CHEF MAYRA'S NATURAL SKIN CARE
Pomegranate
The hundreds of ruby-colored seeds inside pomegranates were once thought to symbolize fertility, and given the fruit's proven powers as a strong antioxidant, it has given birth to a huge number of products, including designer juice and high-end skin-care creams.
The pomegranate's power comes from ellagic acid, a type of polyphenol, which is an antioxidant found in red wine and green tea. Antioxidants seek out and neutralize cell-damaging free radicals that come from the environment (pollution, UV rays) and from the body's natural aging process. Ellagic acid has been shown in some studies to neutralize free radicals more effectively than the other polyphenols found in green tea and red wine. It's also more stable in skin-care products than some other antioxidants, like vitamin C, which can lose potency when exposed to light and air.

Grapefruit
Until the 19th century, grapefruit was grown purely as an ornamental fruit. Rarely eaten, it was known only for its looks - an interesting harbinger of its modern-day promise to improve ours.
A 2005 study by the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, in Chicago, showed that the scent of grapefruit on women made them seem an average of six years younger to men. Grapefruit's main use in skin care, however, is as a citric acid. Like any alpha hydroxy acid, citric acid loosens the bonds between skin cells, allowing dead ones to fall away, revealing smoother, more radiant skin.

Mushroom
No wonder the Super Mario Brothers got a jolt of evil-fighting power whenever they ate a mushroom. Mushrooms have long been used in Asian cultures as remedies for everything from low energy to cancer.
The extract of several Japanese mushrooms has been shown to reduce inflammation, which can affect collagen in the skin and contribute to changes associated with aging, such as the appearance of fine lines. Reducing that inflammation keeps skin cells vital and functioning and also suppresses irritation so that other active ingredients, like antioxidants, can do their jobs.
Shiitake mushrooms have multifaceted benefits for the skin. They contain antioxidants that block proteins known to cause cell breakdown; they provide chemical exfoliation; and they also contain kojic acid, which has a lightening effect on age spots and discoloration, making skin appear brighter over time.

Pumpkin
Despite its prevalence in favorite sweets, such as pies and muffins, pumpkin is quite acidic. And the enzymes in pumpkin act like salicylic acids, chemical exfoliants that encourage skin cells to turn over more rapidly.
Pumpkin is also a carotenoid, a derivative of vitamin A, which is indicated by its orange color, and that makes it an antioxidant in addition to having exfoliating properties.
Pumpkin seeds are a good source of zinc and have been used as a natural remedy for acne. Studies show that zinc has an effect similar to that of the common antibiotic tetracycline.

Bamboo
Bamboo is one hardy plant. Not only is it one of the fastest-growing plants on earth (some species grow more than three feet a day) but its strength and sustainability have also made it a favorite of architects looking for environmentally friendly building materials.
Although the Chinese have used bamboo for centuries (the hardened secretion from the stalks has been taken internally to treat asthma), its popularity is only now growing in the United States. Bamboo pulp is being woven into fabric that retains antibacterial qualities even after it is washed. And in skin care, finely milled bamboo powder is used as an exfoliant in cleansers and scrubs. The smooth bamboo particles are less harsh than the scraggly, uneven grains made from salt and nuts, making it safer and less irritating to sensitive skin.

A CALL FOR I-SISTENCE FOR CLAUDIUS LINTON
Fly Friends,
Anthony here. A hurricane has hit  the home of one of my favorite clients... Claudius Linton (Hoffner Bros.,  Kingman & Jonah) has lost his roof! A small campaign had been launched  to get the word out about his greatest hits and new cd (linked below, quite  a story)... but I'm now on a campaign to get him on his feet in Jamaica.

Looking forward to helping Claudius patch things up.
(And  get back to bringing us a fall tour with Ansel Collins and Isaac Haile  Selassie.)

Here's the link:
http://www.sunkingrecords.com/hurricane.html
NOTE  from Sun King Records: "Claudius' house got mashed up by the hurricane so  we've been doing some fundraising to help him get a new roof on before the  next hurricane comes through. Fans have been amazingly supportive and  generous. There's a donation page at http://www.sunkingrecords.com and  we've also discounted everything in the store 20% for a week or two to raise  funds. So if you don't mind spreading the word a bit, we'd be grateful for  any support."

