The
relation among perfectionism, obsessive-compulsive personality

CM. New York Presbyterian Hospital-Westchester Division,
Weill Medical College of Cornell University, White Plains, New
York, USA. OBJECTIVE:
Perfectionism and obsessionality are core features of eating
disorders (ED), yet the nature of their relation remains
unknown. Understanding the relation between these traits may
enhance our ability to identify relevant behavioral
endophenotypes for ED. METHOD: Six-hundred seven individuals
with anorexia and bulimia nervosa from the International Price
Foundation Genetic Study were assessed for perfectionism,
obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), and
obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). RESULTS: No differences
were found across ED subtypes in the prevalence of OCPD and OCD,
nor with the association between OCD and OCPD. Perfectionism
scores were highest in individuals with OCPD whether alone or
in combination with OCD. CONCLUSION: Perfectionism appears to
be more closely associated with obsessive-compulsive
personality symptoms rather than OCD. The pairing of
perfectionism with OCPD may be a relevant core behavioral
feature underlying vulnerability to ED. Copyright 2005 by Wiley

Online
Interactive Recovery Tools:
Free
Online Help and Support for Family and Friends of Individuals
with Eating Disorders. MySelfHelp.com
has introduced Caring for Loves Ones, a free and confidential
online program for family and friends who want to learn more,
obtain support, and help someone with an eating disorder.
“Those who love and care about someone who has an eating
disorder often feel helpless, frightened, frustrated, and
alone,” said Dr. Richard Bedrosian, president of
MySelfHelp.com. “We wanted to create a program that would
educate them about the illness and provide them with the help
and support they need – both for their loved ones, and for
themselves.” According to Dr. Bedrosian, while there are a
growing number of resources and tools to help individuals with
eating disorders, there is not much available for their family
and friends. “The caregivers have little resources available
to them and often feel isolated and confused about how to
help,” said Dr. Bedrosian. “Our programs teach them how to
help themselves, as well as what to do to help their loved one
– and what not to do.”
Family
of Programs Developed through NIMH Funding:
The MySelfHelp.com family of interactive, online, self-help
programs includes Defeating Depression, Take Control of
Bulimia, Stop Binge Eating, Stress Management, Overcoming
Guilt, Working on Low Self-Esteem, Conquer Insomnia, and Hope
for HIV and Depression, as well as a moderated member
Discussion Board. MySelfHelp.com programs were developed in
part through grants from the National Institute of Mental
Health, and the programs are designed to complement therapy and
reinforce treatment goals.
Clinical
Trials Show Positive Results: MySelfHelp.com
just completed clinical outcome studies on the Stop Binge
Eating, Take Control of Bulimia, Defeating Depression, and
Conquer Insomnia programs, and the results showed a 43%
decrease in binge eating and a 51% decrease in purging after
three months and a 45% decrease in binge eating and 59%
decrease in purging after six months of using the programs.
Results are similar for depression symptoms. More detailed
results can be found on the individual program pages at www.MySelfHelp.com.

The
Eating Disorder Solution by Dr. Barbara Cole:
An eating disorder is a problem that causes families, friends,
and treatment providers considerable confusion and frustration.
This paradoxical and confounding problem has often gone
misunderstood and, as a result, mistreated for as long as it
has been in existence. This book sets forth a creative and
simple way for families and caregivers to understand what an
eating disorder actually is, how to think about it in healing,
helpful ways, and provides one facet of the total solution to
understanding the true nature of an eating disorder. Because it
is too difficult to fight something you cannot see, this book
proposes a way to 'see' the invisible thought process called an
eating disorder. Eating disorders are treatable as long as the
disparity and depth of misunderstanding of all involved in the
healing process are removed. The Eating Disorder Solution is a
positive contribution to the growing effort to eradicate eating
disorders. For more information visit www.drbarbaracole.com

