REGGAE REGGAE COOK BOOK LAUNCHED
LONDON - Jamaican chef, musician and entrepreneur, Levi Roots, officially released his new Reggae Reggae Cook Book at a launch party held at the Jamaican High Commission on June 5.

Levi Roots, who originally hails from the parish of Clarendon and who came to Britain to join his mother at the age of 12, gained widespread fame from his successful appearance on the BBC television program, 'The Dragon's Den,' in which small business owners pitch their ideas and seek financial backing for their projects from a panel of prominent businessmen.

He was one of the first success stories from that program, with two of the panel members opting to invest in his Reggae Reggae Sauce. He garnered far more attention than most of the other hopefuls to appear on the programme because of his flamboyant personality and his idea of presenting his pitch in the form of a song.

Levi has gone on to become a celebrity in Britain, making numerous TV appearances and even recording an extended version of his Reggae Reggae Sauce song to raise money for the Comic Relief charity.

The product has become a great success, selling far above the original estimates, and according to Levi, even outselling tomato ketchup in certain months.

The cook book, which is published by Harper Collins, contains Levi's recipes for traditional Jamaican dishes as well as his original creations.

It also contains some autobiographical material, with Levi talking about his childhood living with his grandmother in Jamaica and his move to join his mother and siblings in England, his troubles growing up and his eventual transformation to award-winning musician, chef, entrepreneur and now, author.

Peter Jones, the British businessman who chose to back Reggae Reggae Sauce, and who has become Levi's mentor and friend, introduced him at the book launch, making special mention of how dedicated and hardworking he is and how much of his time he still manages to devote to others.

Levi cited Mr. Jones, after his mother and grandmother, as one of his biggest influences and said that he hopes that his own trails and eventual triumph would prove to be an inspiration to others. He ended by leading the guests in a spirited sing-along of the Reggae Reggae Sauce Song.

Governor-General, Professor Sir Kenneth Hall, Lady Rheima Hall and Jamaican High Commissioner, Burchell Whiteman were also in attendance at the launch.

CARIFEST C.A.R.E.S. BUT EEK-A-MOUSE DOESNT
 by Brittany Somerset

June 11-08 - When asked at last week’s Carifest C.A.R.E.S. (Compassionate Artists Recognizing Entertainment Solutions) press conference what Carifest meant to him, Eek-A-Mouse replied. “It doesn’t mean (expletive) to me.” He then changed the subject entirely and went off on a tirade, dissing all the “white people who control reggae, like Ace Of Base, Matisyahu, (whose name he repeatedly mispronounced and called Matissaweh), Sean Paul and Shaggy; bitterly blaming them for his inability to get signed by a major label. He even included the late, great, reggae founder Bob Marley in his racist rant, citing that he had a white father.

“They nah wah no black people to run reggae music. They wah Sean Paul and Shaggy; A true. Matissaweh jump inna di business and starts sellin all the records, and now mi kaw sell none, and mi kaw sign me, so mi wonder wahg'wan. Bloodclot. All dem white boys get money from reggaemusic and me kaw get none. Toots and The Maytals, Dennis Brown get nuttin and here comes Massassahoo, here comes UB40…” he repeated himself, getting visibly more amplified by the second, as shown in this video of spiteful speech:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gz2-SHGlYs

Music transcends race, if Eek-A-Mouse can’t get signed or earn money, perhaps its his attitude, not his skin color, that’s holding him back.

Team Legendary Promoter, Alfonso D'Niscio Brooks told Eek-A-Mouse's management and agent that, “Unless he issues a public apology to Carifest, it's affiliates and it’s supporters, his performing at Carifest will not be allowed and I will expect a complete refund.” Mr. Brooks further emphatically stated, “I can't condone or promote his negative behavior. Carifest C.A.R.E.S is about Love. Racism and/or prejudices will in no way be accepted. Carifest has a very diverse audience and will not alienate anyone. I mean it when I say we will represent only good vibes! Carifest is not the platform for negativity.”
Stay tuned to find out if Eek-A-Mouse recants his racist remarks or if the show will go on with out him.

