COLLIE BUDZ "COME AROUND" IN STORES JULY 3

The release with the ganja tune anthem of the year comes out on Sony in just a few weeks!

Born in New Orleans, raised on the isle of Bermuda with intermittent stays in urban Toronto, Colin Harper is not an easy youth to pin down geographically. His musical alter ego Collie Buddz however, is one of the most firmly grounded voices you may ever encounter. Incorporating influences from hip-hop to soca, Collie's music nevertheless has a rock-solid foundation in reggae - and its power to connect ghetto reality with the highest heights of human aspiration - that is a rarity even in Jamaica.

Born in 1981, at the dawn of the turbulent era signaled by the twin omens of Bob Marley's passing and Ronald Reagan's election, Collie was immersed in the sound system culture of Bermuda aka "The Rock" since the age of 6. "I used to come home from primary school and my brother would always be on the turntables, playin his new 45's an' I'd just be there vibesin'." The evolution of dancehall and sound-clash culture into a movement of it's own in the late 80s and early 90s set the backdrop for young Collie's discovery of his own sonic identity, and the dancehall kings of that generation - Buju Banton, Bounty Killer and Beenie Man served as his primary influences. "Back when Beenie and Bounty used to war lyrically, seeing clashesKilimanjaro an all the sound-man an' everyting the whole music scene for me took on a new meaning. Clash thing an' lyrical war became a part of my daily life from early out.

The daily operation of trading lyrics in schoolyard clashes quickly gave way to more serious combat as people startin sayin "Ay, Buddz got some lyrics!"" From an early age, some of the local sounds on the island wanted to get me on dubplate," says Collie, who stepped into the first of many vocal booths at age 16 to voice customized dubs for some Bermudian sounds. "Sounds was always trying to buss local artists in Bermuda." Consistent encouragement from the various soundmen and engineers he encountered on those dub excursions led Collie to maintain a musical focus and eventually trek to Florida for a degree in audio engineering, a path that ended behind the boards of his own Bermudian studio, jointly run with his older brother (Smokey) and Sneek Success from one of Bermuda's founding sounds, 'Newclear Weapon'. Building riddims for other artists only expanded his love for writing and voicing his own lyrics however. "I used to make these beats an' none of the tunes came out how I pictured an artist sittin' on de riddim, so I decided to start to get in the booth myself again and spit some lyrics. Unless my brother engineerin for me, I'm runnin from the board to the booth, back to the board!" Like boot camp for a one-man army, that experience molded the signature vocal style that defines Collie Buddz - a songwriter who can lay his own riddim, sing the hook and chat on the verse. "I build de riddim first and while I'm building it I don't try an' think about lyrics 'cause I'm tryin' to focus on the riddim, yunno? I make it sound as best I can and then for a day or two I rest my ears then start de writing process. I come up wif a melody firs' and get that down, then start with the lyrics." The skill with which he compartmentalizes multiple roles in the studio also extends to his easy movement between styles.

A falsetto that combines the singsong lover's rock appeal of a carnival crooner like Rupee with the deeper emotional catch of Bob Marley or Sizzla, Collie's voice sits with equal comfort over the jump-up pace of ragga-soca, 4/4 hip-hop beats or an achingly slow one drop. Most strikingly on tunes like "My Everything" he finds both the drive of dancehall and the bluesy edge of roots in a frenetic polyrhythm built around the Latin horns of David Bowie's "Let's Dance," an up-tempo track that could be just as home in a Trinidad carnival as a UK discotheque. "Some tunes I create are just to show that I could do anything I put my mind to," he explains," to show the versatility of my style." For many artists such versatility can be a curse and only a select few can maintain a distinctive voice when so many styles come so easy. But on tracks like "Moving On," the layers of competing influences seem less like contradictions and more like necessary stages in the development of a larger persona, something like the succession of roles from pimp, to preacher, to something like a revolutionary that formed Malcolm X. Instead of pulling the song apart, the warring elements are all somehow essential to a larger vision reflected in his lyrics: "Feel like me cyan move an' trap in a cage / still searchin' for the words to put 'pon the page." It,s that discovery of timeless roots even within the sweatiest dancehall track that marks the culmination of Collie's growth.

"Nowadays when I go to put on a CD, its old tune: Alton Ellis, The Meditations, The Heptones, Skatalites, Jacob Miller, Eric Monty Morris; love the rockers music. From that I start to teach myself some of the history of this music, that's where I started to come a little more versatile with the singin' the foundation just straight reality, yunno. I like dancehall, but de foundation and conscious tune really what me love."

THREE REGGAE ARTISTS SIGN TOLERANCE PACT

Reggae artists Beenie Man, Sizzla and Capleton have signed a "Reggae Compassionate Act" and promised to ban their use of anti-gay lyrics in their music, the UK-based music paper NME (New Music Express) reported.

The pledge is to "respect and uphold the rights of all individuals to live without violence due to their religion, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity or gender," according to NME.

UK gay rights group OutRage! and other activists there and in the United States had conducted a three-year Stop Murder Music campaign against the artists and the record label that carries them.

OutRage! co-founder Peter Tatchell said the move was a positive step for ensuring tolerance.

"The singers' rejection of homophobia and sexism is an important milestone," he told NME. "We rejoice at their new commitment to music without prejudice . . . Having these major reggae stars renounce homophobia will influence their fans and the wider public to rethink bigoted attitudes."

The act does have its faults: Many artists have not signed the agreement and some activists are skeptic over whether the promise will be adhered to. A similar pact was agreed upon two years ago with Beenie Man and other artists.

Five other targeted artists: Elephant Man, TOK, Bounty Killa, Vybz Kartel and Buju Banton -- have not signed the Reggae Compassionate Act and boycotts against them will continue, Tatchell said.

