THIEVERY CORPORATION NEW RELEASE ON 9.23.08

Dynamic D.C. based duo Thievery Corporation, AKA Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, are all set to drop their latest album Radio Retaliation on September 23rd on Eighteenth Street Lounge Music.

In reference to his collective nom de plume, Thievery Corporation’s Rob Garza says “Our deepest source of inspiration comes from our record collections.” Garza, along with Eric Hilton, make up the dynamic duo, Thievery Corporation. Always great admirers and curators of dusty grooves and vintage vinyl, Thievery Corporation borrow from the classically sensual and blunted sounds of their favorite Jamaican dub, reggae, rocksteady, Brazilian bossa nova, vintage film soundtracks, and psychedelic rock, to forge new sophisticated sonic territory.

Recording at the Consulate studios in Washington D.C., Thievery Corporation have managed to blossom in the heart of the Empire, a city the duo often refer to as “the real Babylon.” The group is a major presence in a scene legendary for fierce independence, musically and politically. Formed in the summer of 1995 at D.C.’s Eighteenth Street Lounge – the now world-renowned venue that is still a creative incubator for DC underground music - Rob Garza and Lounge co-owner Eric Hilton bonded over strong drinks, reggae, rocksteady, lover’s rock, dub, bossa nova and jazz records, then decided to see what would come of mixing all these together in a recording studio.

The duo caught the ears of underground DJs with their first two 12” vinyl EPs, “Shaolin Satellite” and “2001: A Spliff Odyssey.” With their 1997 debut LP, “Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi,” they had already begun to define a new genre of electronic music and connect with an international community of chillaxed contemporaries. Though the terminology has varied (trip hop, downtempo, chill out, atmospheric drum and bass, space age bachelor pad music, and myriad other permutations), they have been at the top of their game since the release of their first single.

Rastafarian sibling singers, Zebo and Roots, received their first major buss, performing live vocals with Thievery Corporation, and later joined their troupe full-time. Thievery kicked it up a notch, when singer Notch recorded with them.

After the warm, minimalistic, yet multi-layered, Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi, Garza and Hilton raised the production value significantly with the highly acclaimed, “The Mirror Conspiracy,” which contained the seminal international hit “Lebanese Blonde.”
The next Thievery offerings were the conscious and thought-provoking, “The Richest Man In Babylon,” followed by  the dub remix album “Babylon Revisited,” “The Cosmic Game,” “Abductions and Reconstructions,” and “Versions.” The title, “Versions” gives a nod to the Jamaican production tradition of creating “versions” of the original tracks. Their newest album, tentatively titled, “Radio Retaliation” will be out on September 23rd,  of 2008.

DEUTSCH-DENIED: JAH JAH YUTE UNABLE TO PERFORM IN GERMANY

Reggae Artist Jah Jah Yute (http://www.jahjahyute.com) was to perform in Frankfurt and Mainz, Germany this past weekend for Domancran Promotions.
Jah Jah Yute flew on Continental Airlines from Liberty Airport, in Newark, New Jersey to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam Holland. Jah Jah Yute was stopped by immigrations while checking in to board the connecting flight to Frankfurt, Germany. Immigrations said that citizens of Jamaica need a Schengen Visa to be allowed access into European countries. Immigrations then excorted Jah Jah Yute to their office for an interview and to make arrangements for him to return to the United States, where he resides, to get a Schengen Visa. Immigrations also fined Continental Airlines $40,000 for their bungle of allowing their customer to travel to a country where he would not be allowed access without all of the proper documents and they stated that Continental Airlines should compensate the customer.
If you are a Jamaician citizen leaving for any European country make sure you have the Schengen Visa and all other proper documentation.
The customer sevice person at Liberty Airport thought that Jah Jah Yute’s Permanent Resident Card and Passport would be sufficient for the immigrations requirements.
Jah Jah Yute was very disappointed that he was not able to be there for his fans, but Domancran will reschedule a new tour for Jah Jah Yute in the near future.

MVD ANNOUNCES NEW SKATALITES DVD
The World's most influential reggae group, The Skatalites have been
producing music of the finest caliber for over forty years, either as a
group or individually as players on countless reggae classics. The two
performances making up this DVD, filmed at the Lokersee Festival in Belgium
in 1997 and 2002, are clear evidence of their brilliance. Formed in Jamaica
in 1964 by several of the island's finest session musicians, The Skatalites'
unique fusion of boogie-woogie, R&B, Jazz, mento, calypso and African
rhythms introduced the World to ska, which in turn evolved into today's
modern reggae sound. The original group broke up in 1965 after a short
eighteen months of existence, leaving its members to pursue solo careers for
a number of years. Their recording of 'Guns Of Navarone' even made the U.K.
singles charts in 1967, becoming one of the first-ever ska hits. The group
reformed for the first time in 1975 and several times again in the years
since, playing concerts throughout the World and recording a series of
critically-acclaimed albums - they were Grammy Award-nominated in both 1996
and 1997 for best reggae album. Not surprising for a group of its size and
longevity, The Skatalites has seen a number of personnel changes over the
years, yet has always maintained its superb level of musicianship and has
prided itself in carrying on the innovative spirit of the original group.

