TINSLEY ELLIS : : Moment of Truth

Capturing all the power and energy of Tinsley Ellis's legendary live performances, MOMENT OF TRUTH is the most guitar-driven, aggressive studio recording he has ever made. His vocals reach new heights of soulfulness and expressiveness; his guitar playing ranges from ferocious and relentless to soaring and melodic. But what really sets the album apart is the depth of Tinsley Ellis songwriting. Tinsley writes about the traditional blues subjects of love and loss, but also about addiction, recovery and the search for freedom and self-control. MOMENT OF TRUTH is his most wide-ranging and inspired recording.

Tinsley sings and plays with the energy and soul of all the great Southern musicians who have come before him. He attacks his music with rock power and blues feeling, in the same tradition as Deep South musical heroes Duane Allman, Freddie King and Warren Haynes.

PETER KARP : : Shadows and Cracks

SHADOWS AND CRACKS is the Blind Pig debut of a truly original and unique voice in American roots music. Raised in the rural trailer parks of southern Alabama and the swamps of North Jersey, Peter Karp is a master songsmith with an art for spinning genuine emotions, humor, and candor into tunes that help the listener navigate the speed bumps, traffic lights, and side streets of the road of life. By bucking the trends and taking his lyrics as seriously as his music, Peter Karp has carved a niche for himself as one of the finest contemporary Americana and blues artists around, crafting songs that are poignant, funny, irreverent, romantic and true to life.

"An underground genius...like Jackson Browne and John Prine, with a healthy dose of blues, too. Karp's a soulful storyteller. The man can write." - Blues Revue

ELVIN BISHOP : : Booty Bumpin'

A rollicking new live set from blues icon Elvin Bishop. Ever since coming of age as a bluesman on Chicago's South Side and joining up as an original member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in 1965, Elvin has always infused his music with a distinctive freshness and vitality. His reputation as an outstanding live performer comes from his ability to turn every show into a raucous party. Or, as Rolling Stone put it, a good-time romp, delivered with unflagging enthusiasm and wit. Downbeat said, Bishop is a good-hearted soul whose life mission is the entertain to the best of his ability. This CD finds him at the top of his game, delighting his audience with new tunes and old favorites.

BAR GETS CAR

On Monday morning, a banged-up 1974 Dodge Monaco sedan was lifted by a crane at the corner of Route 83 and Busse Avenue in Mount Prospect and placed inside the shell of the soon-to-be-completed Blues Bar.

The Bluesmobile used in the 1980 movie The Blues Brothers was modeled on a Mount Prospect police car. A replica will be a key feature of the new Blues Bar, currently under construction at 2 W. Busse Ave. in Mount Prospect, IL.

As for the police car, Thats going to be sitting in the restaurant on top of the stage, said Errol Oztekin, who said he plans to open the bar by the end of September.

He said the bar will have a seating capacity of 200, feature high-end food, live music, comedy acts and plenty of televisions. It will also have a separate smoking area.

Eric Clapton Guitars To Raise Funds For Rehab Facility

Eric Clapton is teaming up with guitar firm Fender to create a series of limited edition guitars and amplifiers to raise funds for his Crossroads Center rehab facility in Antigua. Only 100 Eric Clapton Crossroads Stratocaster guitars - or Sun Strats - and 50 Crossroads '57 Twin-Amps are being manufactured.

The amps come with a Clapton guitar at a cost of $30,000 a pair. The remaining 50 guitars will retail at $20,000 each when Fender starts a Clapton sale on July 20.

Former drug addict and alcoholic Clapton founded the Crossroads Center in 1997.

GUITAR CENTER SOLD FOR $1.9 BILLION

Guitar Center Inc., the largest U.S. retailer of musical instruments, agreed to be bought by Bain Capital Partners LLC for $1.9 billion.

Bain will pay $63 a share in cash, Guitar Center said today in a statement, 26 percent more than the stock's closing price yesterday. The buyout firm will also assume Guitar Center's debt, bringing the total transaction value to $2.1 billion.

