DOUG COX & SALIL BHATT : : Slide to Freedom
Fusing Blues music with Indian music has been tried before, but no one
has done it quite as successfully as Doug Cox an Salil Bhatt (the son
of V.M. Bhatt). That's because they have been thinking and practicing
for over a year before actually recording together.
Doug Cox-- one of Canada's best slide guitarists, teams up with Salil Bhatt-- one of India's best slide instrumentalist. V.M. Bhatt is famous! He won a Grammy in 1994 with Ry Cooder for their album MEETING BY THE RIVER and he was considered by George Harrison (and now by Eric Clapton) as one of the world's best musicians.
SLIDE TO FREEDOM was recorded by Miles Wilkinson, one of the best sound engineers from Nashville -- necessary for capturing the intricacies of the mohan veena, V.M.Bhatt's 19-stringed instrument: the amazing tabla of Ramkumar Mishra; and Salil's instrument, the Satvik Veena, which has 20 strongs (3 for main melod, 5 for drone, and 12 sympathetic strings).

B.B. King to receive honorary degree

Blues musician B.B. King and the presidents of three New Orleans universities are among those who will receive honorary degrees this year at Commencement, Brown University officials announced this week.
King was named the greatest living guitarist by Rolling Stone magazine in 2003. A 14-time Grammy winner, he has won for Best Traditional Blues Album nine times, most recently in 2006 at the age of 80. He received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987. Since he first began recording in 1947, King has influenced generations of guitarists and has released more than 50 albums.

Navasota's Blues Alley to celebrate grand opening

Two years ago, the Texas Legislature designated Navasota as the Blues Capital of Texas.
The Grimes County town hosts the annual Navasota Blues Festival, but will now have a year-round presence with the opening of the Navasota Blues Alley.
Established by Navasota Blues Fest Inc., the Blues Alley's museum and shop will provide a central location for the city's blues music scene.
Organizers and founders will host a grand-opening celebration at its new home, 129 E. Washington St. in Navasota. Visitors can tour the building, which includes information about Navasota blues legend Mance Lipscomb.
The nonprofit group also plans to collect artifacts for the museum and will put together a monthly musician showcase.
The first of those shows will be at 6 p.m. Saturday (April 28th), when The Blues Masters play at the Filling Station Diner, 310 E. Washington St.
Blues Fest merchandise, including T-shirts, caps, Lipscomb CDs and other collectibles, will be for sale at Blues Alley.
Navasota Blues Alley will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Aretha Franklin To Pick The Cast For Her Own Musical
|
Soul superstar Aretha Franklin will be picking the stars for an upcoming musical based on her life after signing on to sit through auditions. The singer will join producers at the try-outs for the show in her native Detroit, Michigan early next month.
The musical, which is based on Franklin's autobiography Aretha: From These Roots, is set to premiere in Detroit next March.

Florida Senate Takes On Rip-Off Bands
|
TALLAHASSEE, Fla (AP) -- The Florida Senate embraced the "truth in music" movement last week with passage of legislation barring oldies acts using famous names to which they're not entitled.
The bill now awaiting House approval would prohibit a person from advertising or holding a live performance using such a name under false pretenses.
Bands with famous names performing with at least one original member who has the legal right would be allowed. The measure also would still allow people who own a federal service mark or trademark to use the name of a band.
For years, music legends from the Coasters to the Shirelles to the Drifters have complained about unauthorized impostors.
Nine states have either passed or will soon pass laws to try to make sure that if you go to see The Pretenders, you're not getting mere pretenders.
Salute-to or tribute bands would be OK, too, so Elvis impersonators need not worry.
Violating the law would be a misdemeanor

Music Festivals 101
STOCKTON, CA (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) -- The Music Management club at University of the Pacific is looking to teach local residents the art of creating and running a music festival by holding a free workshop at 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
The event, to be held at the Pacific Theatre in Stockton, California, is open to the public, and will be led by the producers of San Francisco�s annual Mission Creek Music & Arts Festival. Last year, Mission Creek featured more than 100 bands performing in 10 venues over one week in May. A concert with several bands who have performed at past Mission Creek festivals will follow the workshop.
Waukesha RiverFest is history. Waukesha BluesFest is what's happening!
The new event launches with headliners Booker T. and the MGs on Friday, Aug. 10, and Mavis Staples on Saturday, Aug. 11.
Waukesha BluesFest (Delafield, Wisconsin) organizer Bob Mittnacht said such festivals are growing in popularity throughout the country.
"Our thought is that blues music in general has a large audience age range," he said. "By siting it at Naga-Waukee it can pull in an audience from Milwaukee to Madison."
Festival proceeds are to be distributed to charities through the event's sponsor, the Waukesha Rotary Club. The Rotarians were the driving force behind the now defunct RiverFest, a free music festival on the Fox River in Frame Park.
"We had 10 good years with RiverFest ," said Theresa Leben, a Rotarian in charge of finding sponsors. "We brainstormed for over two years for a venue that would be fun and raise funds to support non-profits in the community. We found out that blues festivals in other communities had been successful. We even had Rotarians attend blues festivals in other communities to see how they were done."
Food Network films at local club during Blues Festival
NATCHEZ, Mississippi (The Natchez Democrat)� The Natchez Bluff Blues Festival might have been winding down Sunday night, but it ended with a treat when a crew from the Food Network filmed at Club 601.
�Feasting on Asphalt,� a show about eating on the road, stopped in Natchez just in time for the blues festival.
Sunday, they interviewed cooks frying up catfish at the Martin Luther King Street venue.
�We figured with blues and catfish, you can�t go wrong,� host Alton Brown said.
Brown and his crew started in Venice, La., on the coast, and are traveling up the Mississippi River in search of more than just fast food chains.
�We�re trying to discover the authentic,� Brown said. �We�re concerned about the homogenization of culture, especially food culture.
�We�re looking for the real. We figured the river was a good place to do that.�
Club 601 owner George Lee said the Food Network called the festival organizer asking for a list of venues. Lee said he was surprised when the crew landed on his doorstep.
�They just showed up,� Lee said.
He said he was thrilled to host them and pleased to get the publicity.
�It�s the Food Network. They broadcast all across the country,� he said.
The Natchez Bluff Blues Festival is in its 12th year.

Capital Area Blues Society (Lansing Michigan)
The Blue Highway leads to the Green Door on Sunday, May 20, 2007! The Capital Area Blues Society will hold the 5th Annual CABS Blues Brawl from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and feature up to ten local bands from the Lansing area. The winner will represent CABS as our competitor at the 2008 International Blues Challenge next February in Memphis, TN.

The winner of the Brawl will compete against as many as one hundred and fifty other amateur and semi-professional blues acts from around the globe.
