Mac Arnold & Plate Full of Blues : : Backbone & Gristle

Mac Arnold must have known at an early age that his music career would read like a "Who's who" of Blues/R&B legends. His high school band "J. Floyd& the Shamrocks" were often joined by none other than Macon, Georgia native, James Brown on piano. After deciding to pursue a professional music career, he joined the Charles Miller group until 1965 when he made the move to Chicago to work with recording artist/saxophonist A. C. Reed.

In late 1966, at age 24, came the opportunity of a lifetime to join the Muddy Waters Band and help shape the electric blues sound that inspired the rock and roll movement of the late 60's and early 70's. Regular guests of the band included Eric Clapton, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop. The Muddy Waters Band (as a unit) shared the stage with the likes of Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, Junior Wells, Big Joe Williams, and Big Mama Thornton ("Hound Dog") just to name a few. During this time, Mac played on John Lee Hooker's "live" album, Live at the Café Au Go-Go, as well as Otis Spann's classic recording "The Blues Is Where It's At", which is still rated a five star CD today.

Mac now resides in Pelzer, SC, where at age ten he got his first taste of the blues when he learned to play his brother Leroy's home-made guitar. Going back to his roots, Mac is serving up a mess of Blues with his own band, "MAC ARNOLD & PLATE FULL O' BLUES". The band consists of Mark McMakin on bass and vocals; Austin Brashier on guitar and vocals; Max Hightower on keyboards, harmonica and guitar; and Mike Whitt on drums. In the same way Mac shared the stage with some of the most influential Blues/R & B legends of his day, these guys will be fortunate to be in a band with one of the original masters of blues, Mr. Mac Arnold. Bring your appetite and get ready to "Pig Out" on a Plate Full O' Blues!

Backbone & Gristle's 15 tracks are all written and arranged by the band. The title is a synonym for fortitude and character which Mac's sharecropper father used to motivate the kids.

Josh Boyd & The VIP Band : : Josh Boyd & The VIP Band
Josh Boyd, the front man of the VIP Band, has been thrilling crowds regularly in and around the Toledo, Ohio- area and has been featured at Buddy Guy’s Legends and Kingston Mines in Chicago and at musical festivals in Ohio, Michigan and Canada. In addition to regular appearances at clubs, festivals and fairs, Josh has opened up for renowned artists Edgar and Johnny Winter, Rick Derringer, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Kansas, Dave Mason, Canned Heat and Charlie Daniels.

Josh was only a mere 3 years old when he picked up the guitar for the first time and over the years his artistry has matured through the influences of performers including Johnny “Guitar” Watson, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Albert Collins. But don’t be confused, this is no copycat gunslinger. His playing is pure Boyd, a style all his own. Once you see him you’ll ask yourself, “Where has this guy been hiding?” This is one band you don’t want to miss. From down-home blues to superfunky dance tunes. He plays the music his way 100% of the time. The band features the driving, blood pumping drum work of Charles Gaston and Junior Springs holds the sound together with his peerless machine gun bass work. The VIP Band has a formidable stage presence. They deliver excitement and always leave the crowd breathless for more. This little package is as powerful as dynamite!

Billy Gibson : : The Prince Of Beale Street
Billy Gibson first picked up the harmonica at a very young age. “It was cheap and I could easily make sounds with it.” After high school, Gibson’s desire for learning and improving as a musician took him to Clarksdale, Mississippi, where he played with blues guitarist Johnnie Billington and drummer Bobby Little in Billington’s group The Midnighters. “Johnnie and Bobby taught me how to make it in this business,” Gibson recalls.

Like many before him, Gibson eventually left Mississippi for Memphis. “Beale Street was my university of blues,” recalls Gibson, referring to the lessons learned as a Beale Street performer. “For a young musician, all you have to do is look and listen and you can learn so much.”

Gibson’s talent and commitment have not gone unrecognized. He received an endorsement from Hohner, his harmonica of choice in 1999. He has made guest appearances on national recording artists’ CDs including Deborah Coleman’s Soft Place To Fall (Blind Pig 2000) and Michael Burks’ I Smell Smoke (Alligator 2003). Around the same time, Gibson received a BA in music from the University of Memphis.

Gibson’s career has been a constant progression and immersion into many genres of music, with blues being the foundation and primary inspiration of his artistic endeavors. This DVD captures Billy Gibson, affectinately known as "The Prince of Beale," and his band during their first summer tour at the 2007 North Atlantic Blues Festival in Rockland, Maine. A true ambassador of Memphis music, Gibson puts on a once in a lifetime perforamance for some of the greatest blues fans in the world.

Jeff Healey’s musical friends pay tribute in two celebrations

Ian Gillan, Jack Bruce, Randy Bachman, Colin James, David Wilcox among 30 artists to take part in Toronto concerts

Jeff Healey’s contributions to the worlds of rock, blues and jazz will be celebrated in two Toronto concerts on May 3 and 4.

The first concert will be held at the Sound Academy (formerly The Docks) on Saturday May 3, and will include performances from former Cream vocalist and bass player Jack Bruce, Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan, Randy Bachman, Colin James, David Wilcox, Greg Godovitz, Alannah Myles, and Matt Minglewood, among many others.

Jeff Healey’s Jazz Wizards will open the show, while Jeff Healey’s Blues Band, the four-piece group which played with Healey both at the Toronto club that carries his name and on numerous international tours, will support the wide array of guest artists.

The second event, which celebrates Healey’s parallel career in the classic jazz world, will be held Sunday May 4 at Jeff Healey’s Roadhouse. Seven bands — and several of Healey’s special friends from the United States — are among the musical guests, including Marty Grosz, Brad Kay and Vince Giordano.