Bonus Materials:

On Tour With The Skatalites: In this documentary film we see the group
rehearsing, warming up and playing on stage. We meet several of the members
of the band, both old and new, who talk about themselves, how they joined
the band, their music and The Skat
History: A year-by-year run-down of the group's achievements since it was
first formed.

NATIVE ELEMENTS PERFORM IN BELMONT, CA

Roots Foundation : : Conscious Revolution
Roots Foundation have been lighting up stages in southern California since 1996, with their unique style of reggae, reggae rock, and world music-as headliners, and as the exclusively selected opening act for Bunny Wailer, the Melodians, Wailing Souls, Abyssinians, and others.

Bandleader/songwriter/guitarist Kurt Mahoney has been involved in the reggae scene since 1982, working with Joe Higgs, Ras Michael, Fully Fullwood and more, on stage and in the studio.

Roots Foundation incorporate influences ranging from classic reggae artists of the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, to artists as diverse as King Sunny Ade’, The Grateful Dead, Beatles, and Dylan-combining deep grooves, strong melodies, meaningful lyrics, striking harmonies, soulful sax, and Kurt’s signature steel guitar into a sound unmistakably and uniquely their own.

With the eleven song tour de force Conscious Revolution (featuring Ras Michael and Santa Davis); Roots Foundation adds a new classic to reggae’s ever-expanding universe!

From the uplifting (Trace Of Sadness, Sacred Ground, Let It Grow), to the social/political (Turn Away, Hemp Nation, Conscious Revolution), and the universal (Teach Us How To Love, All Around The World), to the epic (Never Get Away), Conscious Revolution is a journey worth repeating again and again!

SCORCHA : : STRAIGHT JA
This song is about the ways...thoughts...life style of the Rasta man. The words to this song explain that you should walk through life sturdy in your beliefs...with faith in JAH...and love in your heart. You should discriminate against no one...treat all mankind with love and understanding. If you walk in goodness...in the way of the Rasta, the evil in the world will look pon you...and feel threatened by you.

SCORCHA (Robert Williams) was raised in the small farming community in the hills outside of Kingston, Jamaica. His love of music and his deep voice led him to follow the call of performing as a DJ artist from an early age. Writing and performing his own tunes he quickly became a local favorite. He migrated to the states as a teenager to continue his writing/ performing career as a DJ artist in the DC area. After many years of performing throughout the States he returned to his roots in Jamaica. Now, a well-seasoned artist, he resides in his rural Jamaican blue mountain community birthplace and continues to delight both young and old with his high energy talent and emotionally deep routed lyrics. His tunes can be heard internationally on stations all over the world including the BBC with major support coming from both pirate and internet radio stations. SCORCHA has recently completed a track "COMPLAIN" for German artist FENIN soon to be released on the Shitkatapult indie label. Two more featured artist tracks by SCORCHA will soon be released on JUNIOR SPEARS upcoming album on the Strife indie record label.

Released earlier this year, No Stress Express (Half Pint Music/Essential/Universal), is deemed to be a classic and is available now at all leading music retailers.  The hot tracks include “Unity” featuring Jack Maness from Long Beach Dub All Stars / Sublime, “Bad Boys” featuring Sizzla, “Just be Good” featuring R&B songbird Mikki Howard, ‘Mind Over Matter,” ”Suzie,” and "Children of His Majesty.”

Half Pint has enjoyed a long history of success dating back to the early 1980's. He was the first major artist produced by Prince Jammy (later King Jammy), and together they helped establish a lighter, more relaxed, more melodic approach to dancehall that made for an easy transition into the digital ragga era. His first big hit "Winsome" was later covered by the Rolling Stones in 1986 (under the new title "Too Rude"). Many hits followed: "Money Man Skank," "One in a Million," "One Big Family," "Pouchie Lou," the socially conscious "Mr. Landlord," and the all-time dancehall classic "Level the Vibes." The huge hit "Substitute Lover" came in 1992, and in 1996 the rock group Sublime covered another Half Pint classic, "Loving."

British female pop/R&B star. Estelle, has recorded a new hit cover of Pint's "Substitute Lover" on her new sophomore CD release, Shine, released on John Legend's Home School label distributed by Atlantic Records.  Look for a remix with Estelle featuring Half Pint for the cover version to be released soon.

Invocation to the Dawn

Look to this day, for it is Life, the very life of Life;
In its brief course lie all the verities and realities of your existence...
the bliss of Growth, the glory of Action, the splendour of Beauty.

For Yesterday is but a dream,
and Tomorrow only a vision;
But Today well lived makes Yesterday a dream of Happiness
and Tomorrow a vision of Hope.
