Current
Research on Eating Disorders:
Suicide and attempted suicide in eating
disorders, obesity and weight-image concern.
Researchers: Pompili M, Girardi P, Tatarelli G, Ruberto A, Tatarelli R. Suicide in anorexia
nervosa and bulimia nervosa is a major cause of death.
Meta-analyses have shown that individuals suffering from
anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa commit suicide more
often than their counterparts in the general population;
also a few studies have suggested that suicide is the major
cause of death among patients with anorexia nervosa,
refuting the assumption that inanition generally threatens
the life of these patients. Data concerning suicide in
bulimia nervosa, on the other hand, are still scarce but
suicide attempts are easily found among cohorts of patients
with bulimia nervosa, which constitutes a risk factor for
completed suicide. Suicidality in obesity and individuals
with disturbed weight status has been reported. Both in the
case of bulimia nervosa and obesity more long-term follow-up
studies need to be completed before the risk of suicide for
such disorders may be compared with that for anorexia
nervosa. Source:

Evaluating the treatment of eating disorders from the
patient's perspective.
Researchers:
de la Rie S, Noordenbos G, Donker M, van Furth E. OBJECTIVE: This
study investigated the evaluation of treatment of eating
disorders (EDs) from the patient's perspective in a large
community based sample in the Netherlands. It investigated
perceived helpfulness of different types of treatment.
Furthermore it investigated which patient and treatment
characteristics contribute to the evaluation of treatment.
METHOD: The Eating Disorder Examination questionnaire was
administered to 44 anorexia nervosa (AN), 43 bulimia nervosa
(BN), 69 EDNOS (ED not otherwise specified), and 148 former
ED patients. A questionnaire specifically designed for the
purpose of this study addressing treatment history and
patient's evaluation of their treatment was administered.
RESULTS: There is a substantial patient and doctor delay in
seeking and finding treatment. Treatment in specialized ED
centers, self-help groups, and treatment with a partner were
reported to be most helpful. Beneficial components of
treatment reported in specialized ED centers refer to the
communication skills of professionals, the therapist-patient
working alliance, the contact with peers, and the focus of
treatment on both ED symptoms as well as underlying issues.
CONCLUSION: The patient's perspective on treatment of EDs
does provide recommendations for the improvement of
treatment of EDs that will facilitate clinical decision
making and treatment planning. Source: Int J Eat Disord.

National Household Survey:
Eating Disorders Often Untreated, Often Impair Lives. The first nationally representative study of eating
disorders in the United States appeared in the February 2007
edition of Biological Psychiatry. The National Comorbidity
Survey Replication (NCS-R) is a nationally representative
survey of the U.S. population that was administered
face-to-face to a sample of 9,282 English-speaking adults
ages 18 and older between February 2001 and December 2003.
Among the results: Lifetime prevalence of individual eating
disorders is 0.6-4.5%; Lifetime prevalence of anorexia
nervosa is .9% in women, .3% in men; Lifetime prevalence of
bulimia nervosa is 1.5% in women, .5% in men; Lifetime
prevalence of binge eating disorder is 3.5% in women, 2.0%
in men; Eating disorders frequently impair the sufferer's
home, work, personal, and social life; Binge eating is more
common than anorexia or bulimia and is commonly associated
with severe obesity;
Eating disorders display substantial comorbidity with other
mental health disorders.
While eating disorders often coexist with other mental
health disorders, eating disorders often go undiagnosed and
untreated; A low number of sufferers obtain treatment for
the eating disorder.
Researchers found a surprisingly high rate of anorexia and
bulimia among men, representing approximately one fourth of
the cases of each disorder. Source:
Biological Psychiatry, "The Prevalence and Correlates of
Eating Disorders in the National Comorbidity Survey
Replication," pages 348-358, by James I. Hudson, Eva Hiripi,

Online/Self-Help Programs:
Improving Eating Disorder
Treatment and Outcomes: Comprehensive eating disorder treatment requires a team
approach that includes individual therapy, family therapy,
nutritional counseling, and working with a primary care
physician. Those with eating disorders need access to a set
of tools and resources that will reinforce treatment
techniques and provide support throughout recovery. These
resources may include self-help books and workbooks, support
groups, and online resources. Even residential treatment
programs, which are staffed around the clock, still need to
provide clients with such resources.
MySelfHelp.com programs provide online help and support for
your clients and their family members 24 hours a day, and
can serve as a valuable adjunct to the treatment you
provide. These programs encourage and engage your clients
with interactive exercises, personalized feedback, and
reminders to complete assignments, practice new techniques,
and stay in touch and share results with you. A free family
support program engages and supports the family in the
recovery process – educating them about the illness, the
importance of therapy, and how they can help and support
their loved one and themselves.
Family of Programs Developed through NIMH Funding: The MySelfHelp.com family of interactive, online, self-help
programs includes Defeating Depression, Take Control of
Bulimia, Stop Binge Eating, Stress Management, Conquer
Insomnia, Overcoming Guilt, Working on Low Self-Esteem,
Coping with Grief, Caring for Your Loved One, Help for
Compulsive Shopping, and Hope for HIV and Depression, as
well as a moderated member Discussion Board.
MySelfHelp.com programs were developed in part through
grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, and
programs are designed to complement therapy, reinforce
treatment goals, and improve treatment outcomes.
Clinical Trials Show Positive Results: MySelfHelp.com just completed clinical outcome studies on
the Stop Binge Eating, Take Control of Bulimia, Defeating
Depression, and Conquer Insomnia programs, and the results
showed a 43% decrease in binge eating and a 51% decrease in
purging after three months and a 45% decrease in binge
eating and 59% decrease in purging after six months of using
the programs. Results are similar for depression symptoms.
Detailed results can be found on the individual program
pages at www.MySelfHelp.com.
Positive results such as these are leading more providers,
from solo practitioners to residential treatment centers, to
recommend the use of interactive self-help programs to their
clients.
Complimentary Preview for Healthcare Professionals:
Healthcare professionals who have not reviewed the programs,
or who would like to take another look to see recent changes
and new programs, can receive a complimentary review of the
programs. Contact

