Nationwide Locations - Remuda Ranch: Advanced Tools
in the Treatment of Eating Disorders – Complimentary
Educational Luncheons.
Effective
treatment of eating disorders requires cutting edge information
and tools, especially for the treatment-resistant patient. To
assist professionals in this area, Remuda Ranch will present
“Advanced Tools in the Treatment of Eating Disorders,” in a
series of luncheons throughout the country. Patients
with eating disorders often appear unmotivated and resist
change. Therefore, clinicians must be able to help these
patients accept treatment. This
presentation focuses on specific interventions designed for
patients who are struggling with their commitment to treatment
and motivation for recovery.
Participants
will be given practical assessment tools and assignments for
use with patients and will experience practical application
through case examples. Participants will: increase
their understanding of and ability to respond to the resistance
common in eating disorder patients; be able to apply specific
interventions to deal with the most difficult emotion and
behavior challenges of eating disorder patients; learn to apply motivational approaches, assessment
tools, and patient assignments to increase patient motivation
and enhance therapeutic effectiveness. The luncheons will be held from 11:30am-1:30pm and
will offer 1.5 Continuing Education Units. Register online or

Workshops
for the Public:
Wilmington,
DE Workshop - Compulsive Eating as an Invitation to Soulful
Living - A One Day Workshop for Compulsive Eaters held on
Saturday, September 10, 2005 from 9:30-5:00pm. The
workshop will be held at University of Delaware, Wilmington
Campus, Arsht Hall, Room 124, 2700 Pennsylvania Ave.
Wilmington, DE 19806-1118. Facilitators: Martha Ireland, PhD.,
R.N., CEDS, Leslie M. Faerstein, Ed.D., LCSW. This workshop
examines how compulsive eating is often the result of
disconnection between the heart/soul and the body. The
mind supports the illusions about body size and it often
tangles the belief systems that then manifest in the physical
dissociation from the body. Together we will focus on the
relationship with the body by listening to what the soul tells
us. This shift in perception fosters healing that can
positively change one’s physical, mental, and spiritual
energies. Through meditations and exercises we will experience
the role of the soul, spirit, light and energy in the healing
and recovery process. Each participant has the potential
power to soulfully heal her or himself. Intuition is the voice
of the soul and the foundation of heart/soul based healing.
The workshop will examine how to recognize intuition and how to
support and manifest it with the beautiful gift of the mind.
Workshop Objectives: To recognize the importance of the
soul/mind/body connection in the healing process; to be able to
identify soulful intuition; to be able to integrate mindful
eating through the expanded nature of soulful healing. For more
information or to register contact 302-453-1233 or www.spiralawakenings.net.
Cost: $150 to Spiral Awakenings, 137 Pawnee Court, Newark, DE
19702. This workshop will also be offered in NYC, NY on
October 22, 2005. Check website for details. www.spiralawakenings.net.

Research on Eating Disorders:
Predictors of treatment acceptance and completion in
anorexia nervosa: implications for future study designs.
Department of Psychiatry, Weill Medical College of Cornell
University, White Plains, NY 10605. Halmi KA, Agras WS, Crow S, Mitchell J, Wilson GT, Bryson
Kraemer, HC. CONTEXT: There have been very few randomized controlled
treatment studies of anorexia nervosa. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate
factors leading to nonacceptance and noncompletion of treatment
for 2 specific therapies and their combination in the treatment
of anorexia nervosa. DESIGN: Randomized prospective study.
SETTING: Weill-Cornell Medical Center, White Plains, NY;
University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; and Stanford University,
Stanford, Calif. Patients One hundred twenty-two patients
meeting DSM-IV criteria for anorexia nervosa. INTERVENTIONS:
Treatment with cognitive-behavioral therapy, fluoxetine
hydrochloride, or their combination for 1 year. MAIN OUTCOME
MEASURES: Dropout rate and acceptance of treatment (defined as
staying in treatment at least 5 weeks). RESULTS: Of the 122
randomized cases, 21 (17%) were withdrawn; the overall dropout
rate was 46% (56/122) in the remaining patients. Treatment
acceptance occurred in 89 (73%) of the 122 randomized cases. Of
the 41 assigned to medication alone, acceptance occurred in 23
(56%). In the other 2 groups, acceptance rate was
differentiated by high and low obsessive preoccupation scores
(rates of 91% and 60%, respectively). The only predictor of
treatment completion was high self-esteem, which was associated
with a 51% rate of treatment acceptance. CONCLUSION: Acceptance
of treatment and relatively high dropout rates pose a major
problem for research in the treatment of anorexia nervosa.
Differing characteristics predict dropout rates and acceptance,
which need to be carefully studied before comparative treatment
trials are conducted. Archives
of General Psychiatry. 2005 Jul;62(7):776-81.
Relapse
in anorexia nervosa: a survival analysis. Department of
Psychiatry, Toronto General Hospital and University of Toronto,
Ontario, Canada. Carter JC, Blackmore E,
Sutandar-Pinnock K, Woodside DB. BACKGROUND: Knowledge about
factors that predict relapse in anorexia nervosa (AN) is needed
for the development of effective relapse prevention treatments
and may also advance understanding of the psychopathology of
AN. The aim of the present study was to examine the rate,
timing and prediction of relapse in AN following weight
restoration in a specialized in-patient treatment programme.
METHOD: Fifty-one consecutive first-admission AN patients who
were weight-restored following in-patient treatment
participated in the study. Follow-up assessments were conducted
a median of 15 months post-discharge. Relapse of AN was defined
as a body mass index <17.5 for 3 consecutive months. Data
were analysed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox
regression. RESULTS: The overall rate of relapse was 35% and
the mean survival time was 18 months. The highest risk period
was from 6 to 17 months after discharge. Several significant
predictors of relapse were identified: a history of suicide
attempt; previous specialized treatment for an eating disorder;
severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms at presentation;
excessive exercise immediately after discharge; and residual
concern about shape and weight at discharge. CONCLUSIONS: There
continues to be a significant risk of relapse among AN patients
who remain well for the first year post-discharge. Several
variables were shown to be associated with an elevated risk of
relapse. These findings have implications for the development
of initial treatments and relapse prevention strategies for AN.

