Online Interactive Recovery Tools:
Building
Motivation to Change: Often when people fail to change
their problem behaviors, they may attribute their failure to
lack of will power. The concept of “will power” is not a helpful one for
people who are trying to change compulsive behavior, in that it
traps them into all-or-nothing thinking: One either has will
power or one does not. Someone who does not appear to have the
trait of will power may feel even more helpless and hopeless
about ever changing self-defeating behaviors. Motivational
Interviewing, a technique developed by Dr. William Miller, a
psychologist at the University of New Mexico, provides an
alternative to the “will power” dilemma. His treatment
approach is based upon the assumption that if people are
appropriately motivated, they will be more effective in their
efforts to change. He
reasons that many treatment failures come about because people
attempt to change (or are encouraged by others to change)
before they are sufficiently motivated.
One of the greatest sources of motivation to change,
according to the precepts of Motivational Interviewing, is a
discrepancy between one’s values and one’s behaviors. A therapist can help build motivation for change by helping
the individual to identify and remember these discrepancies.
Heightened and sustained awareness of these discrepancies helps
individuals stay focused on the most meaningful negative
consequences of their self-defeating behaviors. For example, an
individual with bulimia who values openness and honesty may
build motivation by acknowledging the secretiveness and
outright deception that is associated with her symptoms.
Despite the negative consequences that might be associated with
them, most self-defeating behaviors provide some benefits for
the individual. In
Motivational Interviewing, it is important to identify these
benefits, however transient or illusory they may be.
Likewise, it is important to acknowledge that ending
problem behaviors typically involves discomfort and a sense of
loss. Changing often requires a person to develop new
strategies to deal with these negative consequences. For example, a person who stops purging must find a way to
tolerate feelings of fullness or a sense of being fat, without
resorting to purging. Similarly, someone who stops drinking may
need to develop new ways of coping with anxiety in social
situations.
MySelfHelp.com is beginning to incorporate
more of the principles of Motivational Interviewing into their
programs. For example, in “Take Control of Bulimia” they
included exercises on building motivation to change, based upon
negative consequences associated with various elements of the
disorder (e.g., bingeing, purging, obsession with food, and so
on). In the course of major revisions they are undertaking in
our programs, they are including sections such as “Motivate
Yourself” which involve identifying discrepancies between
one’s values and one’s behaviors, and resisting beliefs
that prevent change (e.g., “I will not be able to tolerate it
if I cannot purge after eating.”)

Real
Kids Come in All Sizes: 10 Essential Lessons to Build Your
Child’s Body Esteem Author: Kathy Kater. At a time when
children should feel secure in their body's growth, too many
American kids become anxious about size and weight and begin to
eat in ways that contribute to the very problems they hope to
avoid. Obesity, negative body image, and eating disorders are
extremely difficult to reverse once established, and can be
devastating to the self-esteem of developing bodies and egos.
Confronting two of this country's fastest-growing health
problems—body image and weight concerns among children and
teens—this practical guide shows parents how to help their
children maintain body esteem and make healthy choices a
routine part of their lives. For more information or to order

Self
-Harm Behavior and Eating Disorders: Dynamics, Assessment and
Treatment. By John L. Levitt, Randy A. Sansone and Leigh Cohn.
Publisher: Brunner-Routledge. The number of eating
disorders patients presenting with symptoms of self-harm is
growing quickly, and yet there is surprisingly little known
about this unique population. Self-Harm Behavior and Eating
Disorders explores the prevalent but largely uncharted
relationship between self-injury behaviors and eating disorders
symptoms. In the first major book to focus on this area, a
renowned group of international scholars and practitioners
addresses the subject from a variety of theoretical and
practical perspectives. The book is categorized into sections
covering epidemiology, psychodynamics, assessment, and a final
section covering potential treatment options, including
dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy,
interventions strategies, group therapy, and pharmacological
approaches. This unrivaled collection of case studies,
theoretical exploration, and practical application forms a
benchmark for the field, and offers a stepping-stone for new
research and innovative treatment strategies. In an area with
little available information, previously spread out among
diffuse sources, this volume represents the state-of-the-field
resource for anyone working with complex eating disorders
patients. For more information or to order this book go to www.taylorandfrancis.com,
please mention EDReferral.com when ordering.
Meal Support Therapy
(MST) Videos for Professionals and for Family and Friends:
MST is probably one of the most underestimated yet critical
components of the nutritional rehabilitation process in eating
disorders. British Columbia's Childrens Hospital Eating
Disorders Program has developed two videos to provide support
and information for both professionals and for family and
friends. Their first video MST for Professionals is a how-to
for health care professionals providing MST. Their latest video
introduces family and friends to meal support at home or at
school. Meal Support Therapy for Family and Friends comes with
a 36 page "how-to" manual. This video (produced in
collaboration with the Seattle Childrens Hospital Eating
Disorder Program) is useful for families and for agencies
offering support to families. It offers straightforward
scenarios of helpful meal support, tips and techniques as well
as dramatizations of "unhelpful" interventions
commonly made by family and friends. MST for Professionals (33
minutes) with 4 page support manual. $30CDN or $25US (price
includes shipping and handling, no tax required). MST for
Family and Friends (35 minutes) with 36 page how to manual.
$50CDN or $30US (price includes shipping and handling, no tax
required). Checks payable to Eating Disorders Program BCCH-D4.

The
Anorexia Workbook: How to Accept Yourself, Heal Your Suffering,
and Reclaim Your Life
by Michelle Heffner, MA and Georg H. Eifert, Ph.D.
Statistics suggests that as many as 2.5 percent of American
women suffer from anorexia; of these, further research
indicates that one in ten of these will die from the disorder.
The authors of this book are pioneering researchers in the
field of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), with numerous
research articles to their credit.
Instead of focusing efforts on judging impulses
associated with the disorder as “bad” or “negative,”
this approach encourages sufferers to mindfully observe these
feelings without reacting to them in a self-destructive way.
Guided by this more compassionate, more receptive frame of
mind, the book coaches the reader to employ various
acceptance-based coping strategies. Structured in a logical,
step-by-step progression of exercises, the workbook first
focuses on providing the reader with a new understanding of
anorexia and the ways the reader might have already tried to
control the problem. Then the book progresses through
techniques that teach how to use mindfulness to deal with
out-of-control thoughts and feelings, how to identify choices
that lead to better heath and quality of life, and how to
redirect the energy formerly spent on weight loss into actions
that will heal the body and mind. Although this book is written
specifically as self-help for anorexia sufferers, it includes a
clear and informative chapter on when you need to seek
professional treatment as well as advice on what to look for in
a therapist. For more information on this book go to http://www.newharbinger.com.
