Current
Research on Eating Disorders:
Postremission
predictors of relapse in women with eating disorders. Keel PK,
Dorer DJ, Franko DL, Jackson SC, Herzog DB. Department of
Psychology, E11 Seashore Hall, University of Iowa, Iowa City,
Iowa 52242, USA.
OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to evaluate patterns and
predictors of relapse among women with eating disorders.
METHOD: Interviews were conducted biannually to annually to
assess symptoms of eating disorders, axis I disorders,
treatment, and psychosocial function on a weekly basis for
women diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (N=136) or bulimia
nervosa (N=110) and prospectively followed for 9 years. At the
last follow-up, 229 (93%) of the subjects had been retained in
the study group. RESULTS: Relapse occurred in 36% of the women
with anorexia nervosa and 35% of the women with bulimia
nervosa. Women with intake diagnoses of anorexia nervosa,
restricting subtype, tended to develop bulimic symptoms during
relapse, whereas women with intake diagnoses of anorexia
nervosa, binge-purge subtype, or bulimia nervosa tended to
return to bulimic patterns during relapse. Greater body image
disturbance contributed to a risk of relapse in both eating
disorders, and worse psychosocial function increased the risk
of relapse in bulimia nervosa. CONCLUSIONS: These results may
explain the long-term efficacy of interpersonal therapy for
bulimia nervosa and suggest that focused body image work during
relapse prevention may enhance long-term recovery from eating
disorders.

Studies on Eating Disorders:
Research
Study - Osteoporosis in Anorexia Nervosa: The
Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on bone loss in anorexia nervosa.
Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with
anorexia nervosa. They are investigating causes of osteopenia
(or bone loss) in the spine, hip, wrist and total body. The
study involves one visit of approximately 3 hours. If
interested, call Jennifer Minihan, PA at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.
Research
Study - Massachusetts General Hospital Study of Therapy for
Bone Loss in Anorexia Nervosa: The Neuroendocrine Unit of
Massachusetts General Hospital is conducting research studies
on anorexia-induced bone loss. Their treatment study is for
women aged 18-45 with anorexia nervosa and absent or irregular
menstrual periods. They are investigating the combined use of a
natural hormone and a medication that is effective for bone
loss in postmenopausal women as a novel treatment for the bone
loss seen in women with anorexia nervosa. They hope that the
combination of these two investigational medications will help
rebuild depleted bone and prevent further bone breakdown in
women with anorexia nervosa. The study has 4 outpatient visits
and 2 inpatient visits over 12 months. A stipend of up to $675
is awarded throughout the course of the study. If interested,
call Jennifer Minihan, PA-C at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.
The
National Institute of Mental Health - The NIMH is sponsoring a
study assessing appetite and reward in eating disorders.
Researchers need women who are 18 to 45 years old who are
recovered from anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa and who are not
taking psychoactive medications. Studies are taking place at
the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The study involves
the completion of interviews and questionnaires and subjects
undergo a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging of the brain.
There is no X-ray exposure. Travel expenses are covered and
participants will be paid upon completion of the study. For

multicenter, international study seeking to determine whether a
gene or genes might predispose individuals to develop anorexia
nervosa. They need families with at least two relatives (e.g.,
sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents) who
have or had anorexia nervosa, and who would be willing to
participate. The study involves the completion of interviews,
questionnaires and a blood draw. Participants do not need to
travel and will be paid upon completion of the study. For more
information call 1-888-895-3886, email EDResearch@upmc.edu

competence and skill as well as increasing pro-active parental
involvement in their adolescent’s recovery. Participant
Criteria: parents of adolescents (18 years of age or younger)
dealing with active eating disorder issues; a commitment to
attend and participate in the 12 week program; adolescent needs
