Online
Course:
Healing
Intractable Eating Problems, Course designed by Judy Lightstone
(formerly Dissociative Processes in Eating Disturbances: A
Feminist Object Relations Approach), 6 CEUs offered.
This
course covers the feminist Object Relations approach to working
with eating and body image disturbances. It includes training
in offering psychoeducation to your patients about how to
identify and intervene into the binge/starve or diet or
purge cycles, and following intuitive hunger-based eating guidelines. The
method taught is symptom-focused, yet psychodynamic in
orientation, allowing the therapist to understand and use the symptoms
as metaphors for other psychological issues, while still respecting
the deep pain of eating and body image obsessions. Eating
problems usually involve varying degrees of dissociation - most
especially somatoform dissociation of sensations of hunger, fullness,
and proprioceptive awareness of body size. The correlation between
compulsive eating patterns and dissociation has been noted by many,
yet there are no explanations for the causes of this
correlation, or structured interventions with patients who may initially
present with no traumatic history. Through a synthesis of anecdotal
data, experiential exercises participants can immediately apply
to their practice, theoretical formulations, and a review of
the most up-to-date research on traumatic memory and
attachment deficits, this course will cover the continuum of
complex trauma and dissociation and offer clear step by step
guidelines for assessment and intervention with so-called
"impossible to treat" patients.
Objectives - Participants will learn: Why and how to use
hunger-based symptom assessment and coaching to address
psycho-somatic dissociation when working with compulsive
eaters; To locate their patients' compulsive eating and body
image symptoms on the dissociative continuum; How to teach
patients to follow intuitive hunger-based eating guidelines;
How to apply feminist object relations theory and approach to
compulsive eating, body image distortions and shame.
Training designed for Helping the Helpers by Judy Lightstone,
MA, MS, LMFT. Judy has been training therapists and providing
professional consultation in New York and California for the
past 19 years, beginning at the Women's Therapy Centre Institute where she
received 5 years of post graduate training in their feminist
object relations approach to eating problems. She is the author
of the Workbook and
Training Manual on Working with Dissociation (1992) and her
article Compulsive Eating and Dissociation appears in the 2004
Journal of Trauma and Dissociation. She received additional
post-graduate training with faculty of the Center for Family
Learning in Bowenian Systems and has two Masters degrees, one
from New York University and one from California State
University at Hayward. In her Berkeley private practice, she
specializes in treating eating disorders and dissociation, and
in working with abuse survivors (PCE 3370), (#MFC32570). Apply

Research on
Eating Disorders:
Research
Study - Osteoporosis in Anorexia Nervosa: The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on bone loss in anorexia nervosa.
Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with
anorexia nervosa. They are investigating causes of osteopenia
(or bone loss) in the spine, hip, wrist and total body. The
study involves one visit of approximately 3 hours. If
interested, please call Jennifer Minihan, PA at 617-724-7393 or
email jminihan@partners.org.
Research
Study - Massachusetts General Hospital Study of Therapy for
Bone Loss in Anorexia Nervosa:
The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on anorexia-induced bone loss.
Their treatment study is for women aged 18-45 with anorexia
nervosa and absent or irregular menstrual periods. They are
investigating the combined use of a natural hormone and a
medication that is effective for bone loss in postmenopausal
women as a novel treatment for the bone loss seen in women with
anorexia nervosa. They hope that the combination of these two
investigational medications will help rebuild depleted bone and
prevent further bone breakdown in women with anorexia nervosa.
The study has 4 outpatient visits and 2 inpatient visits over
12 months. A stipend of up to $675 is awarded throughout the
course of the study. If interested, please call Jennifer
Minihan, PA-C at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.
The
National Institute of Mental Health -
The NIMH is sponsoring a study assessing appetite and reward in
eating disorders. Researchers need women who are 18 to 45 years
old who are recovered from anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa and
who are not taking psychoactive medications. Studies are taking
place at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The study
involves the completion of interviews and questionnaires and
subjects undergo a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging of
the brain. There is no X-ray exposure. Travel expenses are
covered and participants will be paid upon completion of the
study. For more information call 1-866-265 9289, email edresearch@upmc.edu

The National
Institute of Mental Health
- Research on Genes and Eating Disorders: The National
Institute of Mental Health is sponsoring a multicenter,
international study seeking to determine whether a gene or
genes might predispose individuals to develop anorexia nervosa.
They need families with at least two relatives (e.g., sisters,
brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents) who have or had
anorexia nervosa, and who would be willing to participate. The
study involves the completion of interviews, questionnaires and
a blood draw. Participants do not need to travel and will be
paid upon completion of the study. For more information call

Workshops for Eating
Disorder Sufferers:
New
York Workshop for Compulsive Eating and Body Image Issues:
Freedom from Compulsive Eating with Sharon K. Farber,
Ph.D., BCD on Saturday,
May 7, 2005 from 10am – 4pm. This
one day workshop is for women who have problems with compulsive
eating and body image issues, including those who have had
weight loss surgery or are considering it. In our reliance on
the diet gurus, we have lost the connection to our own bodies
and to ourselves. Diets help you lose weight by telling you
what to eat and when. Diets promote obsessive thinking about
food and feelings of deprivation and ultimately lead to
bingeing, overeating, resultant weight gain, and the "yo
yo" weight gain loss gain cycle. Diets set you up to judge
yourself harshly and to feel like a failure when dieting fails.
It is the diets that have failed, not you. If we all stopped
listening to the diet gurus and listened to our bodies instead,
we might find a way to nourish our bodies, minds and souls with
what we really need. For more information on Dr. Sharon Farber
or the workshop visit www.drsharonfarber.com.
Cost: $120 (includes lunch). Pre-registration is
required. Register online at www.wainwright.org
or call 914-967-6080.
New
York City, NY Workshop: Compulsive Eating as an Invitation to
Soulful Living with Martha Ireland Ph.D., R.N. and Leslie M.
Faerstein, Ed.D., CSW on Saturday May 14th, 2005.
This one-day workshop for compulsive eaters examines the truth
behind the realities of appearances. The disconnection between
the heart/soul and the mind supports illusions and tangled
belief systems that often manifest in the physical as a
disconnection from the body, which we identify as an eating
disorder. The
objectives of this workshop are: to recognize the
importance of the soul/mind/body connection in the healing
process; to be able to identify soulful intuition; to be
able to integrate mindful eating through the expanded nature of
soulful healing. Dr.
Martha Ireland and Leslie M. Faerstein are highly qualified
facilitators who will provide gentle guidance and sacred space
to support unwinding of your Truth and the foundation for your
Soul's Awakening. For registration contact Martha H. Ireland
PhD, RN, MC, CS, CEDS at 302-453-1233.
