THE MATT SCHOFIELD TRIO : : Ear to the Ground

EAR TO THE GROUND is a mix of Matt Schofield's trademark blues, funk and jazz recorded live with the band in one room, and with the minimum of overdubs. To keep it fresh and spontaneous and capture the raw energy the band is known for, a "three strikes and out" rule was applied, meaning that if it didn't sound right by the third take it would not make it onto the album. One number fell by the wayside. All the rest are first or second takes. Nine original numbers are sandwiched by a pair of Kings -- opening with Freddie King's "Pack It Up" and closing with BB King's "When it All Comes Down".

Called by many the "most original and influential British Blues guitarist to have emerged since the sixties", Schofield's second studio album continues his successful organ trio of Jonny Henderson on Hammond C3 organ (and left-hand bass lines) and Evan Jenkins on drums. The huge sounding, multi-layed an rhythmically infectious delivery of this band redefines the meaning of "power trio" and is unlike anything else on the Blues Scene today.

TAB BENOIT : : Power of the Pontchartrain

Guitarist-singer Tab Benoit is the real deal. Born and raised on the Louisiana bayou, this self-proclaimed new kid from the old school has been the standard bearer for a new generation of Cajun blues musicians a traditionalist and an innovator at the same time, grafting elements of rock and soul to the indigenous sounds of the bayou. And if dedicating his life to his musical roots werent enough, Benoit has also been a tireless crusader in recent years prior to the devastation of hurricane Katrina but even more so since for the preservation of the rapidly vanishing wetlands of his native region.

Benoit unleashes his passion for his homeland and its music in POWER OF THE PONTCHARTRAIN, a new Telarc recording that he co-produced with veteran producer David Z (Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Prince). Also on board for the 11-track ride is LeRoux, the enduring Louisiana-based blues/rock/pop collective that has been a regional mainstay since the late 70s.

Enhanced CD Format Coming Soon from a Disney Record Label

Disney's Hollywood Records label, home to Los Lobos, the Indigo Girls, Hilary Duff, and Regis Philbin, is going to fight declining CD sales by offering CDs with exclusive extra content unavailable anywhere else as a lure to get fans to buy the discs.

Hollywood Records' artist roster may not be cutting edge (Regis?), but at least the label is willing to experiment with offering music fans something new -- similar to the extra features found on DVDs -- rather than just complaining about new technology and pointing fingers at their customers.

According to Reuters, the upcoming CDVU+ discs will include "digital magazine extras, song lyrics, band photos and other extras to boost fan loyalty" and the packaging will be recyclable. Some content will be exclusive:

"The content on a CDVU+ can be downloaded and accessed online and off. The label said the extra content had been produced for the new format rather than using the band's outtakes or widely available material, such as existing music videos."

Hollywood Records' SVP of marketing, Ken Bunt, said the label is using the traditional CD format to release these tracks rather than a file-based format because fans of his labels' artists are used to CDs: "We really believe if you're going to give consumers what they want, we should do it in a way they're used to."

The Jonas Brothers will become the first Hollywood artist to release an album in the CDVU+ format on August 7th.

Online Radio Is Saved; SoundExchange Will Not Enforce New Royalty Rates

Late last week at a Congressional hearing about the new rates for online radio that would essentially destroy it (as readers of this newsletter already know), SoundExchange, which was scheduled to receive the new royalty payments on Monday morning (since the enforcement date falls on a Sunday), made a startling statement.

The SoundExchange executive promised -- in front of Congress -- that SoundExchange will not enforce the new royalty rates. Webcasters will stay online, as new rates are hammered out.

The Roots Music Association spoke with Pandora founder Tim Westergren, who expressed relief that Pandora didn't have to shut down on Sunday in response to the new rates. He said, "It was getting pretty close. I always had underlying optimism that sanity was going to prevail, but I was beginning to wonder."

He said everyone who called their Congress person about this should feel that they had an effect on the process:

"This is a direct result of lobbying pressure, so if anyone thinks their call didn't matter, it did. That's why this is happening." The flyer DiMA distributed to Congress today probably helped a bit too, but overall, it appears Congress intervened due to pressure from web radio listeners.

Apparently, the per-channel minimum fees mandated by the Copyright Royalty Board were never taken very seriously by those involved. They've now been taken off the table completely, saving Pandora, Live365, and other multicasters from their most imminent threat.

"No one thought those per station fees were remotely rational. It only makes sense that they're being taken off the table."