Just
a Little Too Thin: How to Pull Your Child Back from the Brink
of an Eating Disorder by Meg Schneider, Michael Strober.
Just a Little Too Thin helps parents detect the severity of a
child's weight issues and helps them steer clear of--or
maneuver themselves off--a slippery slope that could lead to
Anorexia Nervosa. Offering expert guidance on how to talk about
weight and eating in ways that won't alienate the child in
question, it also provides parents with the tools to help them
cope with the emotional issues that are feeding their child's
obsession with their weight. No matter where a child rests on
the continuum of eating behaviors, Just a Little Too Thin is an
invaluable aid for parents intent on keeping their children
emotionally and physically healthy in a world of unprecedented
pressures. To order go to www.perseusbooks.com

Research
Studies on Eating Disorders:
Research
Study - Osteoporosis in Anorexia Nervosa:
The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on bone loss in anorexia nervosa.
Their screening study is for men and women age 12-50 with
anorexia nervosa. They are investigating causes of osteopenia
(or bone loss) in the spine, hip, wrist and total body. The
study involves one visit of approximately 3 hours. If
interested, call Jennifer Minihan, PA at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.
Research
Study - Massachusetts General Hospital Study of Therapy for
Bone Loss in Anorexia Nervosa:
The Neuroendocrine Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital is
conducting research studies on anorexia-induced bone loss.
Their treatment study is for women aged 18-45 with anorexia
nervosa and absent or irregular menstrual periods. They are
investigating the combined use of a natural hormone and a
medication that is effective for bone loss in postmenopausal
women as a novel treatment for the bone loss seen in women with
anorexia nervosa. They hope that the combination of these two
investigational medications will help rebuild depleted bone and
prevent further bone breakdown in women with anorexia nervosa.
The study has 4 outpatient visits and 2 inpatient visits over
12 months. A stipend of up to $675 is awarded throughout the
course of the study. If interested, call Jennifer Minihan, PA-C
at 617-724-7393 or email jminihan@partners.org.
The
National Institute of Mental Health - The NIMH is sponsoring a
study assessing appetite and reward in eating disorders.
Researchers need women who are 18 to 45 years old who are
recovered from anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa and who are not
taking psychoactive medications. Studies are taking place at
the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The study involves
the completion of interviews and questionnaires and subjects
undergo a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging of the brain.
There is no X-ray exposure. Travel expenses are covered and
participants will be paid upon completion of the study. For
more information call 1-866-265 9289, email edresearch@upmc.edu
or visit the website www.anbn.org.
The
National Institute of Mental Health - Research on Genes and
Eating Disorders:
The National Institute of Mental Health is sponsoring a
multicenter, international study seeking to determine whether a
gene or genes might predispose individuals to develop anorexia
nervosa. They need families with at least two relatives (e.g.,
sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents) who
have or had anorexia nervosa, and who would be willing to
participate. The study involves the completion of interviews,
questionnaires and a blood draw. Participants do not need to
travel and will be paid upon completion of the study. For more
information call 1-888-895-3886, email EDResearch@upmc.edu

with eating disorders. The
Parent Coaching Program has been specifically developed to
assist parents in effectively supporting their adolescents
through the eating disorder recovery process, while
simultaneously providing them with encouragement. Dealing with
families that are actively struggling with eating disorders can
be very stressful and frustrating even for the most skilled
treatment providers. Therefore, a goal of this program is to
enhance treatment services offered within the community. The
Parent Coaching Program is aimed at enhancing parental
competence and skill as well as increasing pro-active parental
involvement in their adolescent’s recovery. Participant
Criteria: parents of adolescents (18 years of age or younger)
dealing with active eating disorder issues; a commitment to
attend and participate in the 12 week program; adolescent needs
to be actively engaged in treatment with a therapist and
pediatrician (minimally, through the duration of this program).
Time and location: weekly group for 12 weeks, Wednesday from
7:00-8:30pm at
Beaumont
Hospital
,
Royal Oak
, MI. Facilitator: Stephanie B. Milstein, Ph.D., Contact:
