ANA POPOVIC : : Still Mking History
Ana Popovic (pronounced: Ah'nah Pop' o vitch)- singer,songwriter and guitar virtuoso- is realizing her dreams. ELI COOK : : Miss Blues'es Child
Sledgehammer Blues is proud to announce the debut release, MISS BLUES'ES CHILD, from 21-year old blues prodigy Eli Cook.
Paying homage to traditional delta blues and heroes such as Mississippi John Hurt and Robert Johnson, the new disc features little more than Cook's impressive guitar playing and gritty vocals. Two charged with stealing Stevie Ray Vaughan memorabilia

Austin police have charged two men they say stole more than $100,000 in backstage passes, music equipment, photographs and other memorabilia of Stevie Ray Vaughan from the storage unit of the dead musician's brother.
Police said six of Vaughan's guitars still are missing, along with other items, with a combined value of several hundred thousand dollars.
Michael Shane Winders, 37, and James Matthew Malone, 29, have each been charged with theft, a second-degree felony for which they face up to 20 years in prison. Bail for Winders has been set at $100,000; Malone's bail was set at $132,000.
According to a probable cause affidavit, police officers in April were called to investigate a suspicious smell at a North Austin hotel. When they arrived, they found Malone, who was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. Police found several items they believed to be Vaughan's in the room, including movie screenplays, handwritten song lyrics, photographs of Vaughan with other musicians and two briefcases, one of which contained three guitar pick guards. The second case also had unused concert tickets, backstage passes and a guitar tuner, the affidavit says.
Police received information several days later from Jimmie Vaughan, who said that his U-Haul storage unit in Central Austin had been broken into and ransacked in February. The unit was broken into a second time in April, Jimmie Vaughan told police.
During their investigation, Austin police said they determined that Malone and Winders were trying to sell some of the material to a Dallas auctioneer. Malone introduced Winders as his "partner in the collection," according to the affidavit.

WATERFRONT BLUES FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 20TH YEAR
|
Celebrate 20 years of blues, community and fighting hunger at the 2007 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival, presented by First Tech Credit Union. The five-day festival will run Wednesday, July 4, to Sunday, July 8, 2007, on the grassy banks of the Willamette River in downtown Portland, Oregon.
Since its grass-roots beginnings in 1988, the award-winning festival has grown to be the largest blues festival west of the Mississippi and the second-largest blues festival in the nation, attracting more than 120,000 blues fans.
The festival's four stages will feature more than 125 performances by The Neville Brothers, Koko Taylor, Joan Armatrading, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Mavis Staples, Marcia Ball, Pinetop Perkins, Watermelon Slim, James Cotton Band with special guest Hubert Sumlin, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Eric Burdon and the Animals, Voice of the Wetlands Allstars (Tab Benoit, Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne, Johnny Sansone, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux), Savoy Brown, Lurrie Bell, Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums, J.J. Grey and Mofro, J.W. Jones, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks and many more.
The Festival's many special features include outdoor blues films, July 4th Fireworks, harmonica blow-off, the day-long Zydeco Swamp Romp, nine DME (Delta Music Experience) Blues Cruises on the Willamette River featuring Festival artists, workshops and interviews with Festival artists, activities for children, after-festival jam sessions�
An anomaly in the festival world, the festival is produced by and as a benefit for Oregon Food Bank. Daily admission is a donation of $8 per person per day and two cans of food. All festival proceeds benefit Oregon Food Bank's work to eliminate hunger and its root causes in Oregon and southwest Washington � because no one should be hungry.

A thief has walked off with a life-size cardboard cut-out of one Elwood Blues

The 6-ft tall fibreboard cut-out image of Elwood Blues was stolen from the foyer of Norwich (Conneticut) Playhouse.
Police have released CCTV images of the suspect and are appealing for help from members of the public to help identify the young man.
The offender was seen walking out of the foyer with the item tucked under his arm at 9.45pm on Wednesday, June 13.
The young man police would like to speak to is described as being aged between 18 and 25 and is white and of medium build and between 5ft 8in and 5ft 10in tall. He has dark brown hair and was wearing dark jeans or trousers and a white T-shirt.
Investigating officer PC Peter Newman said: �We know that a woman was standing inside the foyer at the time that the cut-out was stolen and clearly we are keen to speak to her as she is likely to have eye-witness information about this incident.
�I would encourage her to come forward and I would also ask anyone who knows the identity of the individual in this CCTV still to contact me.�

Barack Obama singing The Blues, with Dorothy Moore

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama made a brief stop at a Jackson, Mississippi, soul food restaurant last night.
He grabbed a to-go order of peach cobbler before being whisked off to a fundraising event.
About 35 people packed the black leather booths and bar stools beneath the pictures of Martin Luther King Junior and Bob Marley.
Obama spent about 15 minutes shaking hands and greeting people. At one point, the candidate belted out a few bars of the blues standard "Misty Blue" with Dorothy Moore, the Jackson singer who made the tune famous in the 1970s.
This is at least the second time in the past few years that the Illinois senator has appeared in Mississippi.

