"El Cid" Founder Clark Allen Passes in Los Angeles

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on February 14, 1925, Clark Allen died of respiratory failure at the age of 82 in Los Angeles on January 20th. A musician and musicologist, an artist, sculptor, model-maker, and nautical historian, an actor, linguist, and world traveler, Clark was endlessly creative, a larger-than-life figure who will be greatly missed. He and his former wife and lifelong friend, actress and dancer Margarita Cordova, lived and studied in Granada, Spain, for more than a year, before returning to Los Angeles, where they founded and entertained at El Cid, the renowned flamenco club, for more than 18 years. In 1972, Clark was shot during a robbery at El Cid, and his survival, after more than a year in the hospital, amazed his doctors. The late Vincent Price began collecting his paintings in the 60s, even as Clark toured with Carl Sandburg and Bette Davis in “The World of Carl Sandburg,” as well as appearing in Marlon Brando’s “One Eyed Jacks” and several episodes of “The Twilight Zone” and “Peter Gunn.” Clark continued to perform locally until recently, singing folk songs in several languages and then doing pencil and charcoal sketches of people in his audience. Clark is survived by his sister, Janet Martin, of Prescott Arizona. His daughter Angela, an artist, and son David, a musician, as well as his two grandsons, live in London, England. A private family memorial will be held this weekend.

SON DE LA FRONTERA in Carmel, San Francisco, AND LOS ANGELES!!!

The Bay Area Flamenco Partnership presents
SON DE LA FRONTERA
Direct from Spain

"A Centennial Tribute to Diego del Gastor"
with Special Guest Artist Juan del Gastor

Son de la Frontera is one of Spain's most highly acclaimed flamenco ensembles. Nominated for the 2008 BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards, they are inmersed in an innovative exploration of the cross-pollination of Iberian, North African and Gypsy traditions as well as flamenco's assimilation of New World influences from Latin America and the Caribbean. The group's founder, Raul Rodriguez, plays the Cuban tres (which is like a small guitar, with three sets of double strings), an instrument he discovered after his mother, the vocalist Martirio, was given one after performing in Cuba with Compay Segundo, lead singer of the Buena Vista Social Club. Lead dancer Pepe Torres is a polyrhythmic powerhouse who's superb footwork provides the band's main percussive support. Both of their best-selling CDs ('Son de la Frontera' 2006 World Village and 'Cal' 2007 World Village) have made top spots on critics' picks lists around the globe and a Latin Grammy nomination for 2007.

DOMINGO ORTEGA FLAMENCO DANCE WORKSHOP

4 LOCATIONS -- MARCH 2008:
Portland, Oregon -- March 11-15
San Diego, CA -- March 17-18
Los Angeles, CA -- March 19-20
Long Beach, CA -- March 21-22

World-class Flamenco dancer Domingo Ortega has been heralded by critics as a 'startling personal update of flamenco style.' On the cutting edge of new trends in flamenco, Domingo Ortega stretches the boundaries of traditional form to produce exciting new variations.

Domingo Ortega will be on a four city workshop tour this March. For those of you who attended his workshop last year, I'm sure you'll remember how much fun it was, how terribly wonderful his choreography is, and, what an encouraging teacher he is to work with.

You can sign up for just the Advanced Beginning/Intermediate class, just the Advanced class, or both. I encourage everyone to take both classes if you can afford it (the Euro isn't helping us this year!). Advanced students will enjoy the Intermediate level. Kristina Cobarrubia writes, "I've performed and used last year's tientos and pieces of the solea por bulerias." Intermediate students will benefit from the Advanced level by introducing their ear and body to new rhythms.

If you're not sure who Domingo Ortega is, check out this website: http://www.domingoflamenco.com
And, you can see Domingo teaching last year's workshop class on my YouTube site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubgNfqzwE1I

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER:
Gilles Larrain went on a two-week trip to Andalusia in 1983 to photograph flamenco for GEO magazine. He ended up staying for two months in the attic of La Carboneria a flamenco venue in Sevilla as guest to the owner, Paco Lira, a kind of godfather to the flamenco world. The photos of "Flamenco: Landscapes of its Soul" are the result of Gilles' endless nights at the Carboneria and his trips with Paco to the homes of some of flamenco's legendary families. Others were taken at Gilles' SOHO studio where he continues to photograph flamenco artists that come to New York. Gilles' one-of-a-kind gelatin silver prints document major contemporary flamenco artists off stage in intimate settings. His photos capture the privileged studio moment and explore the visual aesthetics of flamenco that reflect the austere beauty of the Andalusian landscape.

Over the years Gilles has photographed many legends from our flamenco community. In the coming months we will be presenting an ongoing series of photographs from Mr. Larrain's "Flamenco" series. I am honored to be able to present extraordinary work from this highly regarded series.
