GROUNDATION PERFORMS IN SLO
|
Tuesday April 17, 2007 Doors at 7PM The Graduate SLO 990 Industrial Way San Luis Obispo, 18 and over
Groundation has truly become a worldwide movement. Incorporating a unique blend of reggae, jazz, and dub Groundation has created a global community of fans that continues to grow. Their live shows are bursting with energy and improvisation. In the past two years, Groundation has played shows in fourteen countries spanning four continents. Highlights include playing for over 45,000 fans in Morocco, 10,000 people in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and 15,000 during a headlining spot at SummerJam in Germany. Also, on their most recent tour of Europe they sold out 19 shows including the historic Paris Olympia Theater, which they were the first reggae band to ever play. Groundation has also played both USA premier reggae festivals including a headlining spot at Sierra Nevada World Music Fest and an inspired set at Reggae on the River. In addition they have shared the stage with many of reggae’s all time greats.
Groundation has released five studio albums that are each complex and textured works revealing the full extent of the Groundation sound. With the 2006 release of their newest studio album, Upon the Bridge, they are showing the world where they’ve been and where they’re heading. The album marks the group’s first world-wide release to every continent and has been meet to top reviews in major publications around the world.
The name 'Groundation' came from trying to get everyone on the same level so people can talk and feel free to educate each other and learn from each other, and not come from a hierarchy or some type of leveled class situation. Groundation was founded in the fall of 1998 when three long time musicians Marcus Urani, Ryan Newman, and Harrison Stafford came together to form the core of the pioneering sound. They were later joined in 2000 by San Francisco based Jazz trumpeter David Chachere and the North Bay’s Kelsey Howard on trombone. Drummer Paul Spina (Les Claypool, Will Bernard’s Mother Bug) has been with the group since 2001. Harrison Stafford taught one of the only University courses on the History of Reggae Music at Sonoma State University from 1999 to 2001 Each of Groundation’s albums tells part of the story of humanity and the individual's journey through life. Just as this story continues to grow and evolve so too does Groundation. Moving forward on a mission to bring great music and energy to the people of the world.

MICHAEL FRANTI VISITS SOLDIERS AT WALTER REED
|
photo of Michael Franti by Roxanne Haynes
On Friday (March 16th) outspoken Anti- recording artist and award-winning documentary filmmaker Michael Franti visited patients at Washington ’s Walter Reed Army Medical Center . During his visit, Franti performed for the injured soldiers who live in a special ward of the hospital and their families.
“I was very moved by the courage of the young men I met who were dealing with very intense injuries from shattered bones to limb amputations and how most of them seem to have a positive attitude about their recovery and their plans for the future,” Franti says of his visit to WRAMC.
“One of the patients, Pete, played my guitar even though he still had shrapnel in his finger tips and in physical pain,” Franti explains. “He had also been burned by a roadside bomb that destroyed the Humvee he was in and didn't have full hand strength yet, but still he had this desire to practice and play guitar. Music has been a healer in my life and I thought there are probably patients like Pete who will be passing through the hospital who will have plenty of time to play the guitar or at least try it, so I went out and bought a guitar for the ward. I came away from this experience feeling a deeper commitment toward the work of Veteran's issues and the healing power of music.”
In keeping with that belief, that evening – following an uplifting performance with Spearhead at the city’s 9:30 Club as part of his ongoing Yell Fire! tour – Franti participated in a fundraiser for Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW). In addition to a screening of his acclaimed anti-war documentary, I Know I’m Not Alone: A Musician’s Search For The Human Cost Of War at Busboys & Poets, Franti also played an intimate late night acoustic set.
Last November, Franti won the Best International Documentary Award in the prestigious Harlem International Film Festival for his directory efforts on the aforementioned film. Shot during his travels to the war zones of Iraq , Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories in 2005, the film has been called “an antidote to despair” by anti-war activist Medea Benjamin of Global Exchange.
Through his heralded 2005 film about the Iraq war, I Know I’m Not Alone and the 2006 album it inspired, Yell Fire!, Franti has been heralded as “the most important artist recording and touring today who has yet to reach the masses,” by Island Records’ founder Chris Blackwell.
And the critics have resoundingly agreed: “Who says protest songs can’t be both fiery and fun,” wrote Entertainment Weekly in it’s a- review of Yell Fire! Elswhere, All Music Guide wrote, “Franti’s brain-stimulating songwriting rises to a new level of proficiency,” and Amazon.com said, “It’s easily Franti’s best album yet.”