Guitar Center sells Fender guitars, Pearl drums and Yamaha keyboards at more than 210 U.S. stores and online. Bain was part of a group that agreed last week to buy Home Depot Inc.'s contractor-supply unit for $10.3 billion, and has also invested in retailers Toys ``R'' Us Inc. and Michaels Stores Inc.

"They are the market leader in the musical instruments business,'' said Joan Storms, an analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities in Los Angeles "They put mom-and-pops out of business when they come into town.''

Guitar Center reported revenue gains of at least 12 percent every quarter since 1998. Sales climbed 14 percent to $2.03 billion last year, a sixfold increase since the company went public in 1997.

Guitar Center began in 1959 when former car salesman Wayne Mitchell purchased a small appliance and organ store in Hollywood, California. In 1964, Mitchell converted a movie theater next door and opened the first Guitar Center on Sunset Boulevard.

Guitar Center also operates the Hollywood RockWalk in front of its store on Sunset. The monument features cemented handprints and plaques honoring influential rock musicians such as John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix and instrument makers including Les Paul.

"RESPECT YOURSELF: THE STAX RECORDS STORY" COMING TO PBS AUGUST 1ST

Between 1959 and 1975, Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee released international chart-topping hits such as "Soul Man," "Dock of the Bay," "Green Onions," "Midnight Hour," "Respect Yourself," and the theme from SHAFT. The label's artists included Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Booker T. & the MGs, Wilson Pickett, Isaac Hayes, and even Richard Pryor and Jesse Jackson.

Founded by a white conservative bank teller who played country fiddle music, Stax became the preeminent soul music label in America, and became identified with the civil rights movement of the 1960s and '70s. RESPECT YOURSELF documents the Stax label, its visionaries, and most of all, its music.

The program premieres on August 1, 2007 (check local listings)

Jazz & Blues Legends Play On in Virtual Reality

(from PC World magazine) A University of California-Berkeley project will virtually recreate exalted Oakland, California musical hotspots like Slim Jenkins Place (pictured above), Esther's Orbit Room, and John Singer's and Harvey's Rex Club. The game angle? Compose a piece of music, then try to get it financed by Seventh Street "Mayor" Charles "Raincoat" Jones and distributed by the Sleeping Car Porters labor union.

Background: Middle century last, Oakland, California's Seventh Street was a jazz and blues gold mine, a stomping ground for national acts like Billie Holiday and B.B. King as well as sound-shaping "Oakland blues" locals like Lowell Fulson and Sugar Pie DeSanto. Never heard of Oakland blues? Let's just say some music historians mention it in the same breath as celebrated sounds like New Orleans jazz and Chicago or Kansas City blues.

Today, Seventh Street is mostly empty with a handful of shops. The street gets few visitors and the squeal and thump of 1940s and 50s jazz and blues venues has been replaced by the drone and rumble of semis and cars as they hustle toward the freeway on-ramp.

Enter UC Berkeley and a student-driven project to "recreate" an eight-block stretch of Seventh Street, replete with the clubs, music, and some of the key persons of the area's heyday. When it's finished, online visitors will be able to check out famous nightspots like Slim Jenkins' Place and Esther's Orbit Room and actually listen to digital recordings of the music played in the clubs. And the "get your composition signed and produced" mini-game mentioned earlier could be just the beginning.

Clubs like Seventh Street's salad days may be past, but with projects like UC Berkeley's, we're coming up fast on a whole new world of anywhere, anytime, any-era-you-like meets massively collaborative entertainment.

Play it again, Lowell Fulson, Saunders King, and Sugar Pie DeSanto.

Editors Note: Ronnie Stewart from the Bay Area Blues Society (San Francisco/Oakland) wrote a terrific article about "The Music They Played on 7th Street" for the 2007 Blues Festival Guide Magazine. A PDF copy of that article can be accessed by Clicking Here
