Current
Research on Eating Disorders:
Obesity,
disordered eating, and eating disorders in a longitudinal study
of adolescents: how do dieters fare 5 years later?
Researchers: Neumark-Sztainer D, Wall M, Guo J, Story M, Haines
J, Eisenberg M. OBJECTIVE: To determine if adolescents
who report dieting and different weight-control behaviors are
at increased or decreased risk for gains in body mass index,
overweight status, binge eating, extreme weight-control
behaviors, and eating disorders 5 years later. DESIGN:
Population-based 5-year longitudinal study. PARTICIPANTS:
Adolescents (N=2,516) from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic
backgrounds who completed Project EAT (Eating Among Teens)
surveys in 1999 (Time 1) and 2004 (Time 2). MAIN OUTCOME
MEASURES: Weight status, binge eating, extreme weight control,
and self-reported eating disorder. RESULTS: Adolescents using
unhealthful weight-control behaviors at Time 1 increased their
body mass index by about 1 unit more than adolescents not using
any weight-control behaviors and were at approximately three
times greater risk for being overweight at Time 2 (odds ratio
[OR]=2.7 for girls; OR=3.2 for boys). Adolescents using
unhealthful weight-control behaviors were also at increased
risk for binge eating with loss of control (OR=6.4 for girls;
OR=5.9 for boys) and for extreme weight-control behaviors such
as self-induced vomiting and use of diet pills, laxatives, and
diuretics (OR=2.5 for girls; OR=4.8 for boys) 5 years later,
compared with adolescents not using any weight-control
behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: Dieting and unhealthful weight-control
behaviors predict outcomes related to obesity and eating
disorders 5 years later. A shift away from dieting and drastic
weight-control measures toward the long-term implementation of
healthful eating and physical activity behaviors is needed to
prevent obesity and eating disorders in adolescents. J Am
Diet Assoc. 2006 Apr;106(4):559-68.

Online
Interactive Recovery Tools:
Improving
Eating Disorder Treatment and Outcomes: Comprehensive
eating disorder treatment requires a team approach that
includes individual therapy, family therapy, nutritional
counseling, and working with a
primary care physician. Those with eating disorders need access
to a set of tools and resources that will reinforce treatment
techniques and provide support throughout recovery. These
resources may include self-help books and workbooks, support
groups, and online resources. Even residential treatment
programs, which are staffed around the clock, still need to
provide clients with such resources. MySelfHelp.com programs
provide online help and support for your clients and their
family members 24 hours a day, and can serve as a valuable
adjunct to the treatment you provide. These programs encourage
and engage your clients with interactive exercises,
personalized feedback, and reminders to complete assignments,
practice new techniques, and stay in touch and share results
with you. A free family support program engages and supports
the family in the recovery process – educating them about the
illness, the importance of therapy, and how they can help and
support their loved one and themselves.
Family
of Programs Developed through NIMH Funding:
The MySelfHelp.com family of interactive, online, self-help
programs includes Defeating Depression, Take Control of
Bulimia, Stop Binge Eating, Stress Management, Overcoming
Guilt, Working on Low Self-Esteem, Conquer Insomnia, and Hope
for HIV and Depression, as well as a moderated member
Discussion Board. MySelfHelp.com
programs were developed in part through grants from the
National Institute of Mental Health, and programs are designed
to complement therapy, reinforce treatment goals, and improve
treatment outcomes.
Clinical
Trials Show Positive Results: MySelfHelp.com
just completed clinical outcome studies on the Stop Binge
Eating, Take Control of Bulimia, Defeating Depression, and
Conquer Insomnia programs, and the results showed a 43%
decrease in binge eating and a 51% decrease in purging after
three months and a 45% decrease in binge eating and 59%
decrease in purging after six months of using the programs.
Results are similar for depression symptoms. More detailed
results can be found on the individual program pages at www.MySelfHelp.com.

Studies on Eating Disorders:
The
National Institute of Mental Health - The NIMH is sponsoring a
study assessing appetite and reward in eating disorders.
Researchers need women who are 18 to 45 years old who are
recovered from anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa and who are not
taking psychoactive medications. Studies are taking place at
the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The study involves
the completion of interviews and questionnaires and subjects
undergo a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging of the brain.

The
National Institute of Mental Health - Research on Genes and
Eating Disorders:

multicenter, international study seeking to determine whether a
gene or genes might predispose individuals to develop anorexia
nervosa. They need families with at least two relatives (e.g.,
sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents) who
have or had anorexia nervosa, and who would be willing to
participate. The study involves the completion of interviews,
questionnaires and a blood draw. Participants do not need to
travel and will be paid upon completion of the study. For more
information call 1-888-895-3886, email EDResearch@upmc.edu
