FROM CHEF MAYRA - YOU ARE WHAT YOU DON’T EAT
|
Ten ways to label you and your food
OK, vegetarians don’t eat animals, including fish. But that’s only the beginning. There’s a whole other world out there of selective eaters who abstain from this or that because of health, politics, or neuroses. To guide you through the nomenclature of culinary identity, we’ve defined some terms, coined others, and generally split the world into 10 kinds of eaters. And that doesn’t even include the omnivores with a conscience (whom perhaps we’ll call Pollanarians, after Michael Pollan, the patron saint of humane eating). 1. Vegan. A vegan won’t put anything that comes from an animal into his or her mouth, including dairy products and eggs. Though originally associated with hippie culture, veganism garnered much-needed hipster cred with the rise of the straight edge scene (punks who don’t drink or do drugs) in the early 1980s.. 2. Macrobiotic. An ancient Eastern way of eating, macrobiotics today is specifically tailored to each individual, though the basics remain the same: locally grown organic food with meat-free preparation and lots of whole grains as the base. Unlike in vegetarianism, seafood’s permitted, though tomatoes, honey, and eggplant are not. The diet was once thought to cure certain forms of cancer, though there are stories of it exacerbating health problems. 3. Localvore or Locavore. People who make it a practice to consume exclusively local produce and products claim that the ingredients in an average American meal have to travel 1,500 miles to get to one’s mouth. In to-may-to, to-mah-to fashion, some call themselves localvores while others have adopted locavore. The resurgence of farmers’ markets, the inherent environmental benefits, and the fact that it supports local economies have strengthened the philosophy’s appeal. This is all well and good for people living in California, but how’s the local produce in Alaska?

JUNIOR MARVIN : : WAILIN FOR LOVE
CLICK 'LISTEN' BUTTON BELOW TO HEAR: 'LIFE WITHOUT YOU'
REGGAE’S MOST PROLIFIC GUITARIST WAILS LOUD ON NEW RELEASE
Junior Marvin-Hanson, former lead-guitarist for Bob Marley, has a new album, "Wailin’ For Love," set for release in July, 2007. Junior was a key participant in Time Magazine’s “Album of the Century;” 1977’s seminal Bob Marley and the Wailers release, EXODUS.
Since 1981, Marvin-Hanson has fronted the legendary Wailers Band, contributed to projects with indie-rock luminaries, OAR, performed on Saturday Night Live with Lenny Kravitz and served a celebrated stint as host of XM Radio’s “The Joint.”
"Wailin’ For Love" contains 18 tracks of shimmering reggae and funk-pop-rock gold.
Acclaimed reggae historian Roger Steffens proclaims “Junior Marvin-Hanson supplied the drive and irresistible energy to Bob Marley’s stadium- conquering live performances. His long awaited solo album reveals the power and personality that Bob Marley so admired.”
After stints playing with Ike & Tina Turner and Steve Winwood, Junior joined Bob Marley in 1977. Upon becoming a member of The Wailers, Junior was paid a visit by Eric Clapton, who proceeded to give him his own Explorer guitar (the very one he used while a member of Cream). It was with this special guitar that Junior created the most identifiable and celebrated pieces of musicianship in the history of reggae music.

NATAN REGGAE : : EN BICICLETA Y SIN RIFLE
CLICK 'LISTEN' BUTTON BELOW TO HEAR: 'RUNNING IN MY BLOOD'
NATAN REGGAE is the synergy of five members of this planet in a quest to enlighten silence.
Their music has a strong Roots influence, although it flirts with other jamaican styles (such as dub, lover´s rock or ska) mixed up with its members own musical background going from rock and funk to jazz and latin. Their shows, more than a hundred so far, are an eclectic and versatile trip, powerful and energetic in some parts and smooth and easy in others. They released their second album "En bicicleta y sin rifle" in 2008.

TIBET: THE PRESSURE IS RISING - SUPPORT THE DALAI LAMA- SIGN THE PETITION TODAY!
The global outcry over Tibet is rising fast - In just 5 days, 751,472 of us from 192 countries have come together to call on China for restraint and to dialogue with the Dalai Lama. Even more amazing, we have told over 5 million of our friends about this important campaign - that's 1 million people per day!
A personal email from a friend is a powerful thing – it is helping to drive the global tide of concern. Let's push now to tell 5 million more friends, get over 1 million signatures this week, and deliver the largest global online petition in history to the Chinese government. Just forward the email below to a few more friends and family with a personal note from you…
------------------
Dear Friends,
After decades of repression, the Tibetan people are crying out to the world for change. The spotlight of the upcoming Olympic Games is now on China, and Tibetan Nobel peace prize winner the Dalai Lama is calling to end all riots and violence through restraint and dialogue--he urgently needs the support of the world's people.
China's hardliners are lashing out publicly at the Dalai Lama--but we're told that President Hu Jintao may believe dialogue is the best hope for stability in Tibet. China's leadership is right now considering a crucial choice between repression and dialogue that could determine Tibet's--and China's--future.
We can affect this historic choice – for President Hu, China's global reputation matters. He needs to hear from us that the 'Made in China' brand and the upcoming Olympics in Beijing will succeed only if he chooses dialogue over the hardliners' repression. An avalanche of global people power is moving to get his attention. We're closing on our goal of 1 million signatures and the largest global online petition in history - click below to join the global outcry, and then forward this email to friends and family right away:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/tibet_end_the_violence/51.php?cl=66000385
China's economy is dependent on "Made in China" exports that we all buy, and the government is keen to make the Olympics in Beijing this summer a celebration of a new and respected China. China is also a sprawling, diverse country with much brutality in its past, so it has good reasons to be concerned about stability -- some of Tibet's rioters killed innocent people. But President Hu must recognize that the greatest danger to Chinese stability and development today comes from hardliners who advocate escalating repression, not from those Tibetans seeking dialogue and reform.
We will deliver our petition directly to Chinese officials in New York, London and Beijing, but it we must reach our goal of 1 million signatures first. Please forward this email to your address book with a note explaining to your friends why this is important, or use our tell-a-friend tool to email your address book--it will come up after you sign.
The Tibetan people have suffered quietly for decades. It is finally their moment to speak--we must help them be heard.
With hope and respect, Ricken, Pascal, Graziela, Iain, Paul, Galit, Milena, Ben and our whole team