As for the Copyright Royalty Board? They're entirely cut out of the process, having set the rates and then refused a rehearing. Going forward without the royalties being collected, SoundExchange and webcasters will negotiate a new royalty rate with Congress looking over their shoulder -- "and last but not least, the public looking over Congress's shoulder." Alternatively, Congress now has time to consider the Internet Radio Equality Act, which would set webcaster royalties at 7.5 percent of revenue and allow them to continue operating pretty much as they have been.

Either way, this is a big win for webcasters and their listeners.

'BLIND MISSISSIPPI MORRIS" to received need repairs to his home

Shelby County (Memphis, Tennessee) Commissioners came together Wednesday to try to help a Mid-South music legend.

The home of "Blind Mississippi Morris" is in disrepair, and was recently deemed unsafe by code enforcement. Things are so bad that the city of Memphis says Morris must leave his home. Morris is blind, and is incapable of making those repairs himself.

Last week Morris' plight lead to a conference room at the Shelby County building, packed with people hoping to help. Electricians, contractors, and painters were all willing to donate time, money, and equipment in an attempt to renovate the house.

The group viewed slides that outlined the repairs that need to be made, including electrical, mechanical, and aesthetic work. Contractors estimated it would cost nearly $90,000 to repair the home, an effort headed by County Commissioners Mike Carpenter and George Flinn.

Carpenter said Morris was worth it. "He is a living blues legend, and he is the type of guy that our music reputation in Memphis has been built on, so we would be taking care of one of our own.

Relatives said the music legend has a sister that he'll stay with for the time being.

If you'd like to help fix Morris' house, you can contact the Shelby County Commission.

THE NATIONAL COWBOYS OF COLOR LOVE THE BLUES....WHO KNEW?

The National Cowboys of Color Museum (NCCM) announces that tickets are now on sale for the historic Legends of the Blues concert benefiting the museum during the NCCM Labor Day weekend celebrations.

This year's concert will feature blues icons Buddy Guy, The Muddy Waters Band featuring all original members including Pinetop Perkins and James Cotton and Robert Johnson contemporary David "Honeyboy" Edwards together for one evening at Billy Bob's of Texas. The concert is set to raise funds for the NCCM and its efforts including a campaign for a new building project.

"This will be a concert that blues lovers will not want to miss," says Gloria Reed Austin, executive director of NCCM. "We're expecting a packed house to see these great legends take the stage for a concert that will not be seen again anytime soon."

The NCCM Labor Day four-day weekend will be full of special events starting with Thursday's Hall of Fame induction ceremony and ending with a special presentation by the Lone Star Regulators on Sunday.

EVERY DOG MAY HAVE IT'S DAY, BUT IKE TURNER DOESN'T

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay has turned down a request to honor Ike Turner, the legendary musician who has publicly admitted to hitting his ex-wife, entertainer Tina Turner.

Slay was asked to make Sept. 2 Ike Turner Day in St. Louis, the same day the award-winning performer is scheduled to play the Big Muddy Blues Festival at Laclede's Landing.

The request was made by Dawne Massey, the director of the music festival, who says that the mayor's office has bestowed a similar honor each year for the headline act at the concert event.

He helped put St. Louis rhythm and blues on the map, Massey said about Turner. We were only looking to celebrate his contributions to the music industry. Many entertainers have checkered pasts.

Turner, who got his start playing the nightclubs and blues bars of St. Louis and East St. Louis, is a member of the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame. He won a Grammy last year for his album, Risin' With The Blues.

In 2001, he was named to the St. Louis Walk of Fame. That same year, he published a biography in which he admitted hitting his ex-wife. The pair were split up by the late 1970s.

Massey says an aide to the mayor told her that Slay would issue the proclamation for Turner. But the aide, Cathy Smentkowski, said today that the mayor has decided against it.

When it was brought to the mayor's attention, he did not feel comfortable issuing it, Smentkowksi said.

Asked why, Smentkowski would say only that he just did not feel comfortable issuing it.

Blues club replaces troubled nightspot

Marty's Blues Cafe, a new blues cafe has opened at a former nightclub in Merriam (Kansas) that was the scene of two homicides in 2005.

The club formerly was known as Rum Runners. In response to the violence there, Merriams City Council required drinking establishments to sell their final drinks at 12:30 a.m. and close by 1 a.m. By January 2006, the nightclub had closed. The city later lifted the early closing time for its bars.

Martys Blues Cafe has been leasing space in the property since April and has been open for the past three weeks.

The owner, Martin Cohen, said he has made improvements and invited city officials and council members to tour the business.

I think we have overcome that image problem with the city. Now we just need to overcome that with our customers, he said.
