HENRY JR. REPORTS FROM BATON ROUGE
|
Greetings! from Hit City records - this is Henry Turner jr reporting from Baton Rouge the city took a bad hit. I have heard from most of my band members and a hand full of other musicians have no power still. I am thirty minutes east of Baton Rouge at Arby's; the first place that would let me use wi-fi. Most places are on cable and have no Internet.
Everyone I know needs gas ,ice, lamp oil etc. and cannot keep food for long so, no need to stock food, just get it every day. My friends from around the country and abroad is money graming and western unioning cash to my musicians and me so we are able to move around. Gas cards can work, also those who have generators have offered to let people come to their homes if they will share fuel cost. From what i understand we will be without power for 8 days or so. This time the governments local and state was well prepared and things seemed organized. Thanks to all of my supporters and friends for offers of support. and to those of you who are worried about our damages we are not concerned as of now except for immediate shelter which most of us have we will deal with the damages later. will e-mail again when i get access again. if you are planning to mail us cash for support send it to PO Box 64895 Baton Rouge La.70896 Make all checks and money orders payable to Hit city records. if you wire transfer money make it payable to Henry Turner jr and e-mail us and let us know the amounts and when so we can pick it up. as of now we are fund raising for about 20 musicians and will try to support more as we get cash in.

PEACE, LOVE, RESPECT! BOB MARLEY
|
A statue of the late reggae legend Robert Nesta Marley better known as Bob Marley has been erected in the small Serbian town of Banatski Sokolac. It is intended to promote peace and tolerance and carries the inscription “Bob Marley — fighter for freedom armed with a guitar.” Organisers claim that the Marley statue, which was created by Croatian artist Davor Dukic, is the first monument in Europe to the Jamaican-born star.

SPRAGGA BENZ SON ALLEGEDLY MURDERED BY POLICE
|
(Brittany Somerset, Intrepid Reporter)
The teenage son of the legendary singer Spragga Benz, 17-year old Carlton Grant Jr., was murdered in Kingston on August 23rd. He was shot, by police. There are conflicting opinions as to whether or not he was armed at the time of the shooting. All reports claim that he was shot once, while his hands were in the air, after he had surrendered to police. Allegedly he was shot a second time, execution style, after he was already down on the ground.
Police claim the teen was carrying a pistol, and they had to give chase. Upset residents refute that claim. Whether or not he was carrying a weapon, or initially ran away from the police, once he surrendered, (stopped running, wasn't firing) he should not have been killed in their custody.
Spragga Benz, whose real name is Carlton Grant Sr., partnered with soca starKevin Lyttle with thedancehall remix of Lyttle's track, 'Turn Me On'. Turn Me On reached #1 on the Billboard Single Chart on August 12th, 2004.
Spragga Benz was in New York at the time of his son was murdered, while his son's mother was with him in the hospital. He was driven to the hospital by police, and pronounced dead on arrival.

AVA LEIGH FINDS HER VIBE IN REGGAE
|
article by: By ADRIAN THRILLS dailymail.co.uk
Who is she? A self-styled 'hippy chick' from Chester with an unlikely fondness for vintage reggae. Why the fuss? What Duffy did for classic U.S. soul, Ava is doing for the rootsy rhythms of Jamaica. What does she sound like? Ava, 22, brings a breezy pop feel to a style made famous long before she was born. Her backing tracks are surprisingly authentic, harking back to the late Seventies' golden age of singers such as Dennis Brown and Burning Spear, but the vocals are unmistakably fresh and British. What's the story? Ava's mum, who works for the Royal Mail, was a huge reggae fan and Ava recalls singing along to Matumbi's After Tonight and Janet Kay's Silly Games when the pair were doing the housework together in Chester. The singer toured with her school jazz band, but also practised in a local rehearsal studio at weekends. She rejected a place at stage school to follow her pop dreams. And then? Ava recorded some R&B material, but didn't find her niche until she returned to reggae three years ago. A record deal with Virgin followed shortly afterwards. She says: 'You know when something feels right. I was so happy when I finally found my music. I write lyrics about my own experiences, and I love songs that everyone can relate to. I want to make memories.' What now? Now based in Brighton, Ava cut her debut album, Rollin', in Britain and Jamaica, working with reggae legends Sly & Robbie, duetting with Finley Quaye and co-writing with Gabrielle. Where can I hear more? A single, La, La, La, is out on September 29, with Rollin' following a week later on October 6. Ava is also playing at the Party On The Green in Paignton, Devon, on September 6

Cocoa Tea, the originator of the singjay style of the 1980s and 1990s, is in the spotlight again with two songs geared towards the United States presidential elections. Barack Obama has been bubbling for months on the radio and youtube, among reggae fans young and old as well as music fans in general and Yes We Can is the brand new non-partisan follow up.
"This is not about class nor color, race nor creed," Cocoa Tea sings on Barack Obama. "It's about the changes… Americans need." The song’s message has caught the attention of a generation of listeners as well as media outlets worldwide.

JAH ROOTS : : JOY
Jah Roots, “the best live American reggae band,” are playing several festivals this summer in support of their new release entitled JOY - currently CDbaby.com’s second highest selling album! In addition to exploring themes of love and longing, Jah Roots also has a message in many of their new songs, which, in the time-honored tradition of conscious roots-reggae, they are touring tirelessly to impart to the masses. Often their songs expound on themes as varied as the beauty of life or diverge into offering insightful commentary on the chaos unique to our times, and the universal insecurity we as a society endure because of it. Each member of JAH ROOTS takes the delivery of this conscious music very seriously as evidenced by the intensity they bring to each performance. During the recording of JOY, Jah Roots were joined by legendary Bob Marley & The Wailers guitarist, Junior Marvin! Their collaboration produced two instant reggae classics “Ganja Weed” and “Spliff and My Lady.” Due to their compelling music, this mid-western based group of musicians are rapidly becoming favorites of reggae fans the world over. Jah Roots are best experienced live! Go to www.JahRoots.com for a complete list of concert dates.

LJX : : Two Chord Skankin'
With his debut album, Two Chord Skankin’, Toronto-based reggae singer/guitarist LJX has dropped one of the most satisfying reggae discs of the year so far. Lyndon John X brings fresh energy to roots reggae; his sound strongly recalls Steel Pulse at their peak, with a jazzy flow to his vocals intertwined with his lead guitar lines. He’s an excellent songwriter; his words are well chosen to match his vocal style, and he paints vivid pictures of timeless reggae subject matter such as dancing, oppression and love. The Two-Chord Skankin’ album comes as advertised, and these bright sounds are perfect for reggae lovers everywhere! (c/o David Dacks, Editor of Xclaim Magazine, Toronto Ontario) ** Album was nominated for 2008 Juno Award for Best Reggae Recording and was also nominated for Top Male Newcomer at the Canadian Reggae Music Awards 2008
