Research on Eating Disorders:
Research Study - Osteoporosis in Anorexia Nervosa: The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on bone loss in anorexia nervosa.
Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with
anorexia nervosa. They are investigating causes of osteopenia
(or bone loss) in the spine, hip, wrist and total body. The
study involves one visit of approximately 3 hours. If
interested, call Jennifer Minihan, PA at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.
Research Study - Massachusetts General Hospital Study of Therapy
for Bone Loss in Anorexia Nervosa:
The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on anorexia-induced bone loss.
Their treatment study is for women aged 18-45 with anorexia
nervosa and absent or irregular menstrual periods. They are
investigating the combined use of a natural hormone and a
medication that is effective for bone loss in postmenopausal
women as a novel treatment for the bone loss seen in women with
anorexia nervosa. They hope that the combination of these two
investigational medications will help rebuild depleted bone and
prevent further bone breakdown in women with anorexia nervosa.
The study has 4 outpatient visits and 2 inpatient visits over
12 months. A stipend of up to $675 is awarded throughout the
course of the study. If interested, call Jennifer Minihan, PA-C
at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.
The National Institute of Mental Health - The NIMH is sponsoring a study assessing appetite and reward in
eating disorders. Researchers need women who are 18 to 45 years
old who are recovered from anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa and
who are not taking psychoactive medications. Studies are taking
place at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The study
involves the completion of interviews and questionnaires and
subjects undergo a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging of
the brain. There is no X-ray exposure. Travel expenses are
covered and participants will be paid upon completion of the
study. For more information call 1-866-265 9289, email edresearch@upmc.edu
or visit the website www.anbn.org.
The National
Institute of Mental Health - Research on Genes and Eating Disorders: The National Institute of Mental Health is sponsoring a
multicenter, international study seeking to determine whether a
gene or genes might predispose individuals to develop anorexia
nervosa. They need families with at least two relatives (e.g.,
sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents) who
have or had anorexia nervosa, and who would be willing to
participate. The study involves the completion of interviews,
questionnaires and a blood draw. Participants do not need to
travel and will be paid upon completion of the study. For more
information call 1-888-895-3886, email EDResearch@upmc.edu
or visit www.angenetics.org.
Research Study - Southern California Study on Eating Disorders and
Marital Relationships: Rebecca Kenyon, MA, MFT of Trish Stanley and
Associates and Oak Knoll Family Therapy Center is conducting a
doctoral dissertation on eating disorders and marital
relationships. She is looking for married women diagnosed
with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa to participate in a 1½-hour
interview with their spouse. The interview will be scheduled at
a mutually convenient day and time, and can take place at
participants' treatment facilities, if applicable, or at one of
Ms. Kenyon's San Diego County offices. Phone interviews can
also be conducted if participants reside out of the area.
Each couple will receive a book on eating disorders as
a thank you for participating. The hope is that by having both the wife's
and husband's perspectives, a better understanding of how
best to support them both in treatment and recovery
may be achieved. If interested, call Rebecca Kenyon, MA, MFT at
858-229-3420 or email rebeccajkenyon@hotmail.com.
Bariatric Survey Help Needed:
There is little published data defining the specific practices
of allied health practitioners who work with bariatric surgery
patients. Practitioners are left with a dearth of information
on which to base their interventions. Patient care is based
more on individual or small group experience rather than on
established and research-based interventions. Bariatric
medicine is a relatively new field and standards of practice
have yet to be established. This project will identify the
actual practices that clinicians are engaged in and contribute
to the development of standard of care practices in this area
of medicine. For information or to obtain a survey contact Dr.
Edi Cooke at Edi.Cooke@cshs.org.

Just a Little Too
Thin – How to Pull Your Child Back from the Brink of an
Eating Disorder by Meg Schneider and Michael Strober. Some diets are just that - a brief episode of calorie or fat
counting; they are merely attempts to lose weight for the sake
of a smaller skirt size. Other diets, however, are a prelude to
the kind of problem with food that has nothing to do with shape
or size but rather emotional issues which, left undetected,
could bring a child to the brink of a serious eating disorder.
The line between one and the other is sometimes hard to
determine and many girls slip over that line quickly and
quietly. Outlining the findings of Dr. Michael Strober's
original research--that there are three distinct stages of
eating disorders--Just a Little Too Thin helps parents
detect the severity of a child's weight issues and helps them
steer clear of--or maneuver off--a slippery slope that could
lead to Anorexia Nervosa. Offering expert guidance on how to
talk about weight and eating in ways that won't alienate the
child in question, it also provides parents with the tools to
help them cope with the emotional issues that are feeding their
child's obsession with their weight. No matter where a child
rests on the continuum of eating behaviors, Just a Little
Too Thin is an invaluable aid for parents intent on keeping
their children emotionally and physically healthy in a world of
unprecedented pressures. Order from an online bookseller: Amazon.com,
