GOING HOME AFTER HURRICANE DEAN: THE AMERICAN FRIENDS OF JAMAICA CREATES “A THOUSAND ROOFS OF LOVE”
|
Friends Rebuild Homes for Friends Affected by Hurricane Dean
In the wake of Hurricane Dean, which made landfall in Jamaica on Sunday, August 19, 2007, The American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Jamaican charitable and social initiatives, responds to the needs of Jamaican citizens with the A Thousand Roofs of Love in partnership with Missionaries of the Poor, led by Father Richard Ho Lung. The roof project initiated by Ambassadors Sue and Chuck Cobb has gained the support of United States Ambassador to Jamaica, Brenda Johnson and husband J. Howard Johnson along with AFJ President Ambassador Glen and Gloria Holden, each personally pledging $20,000 USD to support roof rebuilding and repairing of 1,000 homes.
Many children and families in southern parishes remain in shelters since they have lost homes and personal belongings due to the significant flooding and storm surges dumped by the Category 4 hurricane. “The American Friends of Jamaica sends our sympathy for our friends, brothers and sisters in Jamaica,” commented Ambassador Glen Holden, AFJ President. “We are responding by providing materials to many individuals who had damage to their roof. Our goal is to reach 1000 homes and we have raised almost 40% of that goal at this time (August 23rd).”
Father Ho Lung adds, ‘It is building a beautiful sense of care and hope”. Since the Hurricane hit, the Missionaries of the Poor have been engaged in providing immediately needed packages of food as well as setting up soup kitchens for many without food.
Amb. Sue Cobb further explains, “The 1000 Roofs Project will bring tremendous comfort to these suffering communities. This is a tremendous task and the Missionaries of the Poor deserve all the help we can give them in their remarkable and selfless service for the welfare of those less fortunate than themselves.”
An assessment revealed there is tremendous need for roofing material to repair the damage. The goal is to provide materials for 1,000 homes at $250 USD per home, ($200 for materials and $50 for food). Amb. Holden continues, “A contribution of $250 USD will provide basic food and shelter for families who are in desperate need of a helping hand. Let’s work together and start rebuilding homes with love.”
Each dwelling will be provided with four pieces of zinc and four pieces of plywood. With an additional pledge from the Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove, Florida and others, the Roof Fund currently totals over US $80,000. The support of individuals and organizations willing and able to participate in this 1000 Roofs Project will help achieve the set target of $250,000 USD.
All contributions are tax-deductible. For more information or to make a contribution, please use one of the following methods:

Half Pint Picks Up Honor In Hartford
|
Veteran singer Lindon 'Half Pint' Roberts was honored by the City of Hartford, Connecticut for his contribution to promoting Jamaican music and culture abroad. A proclamation and celebration of his achievements was initiated.
The proclamation reads: "Whereas Lindon Roberts, affectionately known as Half Pint, first began singing in the school choir at All Saints Primary School in Jamaica, West Indies, he later toured the island with various groups, namely Black Scorpio, Jammys, Gemini, Lee's Unlimited and Killamanjaro."
According to the proclamation, Eddie Perez mayor of Hartford, declared August 11th to be Lindon 'Half Pint' Roberts Day and urged that, "residents acknowledge and celebrate the important contributions made by Mr Roberts and join in wishing him all God's blessing".
Half Pint's reaction to the honor was to state, "I'm glad that my work is really reaching across and is recognised by the state, the governor and the mayor of Hartford, enough so that they would issue a proclamation honouring me in the city."
"My music is for healing the people of the world, word, sound, and power is where it really begins. I have to spread the message. Reggae is a great music and it is heard all over the world," he said, adding that he wished that Jamaica would honour his work in a similar way.
Loyal Haylett, Half Pint's manager, shared the same opinion. "We must recognise the fact that he is an ambassador for reggae music, he is a humble human being and he works very hard, his music deals with equality and justice for mankind. The world appreciates his music and so one can understand why the city of Hartford would honour him," he said.

ETHIOPIA CELEBRATES MILLENIUM
|
An estimated 400,000 people including 35,000 Rastafarians are set to celebrate the Ethiopian Millenium on September 12, 2007 in Shashemane, the home of the Rasta community and the capital Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Celebrations are taking place in cities throughout the world. A multi-million dollar concert facility has been built to stage the main event in the Ethiopian capital. Artists expected to perform at the celebrations in Addis include Julian Marley, Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas and many more. A series of galas, parades, prayer services and other cultural events will kick off a year long celebration.
Reggae Festival Guide sends a Happy New Year greeting to all Ethiopians, Rastafarians and tourists celebrating the millenium.
ABOUT THE ETHIOPIAN CALENDAR:
The calendars of the entire world are based on the work of the old Egyptian astronomers who discovered - as early as three to four thousand years BC - that the solar or sidereal year lasted slightly less than 365 ¼ days. However, it was left to the astronomers of the Alexandrian school to incorporate this knowledge into some sort of calendar; and it was these astronomers who also came up with the idea of leap years.
Subsequently, the Romans under Julius Caesar borrowed their reformed calendar from the Alexandrian science and adopted it to the western world. Then the Copts inherited this science as a right and built upon it themselves. In due course, the Copts handed this calendar, together with their method of computing the date of Easter, on to their descendant Church in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian year therefore has something in common with the western year, having been derived from the same source.
So much so that the Ethiopian calendar retains the old Egyptian system whereby the year was divided into twelve months of thirty days each plus one additional month of five days (six days in leap years). Ethiopian dates therefore, fall 7- 8 years behind western dates and have done so since early Christian times. This discrepancy results from differences between the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church as to the date of the creation of the world.
Each Ethiopian year is dedicated to one of the four Evangelists according to the cycle: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The year of St. Luke is Leap Year, and therefore always has six days in the thirteenth month of the Ethiopian calendar. (information from www.ethiopianmillenium.com)