Research
Study - Osteoporosis in Anorexia Nervosa:
The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on bone loss in anorexia nervosa.
Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with
anorexia nervosa. They are investigating causes of osteopenia
(or bone loss) in the spine, hip, wrist and total body. The
study involves one visit of approximately 3 hours. If
interested, call Jennifer Minihan, PA at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.
Research
Study - Massachusetts General Hospital Study of Therapy for
Bone Loss in Anorexia Nervosa:
The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on anorexia-induced bone loss.
Their treatment study is for women aged 18-45 with anorexia
nervosa and absent or irregular menstrual periods. They are
investigating the combined use of a natural hormone and a
medication that is effective for bone loss in postmenopausal
women as a novel treatment for the bone loss seen in women with
anorexia nervosa. They hope that the combination of these two
investigational medications will help rebuild depleted bone and
prevent further bone breakdown in women with anorexia nervosa.
The study has 4 outpatient visits and 2 inpatient visits over
12 months. A stipend of up to $675 is awarded throughout the
course of the study. If interested, call Jennifer Minihan, PA-C
at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.

gene or genes might predispose individuals to develop anorexia
nervosa. They need families with at least two relatives (e.g.,
sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents) who
have or had anorexia nervosa, and who would be willing to
participate. The study involves the completion of interviews,
questionnaires and a blood draw. Participants do not need to
travel and will be paid upon completion of the study. For more

This
book uses innovative new techniques based on a revolutionary
model of psychotherapy called acceptance and commitment
therapy, or ACT, to teach readers that efforts to control and
stop anorexia may do more harm than good. Instead of focusing
efforts on judging impulses associated with the disorder as
"bad" or "negative," this approach
encourages sufferers to mindfully observe these feelings
without reacting to them in a self-destructive way. Guided to
this more compassionate, more receptive frame of mind, readers
are coached to employ various acceptance-based coping
strategies. Structured in a logical, step-by-step progression
of exercises, the workbook first focuses on providing readers
with a new understanding of anorexia and the ways they might
have already tried to control the problem. Then the book
progresses through techniques that teach how to use mindfulness
to deal with out-of-control thoughts and feelings, how to
identify choice that will lead to better heath and quality of
life, and how to redirect the energy formerly spent on weight
loss into those actions that will heal the body and mind.
Although this book is written specifically for anorexia
sufferers, it includes a clear and informative chapter on when
readers need to seek professional treatment as well as advice
on what to look for in a therapist. The goal of this book is to
teach anorexia sufferers how to redirect the drive for thinness
to achieve more healthful goals. About the Authors: Michelle
Heffner, MA, was trained in the West Virginia University
Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry eating
disorders program. She has assessed and treated eating disorder
clients in the West Virginia University Department of
Psychology clinic and the West Virginia University Carruth
Center for Counseling and Psychological Services.
Georg H. Eifert, Ph.D., is professor and chair of the
Department of Psychology at Chapman University in Orange,
California. Dr. Eifert has published widely on integrative
behavioral models and treatments of anxiety and other emotional
disorders and how recent advances in the field, such as
acceptance and commitment therapy, can be integrated with
existing behavioral interventions for clinical problems.
