DOCTOR DREAD LAUNCHES MYREGGAE.COM - STATE OF THE ART WEBSITE FOR ALL THINGS REGGAE
Doctor Dread first discovered reggae music in 1973 after listening to Bob Marley’s "Catch A Fire" and the "Harder They Come" soundtrack. After frequent trips to Jamaica, his love for reggae was cemented. Inspired by the people he met and the powerful roots of Jamaican culture, he resolved to bring Jamaican music to the world. Back in the States, he established a reputation as a DJ at WHFS, a major Washington DC radio station, where he earned the ‘Doctor Dread’ moniker, and where the songs of reggae greats like Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff and many lesser known artists first reached the airwaves.

He founded RAS Records in 1980 and the label eventually grew to include a who’s who roster of reggae artists, with Black Uhuru, Bunny Wailer, Gregory Isaacs, Inner Circle and Israel Vibration all releasing landmark albums. He recently launched another label, Tafari Records, which has released new material from Israel Vibration, Kenyatta “Culture” Hill and Bunny Wailer, amongst others.

Doctor Dread has now launched myreggae.com, an exciting and comprehensive new website for reggae artists and enthusiasts alike.

Both an all-encompassing online store and a social networking community, myreggae.com offers a combination of merchandise and interactive space, from a comprehensive selection of CDs, digital downloads, vinyl, books and t-shirts to discussions, blogs and profiles. The site will also function as a platform for reggae artists to connect with a worldwide fan base, allowing artists to upload and share their own music and information on the site.

Perhaps most exciting to reggae fans will be the exclusive content offered for download on the site. Doctor Dread has built up a considerable list of connections over his twenty-five years in the business and plans to put these contacts to good use, offering studio tracks and remixes formulated especially for myreggae.com.

Each subsequent visit to the site will yield something new—new exclusive content, new releases, new discussions and a constantly expanding network of reggae artists and enthusiasts.

CHEF MAYRA: OILS - DIFFERENT TYPES FOR DIFFERENT USES
There are 4 different types of oils or fat.
Monounstaurated fat - olive or canola oil
Polyunstaurated fat - sunflower or soybean oil
Saturated fat - butter, coconut, or palm oil
Trans-fat - hydrogenated fat used in cookies and commercial French fries.

Olive Oil - The Best of the Bunch
Olive oil is a wonderful source of omega-3 fatty acid. It belongs to a class of fat called monounsaturated fat which is the best kind for your heart.

Many studies have validated the use of olive oil, especially virgin ones. In one study, researchers confirmed that adults who consumed 25 ml or 2 tablespoons of virgin olive oil a day for one week showed less oxidation of LDL ("bad") cholesterol and higher levels of antioxidant compounds, particularly phenols, in their blood.

Different Oil For Different Purpose
For deep frying, saturated oil is best. Coconut and palm oil fall into this category.

Corn, safflower, sunflower, soybean, and peanut oil are high in poly-unsaturated fat with a higher omega-6 than omega-3. These should be used uncooked as a salad dressing.

For stir frying, use olive or canola oil.

Avoid trans-fat at all circumstances such as margarine and hydrogenated fat present in cookies and French fries. These are carcinogenic.

Now, using your freshest, organic ingredients, try this delicious recipe:

Sweet Potato Fries

INGREDIENTS
• 2 medium sweet potatoes
• 1 1/2 tablespoon oil ( coconut oil and-or canola oil)
Curry Style
• 1 teaspoon curry powder
• 1/4 teaspoon tumeric
• 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
Cajun Style
• 1 teaspoon dry mustard
• 1 teaspoon paprika
• 1/2 teaspoon thyme
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon tabasco sauce ( LITTLE OR A LOT)

METHOD
Preheat oven to 205C/400F. Scrub the potatoes and cut 1/4 to 1/2 inch / 6-1.3 centimeter thick sticks. In a cup, mix all spices (curry or cajun) and the oil together. Put the potatoes in a bowl, and throw the oil stuff on them. Toss to coat, then arrange the sticks on a baking sheet. Bake for 35-40 minutes.

Yummy!

NEW COMPILATION CD FEATURES 'THE BEST OF' LUCKY DUBE'S MUSIC
Music fans who mourned the death of reggae icon Lucky Dube in October last year should be pleased to hear his record company has released a compilation of his greatest hits. The 17-track CD is titled Lucky Dube – The Best Of. It features all the hits that made the South African musician a household name across the continent, and abroad. From Harare, reporter Derek Moyo has more.

The CD was compiled by Dave Segal, Lucky Dube's sound engineer from the moment he launched his career until his death.

Dube launched his career by singing traditional Zulu music, called mbaqanga. He recorded his first album with the Super Soul band in 1982. He then swapped genres and seemed to find his own voice in reggae, producing "Rastas Never Die". The song ended up being banned by the former apartheid government of South Africa.

Dube was one of a handful of performers and artists who openly called for the end of the whites-only regime. His 1989 hit "Together As One" asked why racial segregation remained if so many hated it. He sang that while cats and dogs seemed to be able to forgive one another, people - who claim to be the most advanced of species - seemed unable to do so.

For decades Dube continued to sing about injustice. After the birth of a democratic South Africa in 1994, he sang about corruption and the tax collector, who seemed to take a large slice of hard working people's income.

In the song "The way it is" Dube pleads with politicians to remain "good to people" on their way up the ladder of power, as they'll meet many on their way down.

The compilation CD contains sleeve notes listing "fun facts" about Dube's life. It states the vegetarian star never drank nor smoked cigarettes or marijuana - despite the reputation of many Rastafarians.

Dube was also the only South African artist to have a contract with the legendary US company Motown Records.