“Artists have a unique opportunity because we have a voice, but our voice comes through something that we create,” Franti told the San Francisco Examiner recently. “So when we write about political things and our cause, it brings up something that a news anchor or a politician can’t do.”
Michael Franti and Spearhead are nearly finished with a five-week U.S. trek and have been confirmed to appear at the 2007 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester , Tennessee the weekend of June 14th – 17th.

DIMMICK, MATEEL TALK SETTLEMENT OVER REGGAE EVENT
|
Editor's note: Many of you have been making inquiries concerning the unfolding events with the two festivals, Reggae Rising and Reggae On The River both taking place in Humboldt County on August 3,4, & 5, 2007. Here is a reprinted article that appeared in the Eureka Reporter newspaper on 4/9/07. It offers the most recent information on the situation. We at Reggae Festival Guide hope for the best possible outcome for all parties, including the reggae massive!
by Wendy Butler People Productions could be a sticking point in settlement discussions between Mateel Community Center and Tom Dimmick.
“We can’t dictate who Tom Dimmick works with,” Mateel Executive Director Taunya Stapp said on Monday. “We could shut it down and we could not have a festival at all for the community.”
Stapp was speaking of the 23-year-old Reggae on the River event, which is scheduled for Aug. 3-5 at the Dimmick Ranch in Piercy. However, People Productions and Dimmick Ranch’s Reggae Rising event has been scheduled for the same place on the same days.
Mateel claims Dimmick is bound to its land-lease agreement with that organization.
Dimmick, after having been notified Mateel had fired 13-year Reggae on the River producer People Productions, told Mateel he had decided to terminate his property lease with Mateel. He said Mateel’s actions on Dec. 28 of last year were a “material breach of the lease contract,” because Mateel had allegedly assured People Productions per the contract that it would produce the event for the term of the Dimmick lease.
Mateel entered into a new license agreement with Bay Area-based 2b1 Multimedia to produce this year’s Reggae on the River fest.
In February, Mateel filed a preliminary injunction complaint against People Productions, its owner Carol Bruno and Dimmick. The complaint has several items attached, such as a claim of discrepancies in financial information and records and “unfair business practices.”
On Monday, Superior Court Judge W. Bruce Watson heard Mateel’s motion for the preliminary injunction. Both parties requested the judge not release his decision until one or the other side asks him to do so, due to the settlement discussions in process between Dimmick and Mateel.
“A settlement would be nice,” Stapp said. She added, if that can’t happen the preliminary ruling would then be released.
“If we reach a settlement, the judge’s decision will probably never be disclosed,” Mateel attorney Bill Bragg said during a phone interview following the court hearing.
There are actually two injunctions, Bragg said, of the document Watson will review.
In layman’s language, the first is that “the status quo be maintained and that Mr. Dimmick be prohibited from interfering with the Mateel’s rights to exercise under the lease,” Bragg said. “The second one is directed against People Productions.”
The latter concerns what Bragg termed as “intellectual property.”
That includes site maps, the Mateel tax ID number, promotional graphics, photos and art — “those are the specific things we ask that People Productions be asked not to use, because they still have a lot of that stuff,” he said.
Dimmick’s attorney Jeffrey Knowles said he was unable to disclose the specifics on the settlement discussion at this time.
“Mateel is claiming they have the right to hold the festival on my client’s property,” he said. “We’re trying to work out an arrangement where that collision doesn’t happen.”
At the same time, the county Planning Commission is in the process of reviewing Mateel’s conditional-use permit to hold the festival.
Last week the commission met and discussed the permit. The commission is not reviewing whether one entity or another will hold the event. It is reviewing mitigation measures and attendance levels for the 2007 reggae event.
Some issues discussed during that commission meeting were attendance levels, which officials said they had difficulty verifying, and also the prevalence of drug use.
The permit matter will be heard again by the commission.
“Obviously, the festival has to have a land permit,” Knowles said. “If we are successful in resolving the dispute through a mutually agreeable arrangement, that will give the county some comfort.”
Bragg said both sides are aware of the time-sensitive nature concerning Reggae on the River planning.
“Both sides know the old adage; we both know we have to fish or cut bait,” he said.
