MARLEY RINGTONES SET OFF FIRESTORM

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the album "Exodus," Verizon announced on August 28th it would make available Bob Marley and the Wailers ringtones. The list of 28 possible tracks included such hits as "Could You Be Loved," "Buffalo Soldier," as well as recording history's most famous musical confession.

Not long after that announcement, Fifty Six Hope Road Music Ltd. charged that the contract signed by Universal Music Group with Verizon had been struck without the consent of the Marley Family, and was therefore in violation of a long-standing contract between the artist and the record label.

The Marley estate threatened to sue for trademark infringement, and the songs in question were promptly removed. Fifty Six then issued a statement saying that a concession was reached with the telecommunications company.

A few days later, Verizon put the songs back up for download, saying it has already been established that according to the contract, Marley's music was acceptable to be availed for download. His likeness and music were never intended to be an overall endorsement of the carrier.

"Exodus" has gone platinum no less than ten times, and Verizon's Web site presently has 44 Bob Marley tracks available for download.

CAPLETON TO HEADLINE THIRD ANNUAL REGGAE CULTURE SALUTE

Limited supplies of $35 early bird tickets are now available for the 3rd annual Reggae Culture Salute which takes place on Sunday, November 4th at Webster Hall 125 E. 11th Street in New York City. The event which boasts the power andintensity of roots rock reggae will bring together Capleton, the prophet, Anthony B, the original fireman, and Etana, the strong one
for a celebration of the 77th anniversary of the coronation of His
Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I and Queen Mennen ofEthiopia.

The 2005 inaugural staging of Reggae Culture Salute received rave reviews and New York's stamp of approval when thousands packed the world famous Roxy to celebrate the regal remembrance. In a preview of Reggae Culture Salute 2006, Ben Sisario of the New York Times wrote "The big reggae concert this fall should be relatively free of the controversy that has dogged so many other recent reggae shows: homophobia," calling Reggae Culture Salute a "celebration of reggae's old-fashioned family values."Reggae Culture Salute also celebrates the unique relationship between reggae, rasta, Selassie and Jamaica.

Reggae Culture Salute is a project of the Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music (CPR) and in keeping with its mandate to raise the bar in the production, marketing and promotion of reggae, a portion of the proceeds will be earmarked to support studies by a deserving student
at the Jamaica School of Music or the reggae studies program at the University of the West Indies will be launched at Reggae Culture Salute 2007.

Early bird tickets are available at www.ticketweb.com or at local ticket outlets until September 30th. For more information visit: www.tsoproductions.com

HERO'S SPLASH IN ST. ANN, JAMAICA

The Garden parish of St Ann is set to come alive with the inaugural staging of Heroes Reggae Splash at the Richmond Estate in the parish next month.

The festival, which is being promoted by Richmond Estate Management Group, will not only feature popular music but also a blend of traditional Jamaican cultural and art forms and will be staged over the Heroes weekend, October 13-15. The sprawling 400-acre property will see four concerts over the three days, with special tributes being paid to cultural icon and National Hero Marcus Garvey, reggae royalty Peter Tosh, the Maroons and the Jamaican/Chinese.

The festival is being held under the theme 'Celebrating our heroes past and present'.

The promoters have also promised to mount exhibits of Garvey, Tosh and the chosen ancestor groups in a museum, and show documentaries and movies in a cinema inside the Richmond Estate.

According to executive producer Charles Campbell, Heroes Reggae Splash will offer more than the run-of-the-mill reggae festival.

"Heroes Reggae Splash is not just a reggae concert or reggae festival," Campbell told Splash. "It is a festival of the arts and culture. It will highlight the main Jamaican cultural elements which influence and inform reggae music, be it intuitive art, local cuisine, our penchant for storytelling, dance or the traditional music forms like dinki mini or nyahbinghi."

The festival is aimed at providing wholesome family entertainment and special efforts are being made to ensure that children under 12 receive their share of enjoyment and be educated about Jamaica's rich cultural heritage.

A fun village, featuring rides, attractions and traditional games, including basket bowl and gig spinning, will be opened during the daytime hours to ensure the young ones have fun.

The organisers have also indicated that a culture village, where dominoes, kite-making exhibitions, kumina, jonkunnu and maypole performances as well as a mento band will be on offer.

Reggae stars Sizzla Kolonji, Richie Spice, veteran Leroy Sibbles, Bushman, Tarrus Riley, Queen Ifrika, Half Pint, Andrew Tosh and Rootz Underground are some of the artistes who have already been booked for the event, which will see performances on two stages so as to prevent time lapses between band changes, an annoying feature of local reggae festivals.

Richmond Estate Management has also booked dancehall veterans Brigadier Jerry, Charlie Chaplin and Josie Wales to perform in a three the hard way. The comedic Professor Nuts and General Trees will also be trading lyrics at the festival.

There will also be performances of folk songs, dance and drumming as well as stints by local stand-up comedians, dub poetry and storytelling by Amina Blackwood-Meeks.

The festival ends on Heroes Day with a concert followed by a dance party featuring Bass Odyssey sound system.