2007 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival to kick off with 20th anniversary Delta Music Expience (DME) Blues Cruise

The New York State Blues Fest has added a third stage for the 16th edition of the event, July 21 and 22.
Fest Executive Director Bernie Clarke said while revealing the second- and third-stage lineups that placing a stage in Hanover Square allowed him to schedule popular workshops again after a several-year hiatus.
Blues fans will get to hear Syracuse acoustic guitarists Mark Tolstrup and Mark Hoffmann, Berklee School of Music Hammond B-3 organ teacher Bruce Katz, rising national blues electric guitar star Sean Carney and Syracuse harmonica legend Tom Townsley explain their techniques.
Clarke said his goal was to showcase the talents of national stars, national up-and-comers and local legends in the fest.
South Beach, Miami Florida to Begin Annual Blues Music Festival Early 2008
The South Beach News newspaper today announced the creation of the South Beach Blues Festival too be held in Miami Beach, Florida in early 2008.
The informal announcement came during the annual South Beach News staff party in South Hampton, New York, which also served as a birthday party celebration for Jonah (Walter) Moriarty, publisher of the the publication.
"When Moriarty was asked where he's going after the party, half expecting him to answer by saying that he was going to Disneyland (as a joke), he replied by saying that he was headed for Memphis for some blues research and meetings with some musicians. That's when the news slipped out that a blues festival for South Beach was the next event too be created by the South Beach News."
A spokesperson for the newspaper had this to say "This is a special project for our newspaper and for Jonah, as he's been a great fan of the blues for so long, which is why the project was held back from being announced until the right moment. Thank goodness he did not give away the plans and uniqueness of how this festival will set us apart from others. I can only say that the South Beach Blues Festival will set a new standard. After all, it's being held in South Beach."

OZARK BLUES SOCIETY...
The Ozark Blues Society (Fayetteville, Arkansas) has a Blues education presentation on July 24, 2007 at the Fayetteville Public Library. The library has made the presentation an official part of their teen summer reading programming. The library has purchased Honeyboy Edwards' book "The World Don't Owe Me Nothing" and "Shout, Sister, Shout" on Rosetta Tharpe as part of their recommended reading selections. This book also ties into the section of the presentation on Arkansas' Blues Heritage. The presentation is free to students 7-12 grades and their families.
A major piece of blues memoribilia is up for grabs from the Ozark Blues Society at a special event they are holding on July 21st. A autographed Robert Lockwood Jr. guitar will be raffled. For more information on both events visit www.ozarkbluessociety.org
NORTHEAST BLUES SOCIETY...
The Northeast Blues Society�s (New York state) biggest summer blues event moves this year to Schenectady�s Central Park. On Saturday, July 7th beginning at 2 p.m. on the Music Haven stage, The New York Life Electric City Blues Festival will headline Albert Cummings fresh from opening act appearances with Buddy Guy and B. B. King in this his only area homecoming appearance of the summer. Chicago blues shouter and four-time W. C. Handy Award nominee Nora Jean Bruso also shares the stage with The Big Apple�s hottest blues rocker and surprise hit of last fall�s Lake George Blues Festival Hugh Pool. Attendees at this, the largest free area blues event of the summer, will also choose a winner from the three Colossal Contender finalists: Deep Blue Storm, The Nate Mills Band and Tas Cru & The Slow Happy Boys.
MOHAWK VALLEY BLUES SOCIETY...
Enjoy the blues, help send a kid to camp.
It's that simple, thanks to the Mohawk Valley Blues Society (New York state), which is donating a portion of its proceeds from the first Mohawk Valley Blues Festival on Saturday, June 30, to "Operation Sunshine" a charity that helps low-income children attend camp.
The Blues Society has selected a diverse lineup of artists to perform for the festival scheduled for 1 p.m. until late into the evening at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds.
The lineup represents styles ranging from the "traditional and jump blues of Sugar Ray and the Bluetones" to the "soulful vocals and fiery guitar of contemporary Chicago Blues master Carl Weathersby," according to the society's Web site, www.mvbluessociety.com.
Also appearing will be Canadian JUNO Award nominee (for best CD) Roxanne Potvin and Blues Music Award (formerly WC Handy) nominee for best new artist, Dave Gross.
Local blues performers will include Bernie Clarke & The Rhythm Sharks; Al Nathan & Bluestreak and Jimmy Wolf.
Operation Sunshine is in the midst of its 40th summer campaign, and community donations are needed to meet this year's goal of $50,000.
