Durham,
NC Parent Training Weekend - Duke Eating Disorder Program
Parent Training Weekend on February 19 from 12:00-4:00 pm and
February 20th from 9:00-4:00pm at Duke University
Medical Center. Group
Leader: Nancy Zucker, Ph.D., Asst. Professor and
Director of the Duke ED Program. The Duke Eating
Disorders Program has developed a group parent training program
to assist parents in the management of their child’s
disordered eating. First, this group teaches parents skills for
acute eating disorder management. The program goes beyond the
eating disorder symptoms themselves and helps parents determine
how these symptoms help their child cope. With this knowledge,
they focus on instruction in effective coping strategies (e.g.
stress management tools, “anti-perfectionism” tools, and
mindfulness tools) so parents can both teach and role model
these skills. The Duke Eating Disorders Program offers this
program in a weekly group format. This format has the added
benefit of providing social support, a much needed benefit for
parents who have a child with an eating disorder! However, not
all parents live close enough to take advantage of such
services. Thus, they are offering this program in an intensive
weekend format. Parents will meet other families struggling
with similar management issues while learning some tools that
can aid in their struggle. Here is a list of some of the topics
covered: A General Strategy for Managing an Eating Disorder
Managing Problem Behavior; Acting as a Positive Role Model for
Your Children; Creating a Healthy Meal Environment; Targeting
Negative Perfectionism; Emotion Regulation and Communication.
Participants will get an accompanying workbook that provides
detailed explanations and examples of all material covered.
They will also form an electronic message board so parents are
able to remain in contact following this weekend. For more
information call or email Caitlin at 919-668-7301 or Caitlin.Ferriter@duke.edu.

Online Interactive Recovery Tools:
Be
a Careful Consumer of Information from MySelfHelp.com: Thanks
to the Internet and other mass media, clients have more access
than ever to information about mental health issues and other
medical problems. It is vital for consumers to be
cautious about accepting information on health matters at face
value, without evaluating it further. MySelfHelp.com can
help by encouraging clients to keep the following points in
mind:
1. Consider the source. Make sure you can identify
the source of the information. Information that comes from
“peer reviewed” professional journals tends to be more
reliable. Articles or studies that appear in these
journals are typically reviewed by other scientists or
practitioners prior to publication, to ensure the reliability
and validity of the information. Many, but not all, of the
major peer-reviewed journals are published by professional
organizations, such as the American Medical Association or the
American Psychological Association. Research that has
been funded by government agencies, such as the National
Institute of Mental Health, is also generally reviewed by other
professionals. All of these institutions are fallible, of
course, but their involvement does bring an element of
“quality control” with it. It is important to look at the
sponsorship of Internet sites before accepting the information
they offer at face value. Are there advertisements on the
site? If so, how do they relate to the information that
is being presented there?
2. Think about how the information was obtained.
Is the health information based on data from controlled
research, or is it still a theory, not yet supported by
scientific evidence? In order to be considered valid or
useful, a research finding needs to be “replicated,”
confirmed by independent researchers in other settings. Until
a particular finding is replicated, there is always the
possibility that it occurred by chance, and should not be the
basis of general conclusions.
3. Remember that correlation is not causation. Very
often the mass media report on studies that supposedly show
that a particular risk factor “causes” mental health
disorders or other problems. For example, suppose a
research study finds that depressed people watch twice as much
television than those who are not depressed. Such a
finding does not mean that watching television causes
depression. In fact, the opposite may be true – being
depressed may cause people to watch more television. Another
possibility is that a third factor not identified by the study
(e.g., unemployment, insomnia) may actually be the real
“cause” of the correlation.
4. Whenever possible, seek out an expert opinion on the
information you encounter. Be sure to discuss any
information you find with your therapist or your medical
providers, and ask for their opinions. Their involvement
provides another form of “quality control” on the
information you receive.
MySelfHelp.com is committed to developing self-help programs
that are consistent with current research findings and accepted
clinical practices. Whenever possible, they base their
interactive exercises on empirically supported treatment
techniques. The MySelfHelp.com family of interactive,
online, self-help programs includes Defeating Depression, Take
Control of Bulimia, Stop Binge Eating, Stress Management,
Overcoming Guilt, and Working on Low Self-Esteem, as well as a
moderated Discussion Board. A new bulimia program will be
available in the next few weeks. MySelfHelp.com is funded and
supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, and
programs are designed to complement therapy and reinforce
treatment goals.

Research on Eating Disorders:
The
National Institute of Mental Health - The NIMH is
sponsoring a study assessing appetite and reward in eating
disorders. Researchers need women who are 18 to 45 years old
who are recovered from anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa and who
are not taking psychoactive medications. Studies are taking
place at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The study
involves the completion of interviews and questionnaires and
subjects undergo a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging of
the brain. There is no X-ray exposure. Travel expenses are
covered and participants will be paid upon completion of the
study. For more information call 1-866-265 9289, email edresearch@upmc.edu
or visit the website www.anbn.org.
The National Institute of Mental
Health -
Research on Genes and Eating Disorders: The National
Institute of Mental Health is sponsoring a multicenter,
international study seeking to determine whether a gene or
genes might predispose individuals to develop anorexia nervosa.
They need families with at least two relatives (e.g., sisters,
brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents) who have or had
anorexia nervosa, and who would be willing to participate. The
study involves the completion of interviews, questionnaires and
a blood draw. Participants do not need to travel and will be
paid upon completion of the study. For more information call

Research:
Drop outs from in-patient treatment of anorexia nervosa.
Researchers: Zeeck A, Hartmann A, Buchholz C, Herzog T.
Objective: Aim of the study was to identify patient
characteristics that distinguish drop outs and completers from
in-patient treatment for anorexia nervosa. Method: A total of
133 consecutively admitted in-patients with anorexia nervosa
(age range 16-50 years; 92.5% women) were analyzed using
sociodemographic variables as well as measures of
psychopathology (SCL-90-R, EDI-2) and interpersonal
difficulties (IIP-C). Patients were treated in a multimodal
treatment setting, combining cognitive-behavioral and
psychodynamic components. Results: Patients, who reported fewer
symptoms, were hospitalized before and had a comorbid
depression stayed more often in psychotherapy. Patients
dropping out of treatment (31.6%) showed a trend to higher
levels of maturity fears. Subtype, age, duration of illness,
comorbid personality disorders or previous drop outs were not
predictive of dropping out. Conclusion: Addressing the high
ambivalence and maturity fears of anorexic patients should be
an essential issue in psychotherapy with this patient group.