identify yourself as a healthcare professional.

News - “Real
World Setting for Eating Disorder Treatment.” Milestones ED Program is pleased to
announce their new location in Cooper City, Florida (West of
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida). Milestones
offers a program of recovery for those suffering with anorexia,
bulimia, compulsive overeating, and related disorders as well
as the issues often accompanying an eating disorder.
Participants are afforded the opportunity of preparing their
own meals, supervised grocery shopping, attending local support
groups, and attending a full schedule of individual and group
therapies. Their
residential campus consists of several two bedroom/two bathroom
“upscale” townhouse-style homes situated within a gated
community featuring several amenities (pool and recreation
area, fully equipped gym, walking and jogging trails, etc.).
The program has been designed to meet the needs of individuals
seeking a “non-hospital” environment yet needing the
support and structure necessary to gain a foothold on their
recovery from an eating disorder. In effect, the program offers
a “seamless” transition from the treatment setting back
into the home environment. A fully integrated professional
staff is able to facilitate a level of care that is as
comprehensive as a traditional hospital based program without
the restrictive elements inherent in most settings offering ED
treatment. To learn more about Milestones, call

hours. Their treatment study is for women aged 18-45 with
anorexia nervosa and absent or irregular menstrual periods.
They are investigating the combined use of a natural hormone
and a medication that is effective for bone loss in
postmenopausal women as a novel treatment for the bone loss
seen in women with anorexia nervosa. They hope that the
combination of these two investigational medications will
help rebuild depleted bone and prevent further bone
breakdown in women with anorexia nervosa. The study consists
of 6
visits over 12 months. A stipend of up to $675 is awarded
throughout the course of the study. If interested, call Erinne Meenaghan, N.P. at 617-724-7393 or email

Marketing
Tips:
The 5
Most Common Email Mistakes made by Online Professionals:
1)
Not putting a clear, descriptive title in the heading of
your email. Remember that today professionals are
receiving hundreds of emails and spam a day and need to
separate out your important email from the junk.
2) Not
having a signature line which is both professional and
descriptive including your contact information You
put a return address on a piece of mail--why not make it
easy for the recipient of your email to contact you?
3)
Replying to emails without referencing the previous
conversation. It is easy to highlight the
conversation before hitting the reply button. This will put
your conversation into the email and the reader can be
reminded about your previous conversation.
4) Keep
the tone in your business emails extra professional and
polite. People cannot read your intonation over
email and anything that can be taken the wrong way will
leave your reader confused.
5)
Responding to the whole list of people who were sent the
email when you should respond to only one person.
If someone sends an email to a group of people and you hit
the REPLY button and say something to only one person, then
the whole group will read your response.
What's nearby? Is your
office near a college campus? If so, let us know and we will
add it to your listing. Anything that will help people find
you is beneficial to have included in your listing with
EDReferral.com. We will add useful information at no
additional cost.
Expansion--Private Practice
and Treatment Center both have immediate availability for
new clients! Considering announcing your practice or
treatment center in this newsletter. We can help you
write a paragraph about your services if you like.
Many professionals are shy about announcing their services,
but if you don't tell others about your unique abilities and
treatment skills, then not as many people will be able to
benefit from your service.
NOTICE: GET PUBLISHED! Members--Send
us an article you have written which would be of interest to
our readers and we will publish it on our site. We can
accept one article per month. Indicate whether it is
directed towards professionals or clients. Email the article

EDReferral.com Membership Dues Increase: Our rates still
remain significantly lower than all our major competitors. So
far we have only increased our dues for our new
members and those who fail to keep their membership dues
current. If you want to renew now and lock in your
membership dues at the current rate, email us and we will
direct you to a special page for our charter members which
will allow you to renew at the old rates for either one
year or 2 years (with an additional discount).
Increase Referrals with a Second Office Listing on
EDReferral.com:
If you have 2 offices, you can list the second
office for only $55 for the entire year--that works out to less
than $3 a month. Many
therapists have commented that this has worked out well for
them in terms of increased referrals.
Also make sure that your listing is up-to-date and
covers all areas of the eating disorder field where you provide
treatment. This
will help when people are searching for you on our site. For
more information visit