DENNIS BOVELL WANTS TO SPREAD THE LOVE
Article by Paul Clarke

British reggae artists have always idolised Jamaica but, back in the 1970s, the respect was all one way. Or, as Dennis Bovell puts it: 'We were the little brother in the UK.' But that began to change in 1975 when Louisa Mark's Caught You In A Lie became a hit at reggae dances, followed by the start of Bovell and Dennis Harris's Lovers Rock label, which christened the fledgling genre.
'Prior to Caught You In A Lie, most sound systems were prejudiced against British reggae,' Bovell recalls. 'But I was straddling both camps as a sound-system operator and a recording artist, and I convinced other sound sytems that this was the way forward. After it became OK to play that one piece of British reggae, it opened the doors.'
Representing what Bovell calls 'the sentimental wing of reggae', lovers rock is distinguished by its soulful vocals, strong focus on love songs and the increased involvement of female artists. Many of lovers rock's most famous singers, such as Janet Kay, Carroll Thompson and Caron Wheeler, who would later sing with Soul II Soul, offered a feminine contrast to the male-dominated world of Jamaican roots reggae.
'It was a good switch to have the ladies leading the whole thing,' Bovell says, 'but it was also really important in showing Jamaica that we could cut it. The biggest compliment we were ever paid was when Jamaican artists such as Sugar Minott started trying to do lovers rock songs, which showed we'd really turned the tables.'
Kay, Thompson and Mark are all appearing at The Kings And Queens Of Lovers Rock show, a celebration of the scene that also features Bovell's own band, Matumbi. Often regarded as the seminal lovers rock band, Matumbi are back playing together for the first time in 20 years as a tribute to their late vocalist, Bevin Fagan. Not that Bovell has been idle in that time, producing dub albums such as Blackbeard, working with poet Linton Kwesi Johnson and teaming up with Mad Professor. He is also convinced that lovers rock is not just a relic of the 1970s and early 1980s.
'It did dwindle for a bit because reggae producers are always trying to find a new style,' he says. 'Dancehall is very now, but people are searching for something else and what goes around comes around. There's a whole new generation who need educating about this music. I think it will be rekindled.'

ANDREW DIAMOND : : DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH
Andrew Diamond's debut album, Diamond in the Rough, is available at CDbaby.com, iTunes and Ernie B's. The album mixes the sweetness of roots reggae with the toughness of machine driven dance hall. Andrew has included some of Jamaica's great artists on the album including members of the Roots Radics', Burning Spear's and Damian Marley's bands. Songs include: the single, "My Radio", "Run Around feat. Prezident Brown" and "Puss and Dog War feat. Queen Ifrica". Other tracks on the album include: Naturally, a slow and relentless groove featuring Dwight Pinckney and Flabba Holt of the Roots Radics band,Last Chance, with the Solid Foundation Band on the Real Rock Riddim. Andrew grew up surrounded by music in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, originally a drummer; he did a short tour with the Itals before starting the backing band Solid Foundation. Solid Foundation has since backed artists such as: Everton Blender, Richie Spice, Norris Man, Tony Rebel, Queen Ifirca, Foundation, the Ethiopians and Prezident Brown. Andrew moved to Kingston in 2004 where he lived and worked for two years before returning to the US to reside in Washington DC.

Destroy Babylon : : The Shadow Army
Destroy Babylon carries on the unlikely marriage of reggae and punk rock, influenced by bands like the Clash, Steel Pulse, Black Uhuru, and Bad Brains, but has a sound truly their own. Originally from the sticks of New Hampshire and based in the bricks of Boston, MA, Destroy Babylon fuses hard hitting roots reggae, drenched in delay and reverb, with the styles of the early post-punk era (Gang of Four, Minutemen). Politically conscious, DB takes aim at corrupt government, mercenaries, racism, and religious cults, among others, yet their dubbed-out, high-energy live shows are nothing but a punky reggae party. Their newest release, The Shadow Army, begins with their version of Keith Hudson's "Nuh Skin Up", leading into the title track which features NYC underground MC's Calamity and Too Deep (check out the free mp3). The album's array of styles and the band's constant touring has created a serious buzz in the North East and beyond... get ready for the destruction of Babylon! Check out DestroyBabylon.com for more.

Taj Weekes & Adowa : : DEIDEM
Hollow Display," deals with a personal issue, in this case the first-person account of a guy putting on a brave front after losing his girl... yet sung in the same tone as the others. Many cuts are deeply empathic, yet the lyrics offer a stark and sober view of the world almost to the point of resignation.
