TEXAS CELEBRATES THE LEGACY OF MARCUS GARVEY
|
The Caribbean Impact Foundation, the Love Community Foundation, the Sudanese Lost Boys Foundation, and the Shrine of the Black Madonna, in collaboration with the City of Houston and the Mickey Leland Center of Texas Southern University, will host their first annual Marcus Garvey World House Festival to celebrate the legacy of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, national hero of Jamaica and the only global leader to date of Africans in the Diaspora.
Garvey was born on August 17, 1887, in the parish of St. Ann , Jamaica, and manifested genius and leadership in his teens. He migrated to the United States from where his mass movement promoting Black pride, economic empowerment and liberation from colonialism extended to over 40 countries in the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa .
Garvey’s businesses, writings and lectures positioned him to influence such leaders of African independence movements as George Padmore of Liberia , Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya , Nnamdi Azikwe of Nigeria , Julius Nyrere of Tanzania , and Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana . The parents of both Malcolm X and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. were official members of his organization. The official red, black and green colors of Garvey’s UNIA-ACL have been used to commemorate his efforts into posterity by those first leaders and others since in national flags and organization symbols worldwide.
The Houston tributes will begin on Friday, August 17 with a Reception and lecture on Garvey’s impact. On Saturday, the Marcus Garvey World House Festival will be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center featuring international and local performers, vendors of multicultural arts, crafts, fashion, food and drinks, as well as city, state and national officials. The final event on Sunday is a memorial tribute at the Shrine of the Black Madonna Pan African Orthodox Christian Church, an institution established in the fashion of the African Orthodox Church that Garvey founded. Members of the Garvey family will be in attendance at all events.
Proceeds from the festival will benefit charitable organizations and funding efforts to construct a radio station with programming from throughout the African Diaspora. Contact (832) 461-9364 or visit www.MySpace.com/garveyworldfest

Leeds Reggae Concert Celebrates 21st Anniversary
|
The annual Leeds Reggae Concert celebrates its 21st anniversary later this month (Sunday, 26 August) with one of Jamaica's biggest stars.
Freddie McGregor, whose 40 year career includes hits such as Big Ship, Push Comes To Shove, Just Don't Want To Be Lonely and I Was Born A Winner headlines the event and will perform alongside the likes of special guest 'Mister Lover-Lover' himself, Shaggy.
Born in Clarendon, Jamaica in 1956, McGregor began his career aged seven when he started singing backup for a local ska harmony duo called the Clarendonians and began to record for the legendary Studio One label.
Since then, McGregor has moved with the times, with his career spanning nearly every stylistic shift in Jamaican music, from ska and rocksteady, Rastafarian roots reggae to lovers rock and also dabbling in dancehall, ragga, and dub.
The year 2007 is a highly significant time for Leeds' black community, coinciding with the bicentenary of the Abolition of Slavery Act and the 40th year of Leeds' West Indian carnival.
Europe's biggest free reggae event will feature a number of international stars such as Mr Vegas and Wayne Wonder and supported by up-and-coming British reggae artists like Macca B, Sylvia Tella and Fluxy.
As well as the music, there will be a marquee area for children and a variety of stalls selling Caribbean food, beverages and West Indian products.
BBC 1Xtra will be broadcasting part of the event live, including performances by Freddie, Wayne Wonder and Shaggy.
Councillor John Proctor, Executive Board Member for Leisure, said: "Once again the Leeds Reggae concert has bagged some of the biggest names and continues to be the biggest, free, black music event in Europe."
Leeds Reggae Bank Holiday weekend concert takes place from 12 noon-8p.m. at Potternewton Park, Chapeltown on Sunday 26 August 2007.

Give Peace A Dance
|
The 11th annual Earthdance Festival will take place at the renowned Black Oak Ranch, a property rich in native history and old growth oak trees. The ranch is also home to many well known activists and artists, including Wavy Gravy's Camp Winarainbow for children. For 2007, Earthdance Northern California will unite with over 350 locations in 60 countries across the world to create the most conscious global festival of our time.
The Earthdance Northern California Festival will bring together an unprecedented line-up of conscious musicians, visual artists, DJ's, speakers and activists, who believe in a sustainable future for our planet. Working with the theme of "unity in diversity", the festival will host 5 music stages and will feature high profile conscious artists from many genres of the international music scene, including World, Electronica, Hip Hop, Folk and Jazz. Also included will be an indigenous elder's council, made up of indigenous elders from many nations, who will share wisdom and sacred ceremony.
An important part of the festival will be a compelling educational component called the "Activist Alley", where festival patrons can interact with both local and international non-profit groups. These organizations will share information and workshops on relevant global and local issues, inspiring local participants to take a stand for the future of our planet.
A highlight of the festival will be a synchronized global link up, taking place on Saturday the 16th, when at 4pm (PST), Earthdance California will synchronize with over 350 locations in 60 countries. At this precise moment, a specially created song called the "prayer for peace" will be played in every location at the same time. The prayer will be followed by our 2007 initiative, H2Om, the world's largest synchronized global Om.
The festival will also feature a wide variety of 'Healthy' vendors supplying many types of international foods and eco wares. Food, water, camping, and even HOT showers, are all available to festival attendees.
By uniting our diverse communities through the universal platform of music and dance, the festival will send out a strong message of peace and global sustainability. Proceeds from the festival will be donated to the Earthdance non-profit, A California based 501c3 organization.

2007 International Theme: H2Om Earthdance International, the world's largest global dance and music festival for peace, and Mystic Vibration will attempt to create the world's largest synchronized global Om, on Saturday, September 15, 2007 in a project called H2Om.
Each year, in alignment with the International Day of Peace, Earthdance International unites over 200,000 people (360 locations in 60 countries) through the universal language of dance and music to support global peace and humanitarian causes. The defining moment of the Earthdance event is the synchronized "Prayer for Peace", played at every location at the same time. The theme for the 2007 Earthdance International event is "Water", to raise awareness on the preciousness of this natural resource.
This year, the Earthdance "Prayer for Peace" will be followed by a unified global Om, as people across the world synchronize their voices with the intention of healing the Earth's waters. Participants will tune to a specific frequency (125hz), based on the Schumann Resonance, which is the consistent tone emitted by planet earth as discovered by Nasa. In addition to this frequency that will be audible on land, we intend to transmit the same frequency (via specially designed water speakers) to the waters of several major sacred rivers throughout the world (Amazon, Ganga, Nile etc.). This gesture will be an attempt to "homeopathically resonate" the Earth's water body with our global intention, and thus unite all life, both on land and sea.
The International Gathering of Elders 2007 An important part of this year's festival is the "International Elders Forum" featuring first nation and modern elders from many countries. The elders will share wisdom and sacred ceremony and will join in council to discuss the important issues that are facing our planet at this crucial time. Earthdance Laytonville is honored to host this important gathering.