The reggae icon recorded 22 albums in his lifetime; he also won 20 local and international awards.

Dube fans eager for more information should visit his website www.luckydubemusic.com

Khari Kill : : Picture of Selassie
Delivering the message of righteousness, Khari Kill also known as the voice of D.Ghetto has restored New York as a powerhouse in conscious Reggae music with the release of his first album Picture of Selassie on record label Outta D. Ghetto, Inc. in stores Tuesday, September 25th which will be distributed globally and digitally by Raptivism Records/EMI.

Khari Kill bases his name and lyrics on trying to end oppression, injustice, racism, poverty and evil principalities in both high and low places. Born in the ghetto of La Horqutta in Trinidad, at a young age he discovered his gift of song writing and love for Reggae music.

When asked what he hopes to accomplish with this album Khari said, “I hope the world gets to know the name Khari Kill and what I represent. But what I most of all is for the people of the world to take the words of these songs and instill the inspiring lyrics into their daily lives.”

Picture of Selassie features two well-known hits, “Mary Grandson” and "Picture of Selassie" This album also features one of the industries most rated producers, Bobby Konders of Massive B and Trinidad’s powerhouse producers, Studio 53 to make it truly an eclectic album. According to BBC 1 Radio in England, " Khari Kill is Reggae’s new star!"

Bushman : : Get It In Your Mind
Bushman – one of Jamaica’s most popular roots reggae singers has released his first independent CD. Get It In Your Mind, a 15 song disc on his own Burning Bushes label, is being exclusively distributed by CDBaby.com and iTunes. It includes a special DVD enhancement that features a video for the song called “Gun Ting”.

Get it In Your Mind is not a typical reggae album. There is something for everyone to enjoy on this compilation! A little dancehall, some roots, lovers rock and even an acoustic, saxophone laced, ballad. It contains songs that were produced by several producers in many different studios throughout the island of Jamaica and some were even recorded in Bushman’s home studio – the Green House Studio in St. Thomas, Jamaica.

The title track for “Get It In Your Mind” was produced by the renowned hit maker, Donovan Germaine of Penthouse Studios. Dancehall tune “Born Fi Di Ting” was created with the help of Stephen McGregor and Michael Williams.

The sultry and smooth, “Scent of a Man” was written and produced by Stephen “Gibbo” Gibbs – he’s the son of Jamaica’s legendary producer, Joe Gibbs. Click below for a sound sample of this wicked tune.

SOL HORIZON:
REGGAE MANIFESTORS OF HIGH VIBRATIONS

Sol Horizon, Sonoma County’s Reggae Manifestors of High Vibrations, has grown and evolved into one of Northern California’s most popular Reggae bands and a most powerful voice for conscious community activism and a sustainable and renewable present. Founded in 2000 by lead singer/lyricist Michael Litwin, Sol Horizon blends high consciousness lyrics and ideals with rocking rhythms, inspired musicianship and infectious energy.

Their 2004 release--titled "First Light"--was very well received in Northern California, featured North Bay hits "Live And Learn" and "Music" and established Sol Horizon as one of the steadiest and strongest draws in Northern California's fertile Reggae Music scene. Their highly anticipated next release is titled "Party Revolution" and is scheduled for release later in 2008. Party Revolution will feature British Reggae Superstar Pato Banton as a special guest.

Sol Horizon draws inspiration for their high vibration music and lyrics from their work in their everyday lives. Each member is involved with Organic Farming, Intentional Community, Permaculture, Yoga, Computer Programming, Systems Thinking, inventing new technology and/or other forms of high frequency and innovative self-exploration, self-expression, community activism and sharing.

Musically, Sol Horizon shines from top to bottom and back up again. The rhythm section--drummer/percussionist Peter Van Gorder, bassist Colin Menzies and guitarist Alexei Brown--lay the foundation with the sweet and solid grooves. Keyboardist Jeremy Cooper blends his technical expertise with the intuitive imaginings of lead guitarist Clayton Hunt as they engage in charming musical conversations and as Jeremy punctuates and supports Hunt's mind-bending guitar solos. Lead singer Litwin keeps the energy moving with his stage presence and antics as the lyrics and melody float and bounce through the rhythms.

Sol has recently added the beautiful Gina Marie as a backing vocalist. Her powerful voice adds another element to Sol Horizon’s potent sound and allows Michael Litwin’s lead vocals to be solidly and harmonically backed by Gina and guitarist Alexei Brown.

Sol Horizon has toured California and Hawaii as the backing band for Pato Banton. They have performed at SolFest in Hopland, California, Whole Earth Festival in Davis, California, EarthDance in Laytonville, California, and they have headlined at the legendary Inn Of The Beginning in Cotati, California. They perform every year at The Harmony Festival in Santa Rosa, California, and they regularly pack the house at The Last Day Saloon in Santa Rosa. They have opened for Eek-A-Mouse, The Skatalites, Lost At Last and The JGB Band.

Sol Horizon delivers the goods with sweet grooves, high vibration lyrics and irresistibly danceable beats. Their energy will draw you in and give you the chance to see and feel the light in your soul and to be the truth behind your own eyes.

THIS WEEK, OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH THE PEOPLE SUFFERING IN YANGON, MYANMAR
This week, our thoughts and prayers are with the people suffering in Yangon, Myanmar (formerly Burma) because of the merciless Cyclone Nargris. Massive aid efforts are being made globally despite the government’s isolationism. Over 22,000 people may be dead and many more are displaced and missing. You may remember Myanmar from last year’s Buddhist monks protest leading to global attention.

In the weeks to come, I plan on writing about the subject of eschatology and welcome your comments and views.

Peace and Love,
