“Dame la Mano” (Give Me Your Hand)
SET YOUR TiVo’s – Check Out “Dame la Mano” (Give Me Your Hand)
Dame la Mano, 2003
directed by Heddy Honigmann
Sundance Channel
Wed., April 26, 10:15 am
(make sure you check your local listings)
On Sunday nights, Union City's La Esquina Habanera restaurant is the place to be for New Jersey's Cuban community. Here professional and amateur dancers gyrate to the sensual and spirited rhythms of the rumba, a dance veteran practitioners credit for everything from curing cancer to sexual vigor in old age. Award-winning Dutch documentarian Heddy Honigmann (CRAZY) listens to the stories of several Cuban exiles in this joyous cinematic celebration of Latin life, music and dance which culminates with an exuberant 30-minute nightclub finale.

Niña Pastori, New CD
The artist from Cádiz remains at the top of the sales charts with her new work "Joyas prestadas"
Niña Pastori, number 1 in Spain
Niña Pastori's new album, "Joyas prestadas" (Borrowed Jewels), remains in the highest spot of the list of best-selling records in Spain for the third week running. The sixth work by the singer from San Fernando (Cádiz) also holds the first place for Internet sales.
The last work by Niña Pastori is already a Gold record. With "Joyas prestadas" the artist from Cádiz, whose style blends flamenco and pop, has managed to spend three consecutive weeks at the top of the chart for sales on the Spanish market for the first time ever. Moreover, she also remains in the number one spot for Internet sales and, if that wasn't enough, her new album is also the one that is being downloaded the most from iTunes.
Ten years after the release of her first album, in "Joyas prestadas" Niña Pastori looks back and recovers her musical memory. To do so, the well-known singer from San Fernando re-interprets the songs that have left a mark on different moments in her life.
The new record by the daughter of La Pastori brings together 10 pieces that have gone down in history thanks to the voices of performers like Joan Manuel Serrat, Alejandro Sanz, Juan Luis Guerra, Antonio Machín and Marifé de Triana. Themes that have already established themselves as classics of Spanish-language music, such as "Mediterráneo", "Vivir sin aire", "Angelitos Negros" and "María de la O", that Niña Pastori now makes her own, managing to make them return to the very top of the bestsellers' lists.
My personal favorite is “Eres Luz”.
Check with Dan of Dan Zeff Guitars, he carries many imports from Spain, see below under 'Our Community News'

In the News -- Eva la Yerbabuena
“The voice of silence”
by Manuel Moraga
Yerbabuena
A good friend of mine, Francisco Manuel Díaz, was determined to give me a professional name. And one day he said, “why don’t you revive the name of Frasquito, it’s very flamenco”. I loved it and ever since then I wasn’t Eva any more, but Yerbabuena….

GIPSY KINGS
Over the years, the Gipsy Kings' trademark sound of vigorous guitar work and passionate vocals has been highlighted by a consistent winning streak in the U.S., where the group is the biggest selling French act ever. With more than fourteen albums sold worldwide, such as the gold certified Mosaique and The Very Best of Gipsy Kings, the gitane speaking group had provided a steady stream of hits to Billboard's world music, Latin and pop charts. Gipsy Kings is hoping to carry the tradition into the future with their most recent Grammy nominated acoustic release, Roots- an album that brings their music back to their Flamenco origins.

WHO WE ARE!
The above reflects our on-going passion for flamenco music, song, and dance.
VIDA FLAMENCA has dedicated itself to advancing and preserving the Spanish dance and music tradition. Our programming emphasizes increased awareness of Spanish culture, while maintaining a high level of artistry in presenting authentic dance and music of Spain. We draw from a select group of artists, internationally and here in the United States. Since the company's inception, VIDA FLAMENCA has become the premiere calling card for flamenco artists in Los Angeles. In addition to providing this free community service of up-to-date information (via these email newsletters) on local, national and international events including educational flamenco forums, we also arrange performances for corporate events, private parties, and theatrical venues and continue to host workshops for visiting artists such as: Cristóbal Reyes (Madrid) choreographer for Joaquín Cortés, just recently as part of the 2000 Academy Awards presentation choreographed by Reyes and Debbie Allen; Domingo Ortega (Madrid); Antonio Granjero (Jerez); Canito and Alegria Suarez (Sevilla); Maria Juncal (Madrid); Silvia Duran (Tel Aviv), Yaelisa (San Francisco); La Tania (San Francisco); and La Conja (New York City).
Over the past several years, VIDA FLAMENCA has worked with NBC Studios (NBC children's programming), Oasis Bar & Restaurant, Tzali's Food & Wine Group, NOHO Theater & Arts Festival, the Nosotros (Latino Emmy) Awards Show rewarding excellence in the Latino Film and Television industry, and numerous private and corporate events.
The 2003 co-production of Ay! Flamenco at the Ford Amphitheatre with Rodri Entertainment was the company's first foray into producing flamenco shows on a large scale in a major 1,200-seat venue. The show was a great success and thus prompted a much larger production in October 2004, bringing an entire 12-member company from Spain in the premier original production of "Orfeo," featuring Compañía Domingo Ortega. This acclaimed production of the classic Greek myth spins this heart-breaking tale of love and lose through the timelessness of Flamenco. Additionally, in 2005, Ortega and company returned to Los Angeles for the closing night performance for the 2005 World Music Institute as part of UNESCO hosted by the city of Los Angeles' Cultural Affairs Department and Major Antonio Villaraigosa. Packed workshops followed that included dancer Domingo Ortega, Malagueña singer Javier Riquena, and Barcelona guitarist Jorge Rodriguez.

Yo Soy Boricua, Pa' Que Tu Lo Sepas! (I'm Boricua, Just So You Know!
Directed By: Rosie Perez, Liz Garbus
New York Premiere
In her debut doc, the always sparkling Rosie Perez takes viewers down the route of New York City's Puerto Rican Day Parade and through an exploration of her heritage. Weaving snippets of family moments and the often bumpy history of the island, Perez and co director Liz Garbus build a pastiche of unbridled optimism and pride.
