Cancer: Number One Killer of Cats and Dogs

One definition of cancer:
** A malignant growth of tissue tending to spread and associated with general ill health and progressive emaciation.

Pet cancer statistics:
**Cancer is the number one killer of cats and dogs: 47%, according to the Morris Animal Foundation.

**The most common cancers in dogs:
Skin tumors, breast cancers, lymphomas and cancer of the mouth and nose. Most common in 32 breeds up from only 21 breeds in 2002.

**The leading non-accidental cause of death in cats is cancer, at 32%.
The most common are mammary tumors, fibrosarcomas, mast cell tumors, and lymphosarcomas.

**Certain breeds of dogs are genetically prone to cancer:
Golden Retrievers
Labrador Retrievers
Rottweilers
Bernese Mountain Dogs
Boxers
I suggest being more aggressive with prevention for these breeds, i.e. with super nutritional support. (Green Power every day!)

Many believe cancer is far more prevalent today and becoming an increasing concern for all breeds. There is evidence however indicating that it is not a "disease of modern civilization." Bone cancer has been detected in a dinosaur bone discovered in Wyoming in 1992. There is evidence of cancer in wild animals...from Asian mice, to pelicans, to hawks. Some animals such as wild chimpanzees are believed to ingest Vernonia cinera for its anti-tumour capabilities. Many feel cancer in domesticated small animals is epidemic and are valuable to use for "watch waiting" or even for primary or supportive treatments. There can be no doubt that animals and humans have sought ways to treat cancer throughout history with herbal medicines.

Herbal medicine and supplements can be integrated into conventional cancer care; and, for those unable or unwilling to use radiation, chemotherapy or surgery, herbal medicines offer a valid supportive therapy.

65% of pet owners are using CAM & herbs, yet many don

IN HUMANS...Sixty-two percent of the U.S population surveyed said they use some form of complementary or alternative medicine. Most said they do not tell their doctors about it. This is a critical issue because many of the supplements people use can interact or interfere with some medications prescribed by human and animal doctors.

IN PETS...A 2006 study by the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences shows the same trend among pet owners. More than half of the pet owners surveyed said they use complementary medicine to help their cats and dogs.

A survey of 254 people whose pets were being treated at the University's Animal Cancer Center showed that 65 percent were using therapies such as herbs, nutritional supplements, chiropractic care and acupuncture.

Disturbingly many of those people said they don't tell their vets they are receiving these treatments, nor do they seek input on the treatments from a vet.

Quoted recently in Boston Globe article "Veterinarian Charles De Vinne estimates that 10 years ago in his practice, about 75 percent of owners whose dogs or cats were diagnosed with cancer would seek treatment of some kind -- surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or alternative medicine -- rather than letting the disease run its course. Nowadays, he says, ''the percentage is closer to 90."

"For pet owners who decide not to pursue aggressive measures like chemotherapy, whether for financial or other reasons, quality of life can still be a primary concern. With the right program -- painkillers and the like --the quality of life for a dying animal can ''skyrocket," says De Vinne.

Their is major growth in the use of Herbal Medicine by the General Public, and many people are using supplements on their pets. Pet owners are seeking their own alternatives to chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, including herbal cancer alternatives for a variety of reasons, cost savings and philosophy are the top two. Many are choosing herbal medicines alone, while others use herbal medicine and conventional treatment together. (In human mortality outcomes tracked in China, the best outcomes were those that were treated with both.)

Below I cover some of the most respected alternative approaches and formulas.

Hoxsey Formula

Harry Hoxsey's cancer formula (according to James Duke, Ph.D.).
This formula has some impressive chemical compounds of considerable interest to the National Cancer Institute. “Eight of the herbs in the internal tonic showed anti-tumor activity in controlled laboratory tests. Five showed antioxidant properties as protectants against cancer. All showed antimicrobial properties with activity against viral or bacterial infections.

The Hoxsey formula is an ideal application to try to shift an animal's constitutional tendency away from supporting the growth of these wayward cancer cells, whilst increasing and building the immune response, and stimulating the release of accumulated toxins.

Antecedent: Harry Hoxsey's Classic Formula.

Ingredients: Oregon grape root, burdock root, red clover flower, alfalfa leaf, prickly ash bark, stillingia root, cascara sagrada bark, poke root, licorice root.

Power Mushroom Formula

There are more than 10,000 independent research papers available on polysaccharide immune modulators and their use in cancer treatment. These are research papers from the National Institute of Health, Harvard, Japanese Cancer Society and all of the other major, mainstream research organizations. When someone asks, "Why arena't these methods being more widely used in cancer treatment?" - we can only point out that these are naturally occurring compounds and therefore difficult to patent.

In China, cancer research and treatment are showing these immunomodulator compounds can help counteract the toxic effects of chemotherapy and radiation while increasing outcomes against control groups not using herbs. Reishi nourishes the immune system, boosting the life span of white blood cells; its polysaccharides are anti-tumor, anti-viral and boost T-cell function. Astragalus Ligustrum Formula

In China, Ligustrum is often combined with Astragalus to not only augment chemotherapy and radiation, but to boost the immune system for chronic illness. Studies in cell cultures and laboratory animals have demonstrated these herbs combine synergistically to increase immunity. Astragalus' polysaccharides, Eleuthero's eleuthero-sides, and Schisandra's ligans have demonstrated their immune and energy building qualities.  

Antecedent: Developed recently in China from Fu Zheng therapy research.
 
Ingredients: Astragalus root, ligustrum root, schisandra berry, eleuthero root (Siberian ginseng), codonopsis root, white atractylodes root, poria sclerotium, tangerine peel, licorice root, stevia leaf.

Greens provide the nourishment that most modern companion animals lack in their commercially-processed diets. Dogs eating grass or cats eating houseplants may well be desperate attempts to seek out green nutrition. Chlorophyll (the green in greens) is the molecule that absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to synthesize carbohydrates from CO2 and water (photosynthesis).