Cristie Healey, Jeff’s wife, who has helped organize the two shows, said she was touched by the way so many members of the musical community, both in Toronto and internationally, had shown such enthusiasm and support for the upcoming events.

Funds raised at both concerts will be donated to the Daisy’s Eye Cancer Fund and to The Healey Family Trust.  Tickets for both events can be purchase at http://www.ticketbreak.com/categories/music

Starbucks Hands Record Biz To Concord

Starbucks has withdrawn from the music business and handed its record label Hear Music to the Concord Music Group.

Starbucks has withdrawn from the music business and handed its record label Hear Music to the Concord Music Group.

The coffee chain made an aggressive move into music when it launched the Hear Music label a year ago. Hear Music gave heritage artists who are no longer played on radio an alternative outlet to promote their releases.

The first artist to release on Hear Music was Paul McCartney with the 'Memory Almost Full' album.

Since then, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon have followed suit and released on Hear Music.

Starbucks started into the music business when it released Ray Charles 'Genius Loves Company' album with Concord Records.

The company share-price has been on a downward slide for the past year. It has dropped from $32.30 a share a year ago to $15.39 this week.

Starbucks withdrew from the music business so that the company could concentrate on core business.

ASCAP Launches Bill Of Rights For Songwriters / Composers

To remind the public, members of the music industry and U.S. legislators of the central role and rights of those who conceive and create music, ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) today officially launched a 'Bill of Rights for Songwriters and Composers.'

This awareness-building initiative centers around 10 core principles, including "We have the right to be compensated for the use of our creative works, and share in the revenues that they generate" and "We have the right to license our works and control the ways in which they are used." (See full text of the Bill below and at www.ascap.com/rights/billText.aspx)

These rights, all of which are already inherent in the act of music creation and protected by U.S. copyright law, are increasingly under threat as competing interests argue over the future of the business of music - and as growing numbers of individuals bypass payment altogether to illegally share music online.

Developed by ASCAP to support and empower all those who create music, the 'Bill of Rights for Songwriters and Composers' debuted during ASCAP "I Create Music" Week at the 25th Annual Pop Music Awards held on April 9 and was also introduced to attendees of the third annual ASCAP "I Create Music" EXPO (April 10-12). In just a few days, more than 500 signatures were collected including: Lionel Richie, Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson, Justin Timberlake, Desmond Child, Jackson Browne, Steve Miller, Marilyn Bergman, Alan Bergman, Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Chamillionaire, Keri Hilson, Johnta Austin and John Rzeznik.

These 500-plus signatures served as the kick-off to a grassroots campaign that, over the next few months, will collect signatures and support from both established and aspiring songwriters, lyricists and composers from all genres of musical compositions.  Those who wish to add their support to the Bill can sign it electronically at www.ascap.com/rights.

As part of this initiative, ASCAP also wrote a perspective piece on the relevance and importance of music copyright protection, titled "Music Copyright in the Digital Age: A Position Paper" which may be viewed and downloaded from www.ascap.com/rights/billText.aspx

MUSIC UNITED RADIO CONFERENCE & MUSIC FESTIVAL - POSTPONED

The directors for the Roots Music Association (RMA) have annouced that the venue and date for Music United ‘08 Radio Conference and Music Festival has been changed.

They had been planning for months to hold the event at the Shrine Convention Center in San Antonio. Excitement about the event in the music and radio communities was reaching very high levels, and they were (and still are) receiving hundreds of inquiries from performers and other possible attendees from all over the world.

However, due to recent developments these plans are no longer feasible and they plan to reschedule the event for later this year at another location close to San Antonio.

All of the bands that applied for showcases are still submitted for the new date and venue. If you have already received confirmation to perform you will be first considered for the new date and time. All monies submitted to the RMA for registration will be applied to the new Conference date, or will be refunded upon request.

The board of directors of the Roots Music Association regrets having to reschedule the event, and they particularly regret any inconvenience to our members, performers, radio industry folks, and the many others who responded positively to the event. We will do everything in our power to bring this wonderful event concept to life later this year, and we hope you will continue your support of our organization.

If you want more information about why they have to reschedule the event, click here.

Blues Brothers Bridge Jump in Google Earth

The Blues Brothers taught us many things — always pay your taxes, always help out those you love even if it means fighting some neo-Nazis, never date a woman who owns a bazooka — but the main lesson many of us took from the film was that retired cop cars have great engines. Hence, the bridge-jumping, loudspeaker-toting 1974 Dodge Monaco better known as the Bluesmobile. It’s a car so beloved that it’s showing up in the most unlikely of places.

For example, a digital replica of the Bluesmobile can be found in Google Earth jumping the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge between New Jersey and Pennsylvania in much the same fashion as the real Bluesmobile lept Chicago’s East 95th Street Bridge in the movie. Just another inevitable and hilarious effect of open sourcing your 3D building sketch-ups, Google. Newsflash: Computer nerds are often movie nerds too.

Many people are creating 3D models of buildings, bridges, dams and other structures around the world and uploading them to the Google 3D Warehouse. Many of the better quality buildings end up getting included in the Google Earth 3D Buildings layer. As with most creative processes, sometimes modelers get a little carried away and sometimes include a little easter egg.

BLUESMOBILE FROM LEGOS
You can also construct a very reasonable facsimile of said Bluesmobile made out of LEGO blocks. Extra points for dirtying up the component blocks to give it that signature funktified Blues Brothers feel.

For years, the Blues Festival Guide Magazine received numerous requests for updates on festivals via email, and on January 10, 2006, the Marketing Director of the Blues Festival Guide magazine, Nancy Edwards partnered with the magazine (RBA Publishing) and published the first emailed issue of the E-Guide E-Newsletter.

The E-Guide is a wonderful resource for everyone interested in Blues! You can expect to see the E-Guide in your inbox weekly. Please email the editor with any questions at
