staff has been doing a fine job keeping the deli case filled with new salads. Of course we have some standards all the time too we hear about it if we dont but it makes all of us happy to see the great things on display. And, for so many of you who come three or four times a week, it makes it fun for you too.

This morning we sent out 180 boxed lunches. I came to work and saw that production was well underway. The gang were calmly assembling the boxes, and all seemed good. We have weddings, parties, lunches, and other things going on too. The place is humming. But there is plenty of space, plenty of light, plenty of room for anything.

Im pleased with this new place. The air is good. The light, strong. The mood is calm (usually) and, well, it was a good thing to do this move. Thanks for coming to see us again and again, my friends. You make all of this possible for all of us.

Yum!