THE WAILERS BRING BOB MARLEY'S ORIGINAL MUSIC - THE SOUL STIRRING MAGIC OF REGGAE - TO THE HISTORIC ASHLAND ARMORY ON THURSDAY, JUNE 28

The Wailers led by Aston "Familyman" Barrett are carrying on the spirit and musical dominance that was created by Bob Marley and Familyman on Thursday, June 28 at the Historic Ashland Armory at 9pm. This is an all-ages venue and the doors open at 8pm.

Recognized throughout the world as the architect of reggae, ìFamilyman created a music genre that rose to world domination when he teamed up with Bob Marley as his bassist and musical director. Familyman and his band, The Wailers, have continued to tour the world leaving no doubt that the musical legacy he and Bob Marley created.

As The Wailers, Familyman has pushed the limits of The Wailers, by assembling original band members that toured with Bob Marley making this reunion an unprecedented musical event.

The name Wailers first applied to groups led by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston in the mid-sixties, when ska was the ruling sound in Jamaican music. By the end of the decade this triumvirate had teamed up with the Barrett brothers and begun to dominate the early reggae scene, recording untold hits for producer Lee "Scratch" Perry. After signing to Island Records in 1971, the name Wailers referred to Bob Marley's backing band. When Peter and Bunny then left the group two years later, it was officially passed onto Aston "Familyman" Barrett and his late brother Carlton, who died in 1987. Bob Marley and The Wailers would then go on to break musical history by selling well over 250 million records worldwide. Clearly, Familyman is the sole beneficiary of The Wailers' mantle and whilst other long-standing members still record and tour with the band, it is Marley's former bassist and musical arranger, Familyman who continues to spearhead his musical legacy.

In summary, The Wailers Band remains the worldís ultimate roots rock reggae outfit. No other aggregation can match them for either the depth or quality of their hit songs, or their widespread appeal. The cap still fits, and yes, the crowd still wants more.

Rap superstar LL COOL J has decided he will perform at a Jamaican reggae festival this summer - four days after event organisers announced he was cancelling his appearance.

Organisers of the 15th Annual Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay released a statement on Friday (08Jun07) stating that the Hush star - real name James Todd Smith - had pulled out of his scheduled performance, due to take place in July (07).

The rapper's management confirmed their client had cancelled the date, along with the rest of his summer tour, due to an unspecified family problem.

But LL Cool J has made a U-turn on his initial decision and will now play the Reggae Sumfest date on 20 July - although the remainder of his gigs are still cancelled.

On Wednesday, June 13, 2007, S.O.B's nightclub in Manhattan came with the hot sounds of Jamaica as "The Greatest Reggae Show On Earth" rolled into the Big Apple for the annual New York kickoff of another Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest.

Media practitioners joined sponsors and Summerfest Productions officials in marking the 15th year anniversary of the festival, which gets underway in Montego Bay, Jamaica from July 15-21, by toasting with Red Stripe beer and feasting on a spread sponsored by VP Records and catered by SOB's.

Executive Director of Summerfest Productions, Johnny Gourzong thanked guests for joining the festivities and voiced excitement that the festival is already in its 15th year. "It's stood the test of time we've earned a reputation for resilience since 1993," said Gourzong, who is especially thrilled at this year's line up that includes R&B's reigning queen, Mary J. Blige and LL Cool J, along with the return of Tigga, Beenie Man, Buju Banton, Lady Saw, Elephant Man, Shaggy, Cham, Bounty Killer, Movado, and Soca's Allison Hinds, among others.

Gourzong was joined by Jamaica's Minister Of Tourism, Entertainment & Culture, Aloun Assamba, who congratulated the Sumfest team for growing the event from "strength to strength."

Also bringing greetings was George DeMercardo, vice president of sales of Air Jamaica, who revealed that the carrier will be adding more seats in July to cater to the needs of travelers to the island for the festival. Tim Szonyi of Red Stripe/Diaego and Rich LaMotte of VP Records, also brought greetings on behalf of their brands.

Irwine Clare of the Caribbean Immigrant Services served as the evening's master of ceremonies while Counsel General of Jamaica to New York, Dr. Basil K. Bryan and Jamaican-American Councilmember, Leroy Comrie, joined in welcoming the Summerfest team to New York.

In the house were also singers Nadine Sutherland, Half Pint and David Hinds from Steel Pulse; Antigua's Minister of Tourism, Harold Lovell and several key media figures, including Dahved Levy of WBLS and MTV Tempo.

The schedule for Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest is as follows:

On Sunday July 15th, the event will get underway with a Beach Party featuring the Fab 5 band as well as popular sound systems and deejays.

Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest will continue on Thursday July 19th with Xplosion featuring a stellar line-up of the hottest reggae stars under the sun. The weekly E-Guide is a wonderful resource for those who live, love and enjoy reggae and its vibrant culture. It encompasses the music, energy and spirituality that define this unique and diverse community worldwide. You can expect CD releases and industry news, band tours, inspirational pieces, reggae trivia and of course, upcoming reggae festivals.

The Reggae Festival Guide Magazine is an annual publication which comes out in May. RBA Publishing (also home of sister publication Blues Festival Guide) prints 100,000 copies of the magazine which spotlights festivals throughout the year, feature stories on festivals around the world, radio DJ listings and stories with messages of upliftment.

For years, the Reggae Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on May 2, 2004, the webmaster of ReggaeFestivalGuide.com, Kristine Cummins partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing), and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter.

The readership is now over 10,000 reggae fans and counting. Each week, The Reggae Festival E-Guide reaches members of the Reggae community around the world. The E-Guide is currently edited by Reggae Festival Guide's Marketing Director, Justine Ketola. Click here to email Justine.