Phillip Fraser : : 'Dancing Time'
Release Date 9/15/2007

The 70s and early 80s were a time of incredible productivity for reggae artists and producers. Ska and Rock Steady had given way to the new reggae beat and there was a sound system on every corner. Djs and soundsmen scoured the islands and the USA for new music to play on massive PA systems. Version after version of popular beats were released to an audience that had an insatiable appetite for the latest cut and dub of the hottest riddim.

Singers and toasters would go from one studio to the next to check out what the musicians and producers were working on. If they liked what they heard and had a song that fit the beat it would be laid down on tape. Session after session would go like this and the top songs of the day would be sent to press. Many a good song was put on the shelf and forgotten as the next wave of beats came and the dancehall crowd moved on.

It was in this time that Jah Thomas and Phillip Fraser came together. Thomas was enjoying a demand for his beats with hits like “Entertainment” and “Gunshot” being two of his most heavily sampled. Fraser hailed from Greenwich Farm and moved with men like Prince Allah, Rod Taylor, Micheal Prophet, and producers Danny Mais and Bertram Brown while Thomas was more likely to be found in Waltham Park hanging with Junjo Lawes, Ranking Toyan, Little John, Barrington Levy, and singer/producer Linval Thompson.

This then is a collection of songs recorded in those times and except for “Dancing Time” that appears on ‘Roots Dancehall Party’ these tracks have not been released before.

Jah Thomas is still producing his own music and is often called upon by modern artists to help with the vibes of a song or session.
Phillip Fraser is still performing on the reggae festival circuit and is equally at home singing songs of the heart or socially conscious roots music.

A man of peace and humility, a true and original Rasta in every sense of the word. If you see a flyer advertising a dance, and his name is on it, then do yourself a favor.
Check it out!

ON THIS DAY IN REGGAE - JUNE 13, 2008
January 13
1945: (some say 1943 or 1954): Boris Gardiner is born in Kingston, Jamaica.
1945: Karl Anthony, radio DJ and MC, is born.
1961: Graham "Suggs" McPherson [Madness] is born in Hastings, E. Sussex.
1972: Singer Sharona White is born in Birmingham, England.
1993: A strong earthquake (mag. 5.1) strikes Kingston.
It occurred at 12:11 p.m. Two lives ware lost from shock and falling rocks. There was a man who prophesied that earthquake. A prophet of Nyabinghi (Rastafarian) who had been arrested for swindle implored the court "Please hurry up judgement. Earthquake will soon come," but they laughed off it. 15 minutes after that, the court was thrown into a panic.

Jamallad :
Lucien Kouassi was born in the Ivory Coast, West Africa, where he was taught the guitar and sight reading by American folk singer, Lisa Sammet, then Peace Corps volunteer in his country.

This set him on a musical journey that began in West Africa, trailed across Europe, and finally the USA, where he  acquired a degree in Music and Business at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

In his formative years Lucien studied Classical Guitar and Folk, to later cross over to Pop, Rock, Reggae. However, the west African Music Cavasha, which is the precedent to Soukous and Makossa is the undertone of Lucien’s music.

At the end of the College years Lucien became known as JAMALLAD and has since been writing and performing music that explores the human condition in a distinctive style that is his own. The repertoire reflects the global culture that Jamallad has so fortunately enjoyed. He sings in various languages.

Backed by four other musicians he packed clubs form Eastern Pennsylvania to the Jersey shore ( Long Beach Island), Through Delaware, Ocean City Maryland, Virginia Beach, and every coastal state southward to the Florida Keys ( Key West) for Spring breaks for several years before relocating to Los Angeles.

Now in Hawaii, Jamallad has teamed up with partner Chetanaa Petra Zoeller to co-write and produce a world class album titled Global Citizen which is about to come out.  A must-hear album.

Lucien has always understood himself as a messenger, and uses his music as a vehicle.

Jamallad’s Music is conscious music

His music brings important messages across in a fun, upbeat way. His talent and inspiration allow him to communicate to a broad audience, in various musical styles; i.e. World, Reggae, Rock, Pop, Afro Pop, and Folk.
The topics range from world peace, environmental issues, to relations( from personal to global). Some songs are just plain fun dance songs.
