Online Interactive Recovery Tools:

Do Self-help Resources Help People? There are numerous studies on the use of self-help resources to assist people with eating disorders and other mental health problems. The research literature indicates that while both books and Internet programs are helpful to those with eating disorders, the Web-based programs appear to be more effective. There are several reasons why Internet programs have the potential be more helpful than books, particularly with college students and young adults: (1) As documented by data collected by the Pew Internet Project, a growing majority of adult Internet users employ the Web to obtain information on health-related topics, including those involving mental health.  For many college students and young adults, the Internet has served as the primary source of information about the world for a major portion of their lives. (2) Internet programs can provide more than text and worksheets. They can include interactive exercises that provide the user with customized feedback and opportunities to learn new skills in a programmed fashion. They can also employ multimedia presentations to teach key concepts and skills. (3) Internet programs can include a significant support component, in the form of discussion boards or chat rooms.

MySelfHelp.com Moderated Discussion Board: In response to requests from MySelfHelp.com members and healthcare professionals, MySelfHelp.com has now added a support component to its programs, in the form of a moderated discussion board. Members are encouraged to peruse the board and add their comments to a wide range of mental health topics. The topics are organized in categories that correspond to the major MySelfHelp.com programs (e.g., depression, eating disorders, self-esteem, and so on). At present, the forums in Eating Disorders, include "Developing A Healthy Relationship With Food and Eating", "Body Image Issues", and "Help for Binge and Compulsive Eating".  Members can suggest new topics at any time. All posts will be reviewed by MySelfHelp.com staff to screen out any harmful or inappropriate content.

MySelfHelp.com - Treatment/Online Program combination found to be most effective: The research on self-help Internet programs indicates that treatment and online programs are more effective when combined with external guidance. Consequently, MySelfHelp.com has designed their programs to be adjuncts to treatment rather than substitutes for it. Healthcare professionals can request a passcode that will enable each user to review the MySelfHelp.com programs, so that he or she can become familiar with the contents. MySelfHelp.com also encourages professionals to download our "Clinician Tip Sheets" at http://www.myselfhelp.com/About/providers.htm, which identify the parts of their programs designed to help you to achieve specific treatment goals.

MySelfHelp.com’s complimentary 30-day preview for healthcare professionals: To receive a complimentary 30-day review of their online programs, please contact info@MySelfHelp.com and identify yourself as a healthcare professional. MySelfHelp.com welcomes feedback and suggestions.
